Three hundred twenty-six participants in Brgy. Buhangin joined the forum on the Davao City Septage Management Program (SMP) for Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) spearheaded by the City Government of Davao and Davao City Water District on July 21, 2026. Also in attendance were barangay officials and staff, purok leaders, Barangay Nutrition Scholars, and residents.
The forum emphasized how BHWs can help raise awareness on the SMP and proper sanitation practices, encourage compliance with the Septage and Sewerage Management (SSM) Ordinance of Davao City, and promote preparedness for DCWDโs upcoming Sanitation Service through their direct interaction with communities at the grassroots level.
Emphasized during the forum was the environmental and public health importance of SMP. Said program is a joint initiative between the City Government of Davao and DCWD that aims to prevent water source contamination and reduce the risk of waterborne diseases such as typhoid, dysentery, gastroenteritis, poliovirus, hepatitis A, diarrhea, and cholera.
Also highlighted were the City's efforts to enforce the SSM Ordinance which includes ensuring compliance with the standard design for sanitary tanks, access of sanitary tanks during desludging, regular sanitary tank desludging, and proper disposal of collected septage.
To support this undertaking, DCWD presented its upcoming Sanitation Service which will provide affordable, reliable, convenient, and efficient septage desludging, transport, treatment, and disposal for households and establishments. The utility explained the sanitation chain from the collection and transport of septage using vacuum trucks equipped with spill control and disinfectant materials to the treatment of collected waste at the cityโs first government-owned and state-of-the-art Septage Treatment Plant before the proper disposal or reuse of treated effluent and biosolids.
As of this writing, the City Government of Davao and DCWD have already conducted forums for BHWs in six barangays and reached various sectors including barangay officials, educators, homeowners associations, civic organizations, business sector, and various government offices.
