Incentive Spirometers! 😮‍💨

– Used for –
Incentive spirometers promote deep breathing in hospitalized patients at risk for pneumonia! Recent surgery or a respiratory infection can lead to ATELECTASIS.

– What is atelectasis–
A condition where the alveoli collapse (think: gas exchange in the lungs!). Atelectasis can lead to pneumonia, delaying recovery for this patient and lengthening their stay.

– How do you use them? –
Instruct the patient to breathe out fully, then take a slow, deep breath IN (like sucking IN through a straw!), feel that expansion, and slowly release. Mark where the patient reaches– Remember: this is not about the HIGHEST LEVEL! It’s about control & expansion → use the colored markers on the device and try to maintain the disc between them!

– PRO TIP –
If a patient is watching TV, tell them to try this a few times every time a commercial comes on!

Now you know what this is when you see it sitting on your patients’ bedside tables.

– What is Pharmacokinetics –
The study of how drugs are moved throughout the body

To remember the order of Pharmacokinetics you can think
💡 ADd ME some medications 💡

A for absorption
D for distribution
M for metabolism
E for excretion

– Absorption –
How the Medication goes from administration → bloodstream

– Distribution –
Transportation of the medication by bodily fluids taking it where it needs to go

– Metabolism –
How the medication is broken down or metabolized.
Most common site: LIVER

**FIRST PASS EFFECT**
This is when you can take an oral medication and it gets metabolized by the liver or gut BEFORE it reaches the bloodstream. This means you won’t get the desired effects because the level of the medication is LOW OR NONEXISTENT in the bloodstream. That’s why IM, IV, & SubQ may be better because they BYPASS the liver & gut!

– Excretion –
How is the medication going to be eliminated from the body?
Most common site: KIDNEYS

The body is SO complex! Each organ system plays a unique role in maintaining homeostasis in the body!

– Nervous system –
Controls motor, sensory, autonomic, cognitive, and behavioral activities. (broken into the central nervous system & the peripheral nervous system)

– Respiratory system –
Supplies blood with oxygen & eliminates (exhales) gaseous wastes from the body (carbon dioxide)

– Cardiovascular system –
The heart's main function is to pump oxygen-rich blood to the organs & tissues

– Endocrine system –
Made up of glands & organs that release hormones (chemical messengers) which carry information & instructions from one cell to another.

– Musculoskeletal system –
Supports and protects the body & vital organs, assists with the movement of the extremities, holds important minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, fluoride, and magnesium
