Omandam, Lim blaze to victory in Damosa Land 5150 debut

SAMAL ISLAND – Eryk Omandam and Natasha Doromal-Lim stamped their class in style, powering their way to victory in the inaugural Damosa Land 5150 Triathlon, securing the men’s and women’s overall crowns against a strong international field on Sunday.

The duo conquered the challenging Olympic-distance course – comprising a 1.5km swim, 40km bike, and 10km run – with sheer determination and strategic racing. Omandam, only 20 years old and a third-year Human Resource Management student at University of Mindanao, clinched the men’s title in 2:20:24 (20:20 swim, 1:12:12 bike, 44:04 run), surging past more experienced triathletes.

“The bike was manageable but tough because you never know what’s coming. But during the run, I realized I was in a good position because I couldn’t see anyone close behind,” said Omandam in Filipino, who also ruled the 20-24 age category of the event organized by Sunrise Events, Inc. which drew over 1,110 athletes from across the Philippines and other countries.

Omandam, fresh from a fourth-place age group finish in IRONMAN 70.3 Lapu-Lapu, outpaced Arthur Abogado (2:22:26), who dominated the 45-49 division, and Jonard Saim (2:26:21), who settled for third overall.

The Damosa Land 5150 debut not only crowned champions but also cemented its place as a premier race in the Philippine triathlon calendar – one that delivered scenic views, shifting challenges and breakthrough performances from start to finish.

In the women’s race, Lim delivered a breakthrough performance after five previous 5150 starts. She clocked 2:47:33 (26:01 swim, 1:18:50 bike, 58:11 run), finally tasting victory after years of consistent training and recent work with a coach.

“I’ve been preparing for two years now,” said the 32-year-old Lim, who also captured the 30-34 age group title. “The swim was tricky because of the current, and the bike route was really challenging. But the run was almost perfect – shaded and flat.”
Lim held off Faith Garcia (2:50:55) for the overall title, with Alessandra Aquino finishing third (2:53:24) and clinching the 20-24 category crown.
Athletes raced under shifting weather, with overcast skies during the swim giving way to bright sunshine in the bike leg. The run segment, set against a tree-lined path, offered brief relief with its shade and scenic backdrop, though the final uphill stretch proved a punishing end for many.

Other age group champions in the women’s field of the event, held in partnership with Damosa Land, Inc., included Hong Kong’s Giselle Li (16-19 – 3:12:25), Alexis Belen (25-29 – 2:58:46), Aime Teodisio (35-39 – 3:06:23), Joanna Marie Cruz (40-44 – 2:49:25), Catherine Arias (45-49 – 2:48:03), Sheila Tan (50-54 – 3:22:33), and Japan’s Tomoko Dodo (70-74 – 4:03:01).

In the men’s division, York Shan Nasol topped the 16-19 category with a time of 2:38:53, while Eduardo Catoc bagged the 25-29 crown in 2:41:14. Other standouts included John Mark Rama (30-34 – 2:31:47), Patrick Serrano (40-44 – 2:29:14), Swiss national Roman Menz (50-54 – 2:34:41), Erwin Amadeo (55-59 – 3:14:48), Robert Shannon from the US (60-64 – 2:59:39), and Nick Cudmore (65-69 – 3:08:43).

In the shorter Sunrise Sprint race (750m swim, 20km bike, 5km run), Ann Marie Tigullo dominated the women’s field in 1:38:37 (16:45-45:10-33:07), also winning the 16-19 age category.

Other female sprint winners were Sherr Daniot (20-24 – 1:51:23), Regine Valentin (25-29 – 1:41:37), Antonette Bautista (30-34 – 1:39:17), Princess Kedtag (35-39 – 1:36:40), Jacqueline Orilla (40-44 – 2:03:49), and Jonna Menchavez (50-54 – 2:01:17).

On the men’s side, Christiano Tiongko dazzled in the Sprint, taking the overall and 16-19 titles with a time of 1:14:56 (14:08-35:34-22:45), proving a talent to watch in future races.

Franz Paguntalan (20-24 – 1:29:54), Vincent Abrenica (25-29 – 1:22:11), Charis Lester (30-34 – 1:26:05), Darrell Ople (35-39 – 1:22:42), Roberto Senon Jr. (40-44 – 1:30:15), Cris Denopol (45-49 – 1:34:24), Porferio Banquirigo (50-54 – 1:35:02), and Gamaliel Urbi (55-59 – 2:00:03) rounded out the men’s age group winners.

In the team relay, VC Vixens blazed to the women’s title in 56:21, ahead of Tri Sole Sisters 2 (58:04) and Tri Sole Sisters 2.0 (1:02:02). In the men’s category, AIM PH Team posted a blistering 36:07 to defeat Happy Life Team (38:10) and Mind-Over-Miles (41:52).

Samal makes waves as Damosa Land 5150 triathlon unfolds

SAMAL ISLAND – A wave of anticipation sweeps through the Island Garden City of Samal here as it braces for its historic first hosting of a premier sporting event – the Damosa Land 5150 Triathlon – firing off today (Sunday, Sept. 21), at the vibrant coastal community of Bridgeport.

More than just a competition, this Olympic-distance triathlon (1.5km swim, 40km bike, 10km run) marks a significant milestone not only for the island but for Mindanao’s growing stature in the global endurance racing circuit. With over 1,100 athletes from across the Philippines and other countries, including Australia, Japan, Colombia, France, and the USA, this inaugural 5150 event has already made history as the largest first-time 5150 race in the country.

“This event is more than just a race – it’s a celebration of Samal as a premier destination for sports and tourism,” said Ricardo Floirendo Lagdameo, president of Damosa Land, Inc. “We are proud to partner with Sunrise Events to showcase Bridgeport and the island’s natural beauty to the world, while promoting an active and healthy lifestyle.”

Organized by Sunrise Events, Inc., the official licensee of the IRONMAN brand in the Philippines, the event is held in partnership with Damosa Land, Inc., and promises to be an unforgettable fusion of elite sport, tropical beauty and local festivity.

The staging of the 5150 Triathlon signals Samal’s transformation into a viable hub for national and international sporting events, leveraging its pristine waters, scenic landscapes, and enthusiastic community support. With ideal conditions for open-water swimming, cycling and running, Samal presents a unique, world-class setting for multisport competitions and beyond.

“Bringing the 5150 brand to Samal is a milestone not only for Sunrise Events but for Mindanao as well. Athletes will discover a race course that blends natural beauty, cultural richness, and a truly festive community spirit,” said SEI president and managing director Princess Galura.

The race course promises to be a feast for the senses and a test of athletic mettle. The swim leg kicks off in the crystalline waters off Bridgeport, tracing the coast of the island. Athletes will then navigate a rolling bike course offering panoramic views of Davao Gulf and the skyline of Davao City. The action culminates in a run through Samal’s bustling business center, where locals are expected to line the streets in full force, cheering athletes all the way to the finish line.

Adding to the excitement is the Sunrise Sprint, a shorter-distance triathlon (750m swim, 20km bike, 5km run) designed for beginners and short-course enthusiasts eager to experience the triathlon buzz.

The Open Division is shaping up to be a tightly contested showdown. Davao’s own Elgin Ong, Diego Ma, Jan Paulo Bucu, Jay Ramos, and Ruark Cadelina will go head-to-head with strong regional contenders such as Ed Pantujan and Marcel Puentespina of Digos City, Ferdinand Lee of Naga, Hamnor Manabilang of Cotabato City, and others.

From the women’s side, the race is expected to be a close fight among Clare Ciriaco, Ira Kaye Bragat, Ivy Mar Daguplo, and Melgin Hibaya, each looking to etch their name in the island’s sporting history.

Youth is also well-represented, with promising talent like Jared Lao, Joaquin Allones, Matteo Inong, and Marco Calumpang battling in the 16-20 age group, while Ann Marie Tigullo leads the youngest female contenders. The 20-24 and 25-29 brackets are equally fierce, with names like Paolo Laurente, James Van Ramoga, Zoe Bayani, and Regine Valentin in the hunt for podium finishes.

Meanwhile, the relay competition adds a team dynamic to the weekend, with top squads gunning for bragging rights and team glory.

The Damosa Land 5150 is more than a race – it's a glimpse into what the future could hold for Samal Island and Mindanao as a whole. With the successful staging of a race of this scale and international scope, doors are now open for Samal to become a go-to venue not just for triathlons but for other high-caliber sports events – from open-water swimming festivals and cycling tours to running festivals, beach volleyball tournaments, and adventure races.

The support from the Island Garden City of Samal, along with volunteers, local government units, and enthusiastic residents, shows a community ready to embrace sports tourism as a sustainable driver of growth.

Festivities kicked off with the Bigiw Run on Saturday – a 5km fun run inspired by the vibrant outrigger canoes of Davao – setting the tone for a weekend of athletic celebration and community engagement. The event also shines a light on Samal’s cultural heritage, warm hospitality, and commitment to a healthy, active lifestyle.

With corporate support from brands like Ion+ Advanced Electrolyte Drink, Amlan, Salt+Fin, Sante, Sun Life, Manila Bulletin, and more, the Damosa Land 5150 is not just a race – it’s the beginning of something bigger.

More than a race, Samal 5150 aims for global impact

The inaugural Damosa Land 5150 Triathlon unwrapping Sunday (Sept. 21) promises more just a test of athletic strength – it’s a bold step toward putting Mindanao on the global map.

Designed for both potential triathletes and seasoned competitors, the race offers a unique mix of challenge and charm, set against the breathtaking backdrop of a tropical paradise. From a 1.5km swim in Samal’s crystal-clear waters, a 40km bike ride along scenic coastal roads, to a 10km run weaving through the island’s vibrant community and business districts, every part of the course showcases the island's natural beauty and cultural warmth.

But the event is not just about personal victories – it’s about a collective leap forward.

“Our efforts have always been deeply rooted in initiatives that spark a ripple effect of progress. Through events like this, we not only celebrate athletic excellence but also aim to uplift the broader community – from tourism and hospitality to local businesses and grassroots development,” said Cary Lagdameo, president of Damosa Land, Inc.

At the heart of the event is Bridgeport, Damosa Land’s marine lifestyle development, which serves as the iconic venue for the race. With its scenic waterfront views and modern amenities, it underscores Samal’s potential as not just a neighbor to Davao City, but a world-class destination in its own right.

“It’s time to show the world the beauty, talent and quality of service that Mindanao has to offer,” added Lagdameo. “This is more than just a race; it’s a celebration of what makes Samal special.”

With nearly 1,100 participants expected to compete, the Damosa Land 5150 is already shaping up to be a landmark race organized by Sunrise Events, Inc.

“Every stroke, every pedal, and every step is a vote of confidence for this city and region as one of Asia’s must-visit destinations,” Lagdameo said.

For City Mayor Lemuel Reyes, the event is a symbol of resilience and determination – a message of what Samal and its people can achieve.

Race director Julian Valencia shares that vision, calling the triathlon a “dream come true,” born from passion, teamwork and the belief in the power of sport to unite, inspire and transform.

“Bringing the 5150 brand to Samal is a testament to the Philippines’ growing reputation as a premier destination for world-class multi-sport events,” said Valencia. “At the heart of this race is the belief that every finish line crossed is a personal triumph – a celebration of discipline, courage and perseverance.”

Valencia also assured participants and supporters that safety has been a top priority, with carefully mapped swim courses, scenic yet secure bike routes, and a run path designed to engage both racers and the local community.

Adding even more color to the race weekend is the Bigiw Run, a 5km fun run set tomorrow (Saturday) at Bridgeport. Inspired by the bigiw, a vibrant traditional canoe of Davao, this run blends local pride with a festive coastal experience. Nearly 500 runners are set to take part, cruising through a sunset route lined with island flair, music, and community spirit.

With its breathtaking landscapes, welcoming people, and deepening commitment to progress through sports, Samal island is set to become a regular fixture on the global triathlon calendar.

As the first edition kicks off with high energy and even higher hopes, organizers are already looking ahead – eager to make this not just a one-time event, but an annual tradition that will continue to inspire and elevate the region.
