FIGHT FOR WAGE INCREASE.
LABOR DAY Mobilization in Davao City led by Kilusang Mayo Uno emphasize demands of workers for higher wages, oppose Charter Change, and fight against political repression.

They also stand in solidarity with public utility jeepney drivers and operators against the Davao Public Transport Modernization Program. KMU SMR condemns the enforced disappearance of their labor organizer and other human rights violations.

Additionally, they call on Dabawenyos to join the fight for workers' rights and national democracy.

On the 137st commemoration of Labor Day, Kilusang Mayo Uno-Southern Mindanao, together with various progressive organizations, holds a march protest Monday, May 1 from Freedom Park in Roxas Avenue through downtown Davao’s main streets. However, the police barred the activists when they reached Ponciano Street for failure to present a permit.

The present situation of women workers in the country are worsening amidst inflation and anti-poor economic policies, such as the phaseout of jeepneys which the group joins in support of the striking jeepney drivers.

Progressive groups mark the 37th EDSA People Power anniversary today with a protest action here at the Freedom Park in Roxas Avenue, Davao City.

These groups also commemorate the first year since the cold-blooded massacre of the New Bataan 5, including Lumad school teachers Chad Booc and Gelejurain Ngojo II, who were abducted and subsequently killed by troops of the Armed Forces of the Philippines under the Duterte Administration last February 24, 2022.

Beverlyn Gofredo, spokesperson of progressive youth group Anakbayan-Southern Mindanao, slams President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. for the unprecedented economic inflation and worsening plight of the Filipino people. She added that, President Bongbong Marcos Jr. is no different from his father Ferdinand Marcos Sr., the ousted dictator during the EDSA People Power 37 years ago.

Davao City danced to the beat to Rise for Freedom!

While this week has been full of hearts, on 18 February 2023, Gabriela Davao, in partnership with Assumption College of Davao, led the One Billion Rising (OBR) with full participation from different organizations and institutions in the city. This year marks OBR's first decade calling for collective actions of activists worldwide and amplifying their call for systematic changes toward ending violence against women and children once and for all.

With the 2023 One Billion Rising theme "Rise for Freedom," this calls for women's freedom from patriarchy and all its progeny--capitalism, impunity, poverty, oppression, division, exploitation, shame, control, individualism, greed, and violence, among others. The "billion" refers to the UN statistic that one in three women will be r***d or beaten in her lifetime, or about one billion.

The activity coincided with the opening of the International Labour Organization-High Level Tripartite Mission in the Philippines.
