THE BARONG TAGALOG: ELEGANT, ICONIC… AND ROOTED IN COLONIAL CONTROL?

Did you know that the Barong Tagalog — Philippines’ national dress — was originally not made for style or culture?

During Spanish colonization, Filipino men were forced to wear the Barong.

Why? Because it’s made of sheer, transparent fabric.

Spaniards wanted to see through it—to make sure native men weren’t hiding weapons underneath.

It was designed to humiliate and control.
But Filipinos turned it around.

💥 What was once a symbol of colonial mistrust is now a mark of national pride — worn in weddings, ceremonies, and state events.

👏 From oppression to pride — the Barong Tagalog stands as a reminder: We rise, we reclaim, we remember.

The Philippines Was Once Asia’s Second Richest Nation 💰

✅ Post-World War II Boom
After WWII, the Philippines had one of the most stable economies in Asia. In fact, it was second only to Japan in terms of GDP per capita in the region.

✅ Manila Was Once Called the "Pearl of the Orient"
In the 1950s, Manila was one of the most developed cities in Asia — with modern roads, public transport, entertainment, and an educated workforce.

✅ Strong Education & Agriculture
The country had a strong educational system and was a leading exporter of sugar, rice, and coconut — with robust agriculture and industrial sectors.

✅ The Philippine Peso Was Strong
At one point in the 1950s, ₱2 = $1 USD — a sign of strong currency and economic confidence.

✅ Why Did the Philippines Fall?
The 1970s–1980s brought:

- Widespread corruption
- Crippling foreign debt
- Authoritarian rule
- Brain drain (massive emigration of professionals)
- Mismanagement of national industries

✅ South Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore were once behind the Philippines — but caught up and overtook due to strong institutions, innovation, and consistent leadership.

REST IN PEACE, POPE FRANCIS

Ang buong mundo ay nagdadalamhati sa pagpanaw ni Papa Francisco, isang huwaran ng pananampalataya at impluwensiya. Nawa'y manatili sa ating alaala ang kanyang pamana ng pananampalataya at paglilingkod.

"I'm still a student. I'm young. This isn't political to me. The man inside (The Hague) is my father.
So, the kind of gratitude I feel towards the people who love and support him is overwhelming.
To me, he's not the mayor, he's not the president. Tatay (ko) lang." - Veronica Duterte
