The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), in coordination with the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), augmented a joint anti-illegal drugs operation at Sitio Kaybungan, Barangay Bulacan, Looc, Occidental Mindoro, today, May 29, 2026.

The operation was conducted pursuant to a search warrant issued by the Regional Trial Court of Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro. Law enforcement operatives were transported aboard BRP Cape San Agustin (MRRV-4408) to the target area.

Upon arrival at the site, the joint operating team discovered equipment, materials, and chemical substances suspected to be associated with the manufacture of illegal drugs. PDEA assessed and documented the recovered evidence for laboratory examination and verification.

The operation also resulted in the arrest of two suspects at the site, currently under PNP custody for investigation and legal proceedings.

According to PCG Spokesperson, Commodore Noemie Cayabyab PCG, the Coast Guard remains committed to supporting inter-agency operations aimed at preventing the transport and production of illegal drugs, while promoting maritime security and public safety.(Philippine Coast Guard)

Secretary of National Defense Gilberto C. Teodoro, Jr. met with New Zealand Minister of Defence Christopher Penk in an introductory call on the sidelines of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) Shangri-La Dialogue today, May 29, 2026, in Singapore.

Secretary Teodoro and Minister Penk discussed the Status of Visiting Forces Agreement (SOVFA), recognizing its significance in enhancing defense cooperation and institutionalizing military engagements between the Philippines and New Zealand.

The defense officials also exchanged views on the participation of the New Zealand Defence Force in flagship exercises, including Balikatan and Salaknib, underscoring the value of these engagements in advancing interoperability, readiness, and regional cooperation to address security challenges. Both sides also expressed interest in exploring expanded defense cooperation in various areas.

On the Philippine side, Secretary Teodoro underscored the value of convergence among like-minded countries, including greater engagement with Pacific Island nations to strengthen regional partnerships and promote stability, resilience, and a rules-based international order. The Philippine Navy held the christening ceremony for BRP Rajah Lakandula (PS21) on May 26, 2026, at Quay 7, Naval Operating Base–Subic, Zambales, as part of its 128th Anniversary celebration, with Rear Admiral Joe Anthony C Orbe PN, Commander, Philippine Fleet, as keynote speaker.

“Today’s unveiling of the ship’s name and bow number represents more than identity – it represents purpose. It reflects the continuing modernization of the Philippine Navy and our resolve to build a force that is more capable, responsive, and prepared to protect our maritime domain,” Rear Admiral Orbe said.

The ceremony formally unveiled the ship’s name and bow number which marks an important milestone in the vessel’s integration into the Philippine Navy fleet and symbolizing its future role in strengthening the country’s maritime defense and security capabilities.

“As we formally christen BRP Rajah Lakandula (PS21), may she sail with honor, strength, and purpose. May she serve as a symbol of courage, dedication, and national pride for generations of Filipino sailors to come,” Rear Admiral Orbe added.

As part of the ongoing Joint Coordinated Border Patrol between the Philippines and Indonesia (CORPAT PHILINDO-40-2026), the Naval Forces Eastern Mindanao (NFEM), through BRP Artemio Ricarte (PS37), conducted various at-sea serials together with the Indonesian Navy vessel KRI SELAR (879) on May 25, 2026, along the Philippine-Indonesian maritime boundary.

The activity marked the second day of the bilateral patrol aimed at strengthening maritime security cooperation and enhancing interoperability between the Philippine Navy and the Indonesian Navy. Participating units carried out coordinated communication exercises, RASAP, and SEMAPHOREX designed to improve operational coordination and readiness in addressing shared maritime security concerns.

Likewise, the Philippine Air Force C-208B aircraft (5671) conducted an Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) mission in connection with the ongoing CORPAT PHILINDO-40-2026.

The Philippine Air Force (PAF) and the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) reaffirmed their enduring defense partnership during the 8th PAF-RTAF Airman-to-Airman (A2A) Talks held on May 26, 2026, at the PAF Headquarters, Colonel Jesus Villamor Air Base, Pasay City.

The PAF delegation was led by Major General Pablo E Rustria Jr PAF, Vice Commander, PAF, and Co-Chair of the 8th PAF-RTAF A2A Talks. In his remarks, Major General Rustria highlighted the longstanding cooperation between the two Air Forces through key leader engagements, education and training exchanges, information sharing, and various capacity-building initiatives. He emphasized that sustained dialogue and collaboration enable both Air Forces to explore new opportunities to enhance interoperability, strengthen air operations cooperation, and contribute to regional peace and stability.

The RTAF delegation, meanwhile, was headed by Air Marshal Wisanu Niamkome, Deputy Chief of Air Staff (Personnel) and Co-Chair of the talks. Air Marshal Niamkome highlighted the significance of the A2A Talks as an essential platform for strengthening mutual understanding, expanding professional exchanges, and advancing defense cooperation between the PAF and RTAF.

Prior to the formal discussions, Air Marshal Niamkome paid a courtesy call on Major General Rustria Jr. During the meeting, both officials exchanged insights on ongoing and future bilateral cooperative activities and reaffirmed their shared commitment to further enhancing military-to-military relations between the Philippines and Thailand.

The PAF-RTAF A2A Talks serves as the primary annual coordination mechanism for bilateral activities between the two Air Forces. One of its key outputs is the finalization of proposed engagements and collaborative activities for inclusion in the succeeding Five-Year Work Plan.

The continued conduct of the A2A Talks reflects the strong and growing partnership between the Philippines and Thailand, anchored on mutual trust, shared strategic interests, and a collective commitment to promoting regional security, stability, and defense cooperation. (Philippine Air Force)

The Philippine Army, through the 9th Infantry “Spear” Division, formally opened the Philippines-Australia Army-to-Army Exercise (PAAAE) “Kasangga” 2026-1 in an opening ceremony at the 9th Infantry Division Grandstand, Camp Elias Angeles, San Jose, Pili, Camarines Sur on May 25, 2026.

The month-long bilateral exercise, conducted in partnership with the Australian Army (AUSA), aims to strengthen interoperability, enhance command and control capabilities, and improve combined arms operations among the participating forces. Training activities included in the ongoing Kasangga include intelligence operations, movement and maneuver, fires support, civil-military operations, sustainment, medical operations, jungle warfare, and force protection.

A total of 278 Philippine Army soldiers from the 83rd Infantry Battalion, 9th Division Training School (9DTS), 565th Engineer Construction Battalion, 9th Field Artillery Battalion, and 21st Cavalry Company, are participating in the said bilateral exercise. For its part, the Australian Army deployed 86 personnel. Marking their first-ever participation in Kasangga, the Philippine Air Force and the Philippine Navy respectively deployed 18 and 22 personnel.

The first “KASANGGA” Exercise conducted in the Bicol Region was held in November 2024. The successful conduct of the initial exercise paved the way for expanded training engagements and strengthened military partnership between the two partner nations.

KASANGGA 26-01, which means “ally” or “partner” in Filipino, includes training scenarios that will challenge the participating troops' skills and expertise while enhancing their knowledge of each other's tactics, techniques and procedures.
