“Success is not actually a linear thing,”

These were the words emphasized by keynote speaker Felicitos C. Villena Jr. as he shared an emotional and reflective speech during the 9th Commencement Exercises of Dulag National High School held at the Dulag Gymnasium.

Villena reflected on his humble beginnings, raised by a laundrywoman grandmother and a hardworking mother, he witnessed firsthand the struggles of poverty, which strengthened his belief that education is the key to breaking life’s limitations.

“Education is the only way we can break the cycle of poverty,” he stressed.

Villena urged graduates to embrace the reality that life is a continuous journey, where achievements open doors to greater opportunities and responsibilities ahead.

“The world out there is so much big. But our dreams are bigger. What you see yourself is what you will become 8 to 10 years from now,” he said.

The speaker further explained that success is not about competing with others but about recognizing one’s own strengths, noting that perseverance, consistency, and passion helped him overcome insecurities and challenges in his career.

“You don’t have to compete with other people—the only competition you need to beat is the last version of yourself,” Villena advised.

Villena further emphasized that long-term success depends on integrity, competence, and accountability, which are essential qualities in both personal and professional life.

“Integrity is about your reputation, about your name. Competence, honesty, accountability. If your character is questionable, in the long term, you will not survive,” he stated.

He concluded by encouraging graduates to believe in themselves and things that they might achieve in the future years.

“This is a beginning. The future really lies in you. Celebrate your success, your hard work. Congratulations.” Villena ended.

To evaluate the school’s emergency response and identify areas for improvement, an assessment meeting was held at the Science Laboratory room following the conduct of the 1st Quarter National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED), March 12.

Led on the school’s side by School Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (SDRRM) Coordinator Jesus E. Nuevas Jr., the meeting brought together assigned teachers, a representative from the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), and partner responders who participated in the drill.

During the discussion, SFO2 Glen Punzalan of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) presented key observations from the activity, citing concerns related to evacuation speed, line formation, silence during movement and overall response time.

The assessment was conducted through verbal observations, formal discussion, checklisting and a feedback session.

Participants noted that while the drill was generally successful, several aspects still require adjustments to improve emergency preparedness.

In line with the observance of Fire Prevention Month, Punzalan also shared fire safety reminders including the proper use of fire extinguishers and the appropriate response during fire incidents.

Among the recommendations raised during the meeting were the possible redesign of the evacuation area, stricter discipline during evacuation and the reinforcement or revision of existing procedures.

Punzalan also recommended that the school conduct drills not only during every NSED, but on a more regular basis suggesting at least monthly exercises to further strengthen preparedness and response.

In Step for Safety

To strengthen preparedness for possible disasters and emergencies, Dulag National High School took part in the 1st Quarter National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) on March 12, 3:30 p.m.

Initiated by the school’s School Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (SDRRM) office under the leadership of Mr. Jesus E. Nuevas Jr., and with the assistance of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) and local rescue personnel, the DNHS community carried out safety procedures observed during emergencies.

Activities included the duck, cover, and hold procedure, orderly evacuation to the designated evacuation area and a fire response simulation in which BFP personnel set up a controlled fire scenario that was extinguished by DNHS teachers using a fire extinguisher.

With all students, teachers, and school personnel present joining the activity, the drill highlighted the importance of disaster readiness, especially as DNHS is considered one of the most vulnerable schools in Dulag in the event of a strong earthquake.

Nuevas expressed his gratitude for the cooperation shown by the school community and emphasized the importance of sustaining such efforts to ensure continued preparedness for disasters.

“Thank you for your cooperation in helping maintain a safe and orderly school. I hope this continues so that we will always be prepared for disasters,” he said.

An improvised clinic bed was replaced with hospital-grade equipment after Dulag National High School Batch 2001 alumni donated a standard adjustable hospital bed to the school clinic, February 13.

Formal turnover of the donation took place at the clinic through a brief ceremony that included the signing of official documents.

Designed for basic clinical care, the hospital bed features adjustable head and leg sections, side rails, lockable wheels, and a durable mattress platform to support safer patient positioning.

School administrators said these features improve comfort and allow better monitoring during medical observation, first aid, and emergency response.

Expected to benefit from the upgrade are students, teachers, and staff who require short-term or urgent medical attention on campus.

Present during the turnover were some members of the batch, including alumni who now serve as teachers at the school and others working as professional nurses.

Acceptance of the donation was led by school administrators and school principal Flora M. Pica, who emphasized the support of the alumni as well as the significance of the donation.

"The new clinic bed helps our school provide safer and more comfortable medical care, and we sincerely thank Batch 2001 for their generosity and continued commitment to the welfare of our school community,” Pica said.

Hosting duties for the 2026 Grand Alumni Homecoming will also be assumed by the batch following the school’s long-standing rotation among graduating batches.
