This private studio started out as a band rehearsal space back in 2002. As I learned more about mic techniques for recording drums, I added more recording gear and became obsessed with capturing the sound of the the drum set, the most complex musical instrument to record. I am still on that quest for the perfect drum sound, as a drum set player and as a recording engineer.

The FULLEST drum sound I have ever recorded was done with just 4 mics instead of close-miking all the drums, which usually takes 9-12 mics. I use a combination of the Glyn Johns and Recorderman techniques, as shown here in the photos. Just finished tracking drums on a Jazz tune and a vintage 50s groove—all played with traditional grip.
