Engineering drawings are a type of technical drawing, with the purpose of conveying all of the information required to manufacture a product or a part.

It is not necessary to be an artist in engineering, but a solid understanding of drawings is required; otherwise, the path ahead will be difficult. Plates are created from the depths of every engineering and architecture student's imagination, combining science and art on a single piece of paper, and are developed and transformed into real results. However, the fact that lessons are still taught online adds another barrier for these students, especially when it comes to designing plates.

In a four-cornered room, architecture students put down and fixed the pale cream vellum board on their drawing table and then brought out the concept in their thoughts with their skillful hands down to the tip of their pencils, combining art and science, and put it into the pale cream paper to create the so-called plates. Commitment and hard work are in the background as they transform their thoughts into a thorough and accurate plan. Nights were turned into days to complete the task, and back-to-back revisions were made before it was eventually and flawlessly finished.

According to Tito Saycon, a second-year BS in Architecture student, when asked about the challenges he had encountered in making his plates, "Actually, all I have to worry about is my patience and discipline in making my plates because I do have a lot of free time to do my plates."

True enough, tenacity and self-discipline are the most important keys to achieving your goals for what you are working toward and aiming for. While infinite forbearance is demanded when faced with setbacks and difficulties, a firm hand is also required to conquer and surpass each challenge along the way.

Engineering drawing is a lovely synthesis of art and science that has the capacity to transform your ideas into tangible outcomes. It qualifies as art due to the quantity and complexity of the drawings that go into it. And, in contrast to science, which is constrained by rules, laws, and limits, art is solely a means of putting one's imagination on paper.

โ€“ Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross

On this solemn day of November 1, we celebrate the saints of the Church who have attained heaven. Although many may already be saints, All Saints' Day observances celebrate all those who have entered heaven, including saints who are recognized by the Church and those who are not.

Generally, All Saints' Day is a Catholic Holy Day of Obligation, meaning all Catholics are required to attend Mass on that day, unless they have an excellent excuse, such as serious illness. It was formally started by Pope Boniface IV, who consecrated the Pantheon at Rome to the Virgin Mary and all the Martyrs on May 13 in 609 AD. The holy day was eventually established on November 1 by Pope Gregory III in the mid-eighth century as a day dedicated to the saints and their relics. The May 13 celebration was subsequently abandoned.

Holy day customs differ around the world. In the Philippines, graves can be painted and repaired by family members. Many of these practices blur the distinction between All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day.

Many have heard spooky tales of ghostly hauntings and mysterious apparitions from various people. Some of us even experienced this horrific encounter and felt the presence of paranormal forces and metaphysical energies, which are very impossible to resist. It immediately sends signals to our brains, giving us bloodcurdling screams and nightmares afterward.

A bizarre incident happened one day in the College of Engineering and Architecture.

It all started like any typical day in the prestigious CEA building, with lots of plates to get done. I was in the classroom listening to the discussion of my last period class while trying to keep my mind off how I would finish my plates this week. The lecture seemed to be boring because of the lifeless and monotonous teaching style of the instructor. Looking out into the overcast through the casement window, the afternoon sky seemed to be orange as the sun moved down to the west horizon, creating mysterious shadows of the slender branches of the trees.

The door suddenly creaked in the middle of the discussion when somebody opened it slowly. โ€œGood afternoon, Sir. Iโ€™m sorry Iโ€™m late,โ€ the young woman greeted as she entered the room.

She has a pale complexion with dark circles beneath her dull eyes. The cut and drape of her flowing white dress were complemented by her hair plastered down to her scalp like a doll. Walking across the room, the rest of the class, including Engr. Gustavio, didnโ€™t seem to notice her. He was continuously and tediously delivering his topic. She grabbed an empty chair and sat next to me while glancing around the room. For a couple of seconds, we suddenly gazed into one anotherโ€™s eyes. She looked unfamiliar to me. Maybe she was from the other section and was invited to sit in on our discussion. Then she plastered a creepy smile across her ashen face and into her eyes.

The hairs on the back of my neck bristled after seeing her smile โ€“ with a wide grin and a downward turn of her eyebrows and eyes smoldering with anger, expressing an evil purpose. That was the creepiest smile Iโ€™ve ever seen. Startled, I ignored her and pretended to excuse myself for urinating.

Halfway up to the third floor CR, I heard heavy footsteps on the stairs. Then my eyes caught a glimpse of a dark figure flickering on the wall. Mystified, I stood there for a minute and looked around the surroundings โ€“ only to find out that the area was deserted. Students were in their respective classes, and nobody was really in there.

I tried not to bother my mind with what I saw and kept myself walking towards the CR. A small sign reading MALE indicated that I was in the right place, finally. Before I could grab the k**b, the door in front of me suddenly creaked open, as if an invisible host invited me to get inside. Breath puffing. A shiver ran down my spine when cold air blew straight into my face. My body trembled in fear at the abrupt temperature change.

โ€œIs anybody here?โ€ I asked as I stepped into the room. I didnโ€™t expect any response at all, knowing that I was alone in the CR.

Unexpectedly, the door closed itself with a forceful bang. The earsplitting sound managed to shake the floor and roared down to my ears. When the noise was gone, I went to the urinal and used the second one.

After I was done pi***ng, I opened the faucet and washed my hands. All of a sudden, the lights flickered on and off. I thought at first that it was caused by an electrical fault, but on second thought, maybe it was a sign of something supernatural in nature. I jumped with fright when I heard the husky voice of a woman moaning in agony. Although I was terrified, I mustered all the courage I could find and slowly stepped towards the stall where the sound was coming from. I slightly opened the door and peeked through the creek. The sound faded and I just froze when I couldnโ€™t see anything except for a single hand without an arm or a body, flushing the toilet. I was supposed to run, but my feet were glued to the floor.

It took me several minutes before I came back to my senses. I went to the lavatory and bent down my head to wash my face. When I stood up straight and looked at my reflection in the mirror, I screamed out loud. I saw my face covered with blood, as if I had washed my face with my blood instead of water. Then there she was โ€“ the woman who had sat next to me earlier was now behind me. That creepy smile was still on her face. She drew closer to me and strangled me to death with her slender hands. I could feel the pain in my throat and I could hardly breathe. I fought with every ounce of my strength, but I canโ€™t move a single muscle. Eyes popping, the last thing that registered in my brain was the sound of the mirror shattering into a million tiny pieces.

Minutes passed when I heard somebody calling my name. โ€œTaiver! Taiver! Wake up! We are now dismissed.โ€

I opened my eyes and looked around. I felt disoriented since my head gradually transitioned to a wakeful state. It came to my attention that nothing really happened. I realized that I slept during the class discussion and that all those horrible things that went on were just a dream from the wildest of my imagination. I promised myself that I would never fall asleep again and would listen attentively to the lecture. Although those were merely part of the sleep cycle, they could mean something and serve other purposes โ€“ who knows?

Consumption of iodine is so underrated all around the world. People take no importance of the functions of the micronutrient in human's health, when, in fact, iodine is essential for our growth and development. With this, Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) Prevention Day or the World Iodine Deficiency Day is observed every year on October 21.

This event aims to raise public awareness of the importance of iodine in one's health and encourage everyone to ensure sufficient iodine consumption. People are advised to eat iodine-rich foods such as fish and sea foods, dairy products like milk and egg, and of course the iodized salt.

The body needs iodine to make thyroid hormonesโ€“ a hormone that needed for proper bone development, fat stabilization, as well as brain development. It also aids in fast metabolism. Sadly, iodine deficiency is a major public health concern; globally, it is estimated that 3 out of 10 individuals have insufficient iodine intake. As a result, many suffer from IODINE DEFICIENCY DISORDER (IDD).

Several studies show that iodine deficiency during pregnancy and infancy may impair growth and neurodevelopment of the offspring and increase infant mortality. The spectrum of IDD also includes delayed physical development, reproductive failure, as well as preventable illnesses such as hypothyroidism, cretinism and goiter.

According to World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Childrenโ€™s Fund (UNICEF) and Iodine Global Network (IGN), the recommended daily intake of iodine is 120 ฮผg/day for school children and 150 ฮผg/day for adults. This means that we only need one (1) teaspoonful iodized salt in our lifetime for us to be physically and mentally healthy. Hence, what chu chu?

"We are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided" - J.k. Rowling

NORSUNIANs, the wait is over! Last October 16, 2022, The STRAW COMMITTEE of NORSU FSG kicked off its first orientation in preparation for the official launching of this new, student-centered executive committee as one of the initiatives of our student leaders. The event was ignited by knowledge and zeal for service through the presence of Ms. Alia Abadian, human rights advocate and a member of Kabataan Para Sa Karapatan Negros Oriental. One of the orientation's highlighted vital points was "Students' rights are human rights" as part of our Academic Freedom.

We, the STRAW COMMITTEE, are encouraging you, our fellow Norsunians, to support us as we progress towards an inclusive society where student safe spaces are safeguarded and our rights are defended because "it is only through our collective effort that we can defend our rights, our constituents, and our campuses."
