REGULARIZATION OF VEGETABLE PRICES| INTRODUCED IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
House Bill No. 9889 has been proposed by Congressman Eric Yap, granting the Department of Agriculture the authority to impose and regulate farm gate prices for highly perishable vegetables. Once enacted, this bill will establish a floor price for vegetables to ensure that farmers do not incur losses, regardless of whether the produce is sold or not.
For example, if the imposed standard farm gate price of cabbage is P80 per kilo, this will serve as a floor price. Vegetables can still be sold at a higher price, but not below P80, ensuring that farmers continue to earn a profit. This standard farm gate price will be subject to seasonal review and adjustments based on agreements.
In cases where the vegetables cannot be sold in the market due to an oversupply, the agency will have a buffer fund to purchase the vegetables at the farm gate price. Whether the government sells them at a higher price or not, farmers are guaranteed not to incur losses, and there will be no need to discard any vegetables.
Support from Congress is sought to approve this bill to prevent wastage and revenue loss for local farmers. It is high time to prioritize the welfare and livelihood of our farmers, who are the backbone of our Nation.
