Environmental groups, youth advocates, and urban poor residents assembled along Quirino Ave. today, May 26, to protest the planned clearing of more than 600 trees for the 40.62-kilometer Southern Access Link Expressway (SALEX) project of San Miguel Corp. (SMC).
Led by Kalikasan – People’s Network for the Environment (PNE), demonstrators emphasized that the massive tree-cutting would worsen intensifying urban heat levels as the country braces for a potential “super El Niño,” a phenomenon projected to trigger severe drought and record-breaking temperatures.
The groups called on SMC, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, and the Marcos administration to immediately halt the ecological destruction caused by the expressway project.
Broader ecological concerns were also highlighted during the protest, as the groups called for the protection of the nearby Pasig River, which faces separate threats from the proposed 19.37-kilometer Pasig River Expressway (PAREX), also spearheaded by SMC.
