NEWS UPDATE: The emergency room at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) has exceeded its maximum patient capacity.

Life-threatening cases will still be admitted, but patients with non-emergency conditions are advised to seek treatment at other hospitals, the hospital said in a statement.

This is the second time this year that the PGH emergency room has operated beyond capacity. The first instance was due to a limited oxygen supply.

LOOK: UP Manila college-based publications, Ang Tagamasid of College of Arts and Sciences, Vital Signs of College of Nursing, and The Public Herald of College of Public Health delivered their term reports at the UP Solidaridad congress today, August 4.

With some publications undergoing revival, they cited persistent issues on insufficient funding, staff inactivity, and the pressing need to capacitate the newsroom with strengthened reportage and sustained advocacy.

Notably, this year marks The Public Herald's first appearance on the UP Solidaridad congress. Editor-in-Chief Sofia Isabelle Bautista underscored their mandate to amplify public health campaigns through critical and community-rooted reporting.

Hundreds of high school students took the University of the Philippines College Admission Test (UPCAT) 2026 at UP Manila during the first day of the examination yesterday, Aug. 2.

UP Manila, along with 116 other testing centers, accommodated about 140,000 examinees during the two-day entrance examination across the country.

Amid continuing budget cuts and limited classroom capacity, the country’s only national university could only offer admission to around 10-15% of the UPCAT takers.

Last , only 17,996 or 13% were offered admission from the pool of 135,236 applicants. Of the 17,996 passers, 55% came from public schools while 45% were from private schools.

Results of the examination will be released next year and passers of the highly competitive admission test will serve as UP’s incoming freshmen for A.Y. 2026-2027.

In this year's much-awaited UP College Admission Test (UPCAT), may the future Iskolars ng Bayan be reminded of the commitment that bears the heaviest weight more than any type of prestige—the call to serve the Filipino masses.

Each step that every Iskolar takes toward their dreams is an uphill battle to build an emancipating society and advance the quality of life of ordinary Filipinos.

Now more than ever, the honor of learning in UP’s halls demands the courage to rise for causes greater than oneself.
