𝙈𝙖𝙢𝙪𝙣𝙤 𝙠𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙙 𝙣𝙜 𝘽𝙖𝙗𝙖𝙮𝙡𝙖𝙣, 𝙋𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙨! ✨

by Jasmine Chuatoco and Joseinne Gatchalian

When the spark of passion within every nursing student is nurtured in diligence and fueled by grit, it ignites into a radiant flame. Heralding the theme, “Ningning: Kislap ng Silakbong Panata”, the Class of 2028 officially affirms their commitment and dedication to the nursing profession through their Pinning and Candle Lighting Ceremony last January 22, 2026, at the UP College of Nursing Auditorium. United as Batch Sinagtala, this milestone marked not only a rite of passage but a solemn vow to serve with compassion, dedication, and purpose.

THE YOUTH WILL NOT BE SILENCED! HANDS OFF WAKS BUENAFLOR!
Unity Statement of Condemnation on the Filing of Sedition Charges Against UPD USC Chairperson Buenaflor

The Office of the Student Regent, student councils, publications, organizations and Iskolar ng Bayan across the UP System strongly condemns the filing of sedition and inciting to sedition charges against UP Diliman University Student Council Chairperson and KASAMA sa UP Executive Vice Chairperson Joaquin Buenaflor, other student leaders, student journalists, and sectoral representatives who participated in the anti-corruption protest held on September 21, 2025.

The filing of these charges reveals the direction of state power today: one that treats dissent as criminal, and those practicing their democratic rights as threat.

These cases that were filed on multiple occasions and are anchored on baseless and politically motivated accusations are not isolated legal actions. They form part of a broader pattern of intimidation, harassment, and suppression of democratic rights. The revival of sedition as a weapon against critics was crafted not to serve justice, but to silence the people.

The right to protest, to organize, and to speak truth to power are not privileges granted by the state but are fundamental democratic rights. In a university that upholds academic freedom and social responsibility, the participation of students and journalists in mass actions against corruption must be recognized as a legitimate expression of political engagement, not grounds for persecution.

The Office of the Student Regent together with formations and individuals across the UP System affirms that student publications, councils, and organizations play a crucial role in safeguarding transparency, accountability, and people’s interests. Attacks against them are attacks against press freedom, student representation, and the democratic character of the University of the Philippines itself.

We therefore call on the UP Administration and the Board of Regents to take a clear and principled stand in defense of our students and constituents. The University must not remain silent while its students are subjected to fabricated charges and legal harassment for exercising their rights.

We likewise reiterate our firm opposition to the Anti-Terrorism Law, which continues to provide the framework for red-tagging, surveillance, and the criminalization of activism. Instead of pursuing accountability for corruption, the state once again chooses to target those who expose it.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and his corrupt administration must be held accountable for using the machinery of the state to silence dissent instead of addressing the corruption within their own ranks, even his own. The filing of sedition charges against students, journalists, and activists who participated in legitimate anti-corruption protests exposes a government more afraid of public scrutiny than committed to justice. No amount of intimidation can suppress a youth and a people determined to defend democracy, accountability, and genuine public service.

The whole UP System Community stands in solidarity with Joaquin Buenaflor, all student journalists, activists, and sectoral leaders facing these unjust charges. We demand the immediate dismissal of all sedition cases, an end to political persecution, and the protection of democratic rights.

The youth will not be silenced.
The Iskolar ng Bayan will not be intimidated.

Hands off student leaders!
Ibasura ang mga kasong sedisyon!

HINDI BIBITAW! IMMEDIATE ACQUITTAL FOR FRENCHIE MAE CUMPIO AND MARIELLE DOMEQUIL! DROP ALL TRUMPED-UP CHARGES AGAINST TACLOBAN 5! ABOLISH NTF-ELCAC!

The College Editors Guild of the Philippines, together with the press and human rights community, calls for the immediate acquittal of community journalist Frenchie Mae Cumpio and lay worker Marielle ‘Maye’ Domequil from all trumped-up charges the state has hurled against them.

Six years in jail stands as an inhumane and detestable punishment. Duterte’s terror laws, alongside Marcos Jr’s proliferation of them, have robbed Frenchie and Maye of their proactive youth. No financial restitution or acquittal can compensate for those stolen years, which could have fueled productive service to marginalized communities. This ordeal concretely manifests a corrupt justice system that sustains state violence for its own benefit.

Frenchie and Maye’s resolute choice to serve the Filipino people—bolstering their activism from the academic spaces to the repressed communities of Eastern Visayas—directly dismantles the state's distorted narrative of red-tagging, coercion, and sham ‘anti-terrorism’ campaign. Depraved social realities of rampant corruption, development aggression, militarization, and injustice mobilized today’s youth even further, drawing inspiration from the likes of the Tacloban 5.

We then demand that the Marcos Jr. government end all forms of lawfare against citizens and watchdogs who simply upholding their responsibilities. It must acknowledge their vital contributions to nation-building, rather than relentless persecution that ultimately fails to address systemic failures and only accelerates the regime’s evasion of accountability.

The state must also provide human rights defender Alexander ‘Chakoy’ Abinguna, one of the Tacloban 5, unconditional access to a speedy and fair trial. He must not languish in jail any longer.

Furthermore, we assert the total abolition of NTF-ELCAC and its entire machinery, lulling the nation into a false sense of security under the pretext of counter-insurgency. Its ‘terror-tagging’ endangers journalists' press freedom and Filipinos at large through harassment and fabricated threats. No apparatus, established by executive order or law, must threaten our freedom of expression essential for young leaders forging a just nation.

We challenge the Marcos administration–should it truly commit to protecting press freedom and prioritizing education—to end all forms of attacks against student journalists and youth leaders. No compromises exist in unleashing their full potential through fearless sociopolitical engagement and critical discourse.

The Guild enjoins all student journalists, press freedom advocates, and human rights defenders to demand justice and accountability for the Tacloban 5 and all victims of human rights violations.

The times call upon us to persistently expose state terrorism and disinformation targeting legitimate dissent and community reportage. That we must uphold, without hesitation.

We must not let impunity in this generation threaten the future we and all generations deserve.

Drop all charges against Tacloban 5!
Free all political prisoners!
Defend press freedom!

UNITY STATEMENT

[FEATURES] A Flicker Behind the Scenes: UPCN Lantern Parade 2025

by Kate Macapagal and Jamie Antonio

As dusk dawned on Taft Avenue, sounds of gleeful cheer and sights of vibrant handmade lanterns filled the otherwise busy streets, radiating a much-needed glimpse of the Christmas spirit. University of the Philippines Manila (UPM) students, faculty, and staff alike gather to celebrate one of the most anticipated events of the year, a tradition that never fails to ignite warmth and belongingness in the hearts of the community– the 2025 Lantern Parade. For one special night, the campus closes its halls and celebrates the culmination of the year, under the tender glow of lanterns and the nostalgic noise of familiar chatter. With the theme “Pasko sa UP Manila: Patuloy na Nagmamahal, Lumalaban, at Nagwawagi,” students, faculty, and staff alike of the UP College of Nursing wish to encapsulate the year that has been–a journey filled with hearts that yearn, struggle, and learn as they charge forth in life’s daunting challenges.

IN PHOTOS: The 2025 Lantern Parade was an event filled with ignited warmth and compassion for a community that is brought together by empathy. Within a thriving country that yearns for change and restoration, it serves as both a tradition and reminder for the university to embody honor and excellence, the same way a love for service prevails; to tirelessly spark hope for others, even in bleak and daunting situations.

Students of the UP College of Nursing (UPCN) celebrate joy, camaraderie, and devotion as they spend this Christmas to become patient advocates, kind spirits, and thankful persons for blessings brought about by the year that has been. From preparing a timeless piece of a culturally and socially immersed lantern, to sharing their presence and wishes in the many festivities of the parade and cheerdance, students, faculty, and staff of UPCN showcased nothing but unity and sincerity throughout this meaningful event. May this then be representative of the nursing values they carry with immense clarity as it reflects in their thoughtfulness, resilience, and fortitude not only in challenges that the health sector faces, but against all adversities.
