In an ideal world, the Philippine Senate would be a chamber that commands respect. Itโ€™s supposed to be a haven of high-level lawmaking where meaningful debates on decision-making would take place. Senators are elected to the highest legislative body in the service of the Filipino people. Except, itโ€™s far from what it's supposed to be.

Over the past years, the Philippine Senate has been subjected to drama after drama that many Filipinos had to live by while waiting for any semblance of concrete action. However, a recent bombshell had entered the villa โ€“ a coup, seemingly orchestrated by the โ€œDuterte Blocโ€, to reinstate Senator Alan Peter Cayetano as Senate President, ousting the then Senate President Tito Sotto.

The following days after that can only be described as akin to a reality show: heated arguments, assertions, and an entire cast of senators walking out of the Senate halls. This is not what the Filipino people wanted to see.

In a seemingly orchestrated move, Senator Joel Villanueva made a motion to clear all leadership seats in the Senate, which then passed, after which Cayetano and Sotto were nominated. The voting ended with 13 โ€“ 9 in favor of Cayetano. With Batoโ€™s sudden guest appearance after a six-month hiatus, the division of the house was secured for the side of Cayetano and his allies.

Bato was under the Senateโ€™s custody for a few days and was able to escape yet again. This happened just a few hours after a suspended Senate Sergeant at Arms triggered a shootout between them and the National Bureau of Investigations (NBI) agents looking to arrest the senator under the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

This action grew even more suspicious as this election happened shortly after the House Panel approved the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte, which Cayetano and his allies were also supporting. At this point, one would begin to ask, where do their loyalties align?

With the election coming to fruition, the Senate majority is now composed of Cayetano and his cohorts. And almost immediately after taking a seat, majority member Senator Rodante Marcoleta motioned to amend Rule 14, Section 41 of the Rules of the Senate, which enables the lawmakers who arenโ€™t physically present in the Senate to be able to take part in the plenary sessions via remote means.

This is after Batoโ€™s escape. So, if it were to succeed, a running fugitive, who shouldnโ€™t even be able to participate in a hearing that requires all 24 active senators to be actually present, would still be able to have a say in the Senateโ€™s actions and deliberations moving forward. This means major national decisions, quorums, and even talks of impeachment. And it is not helping the case of the minority bloc, which has just been steamrolled by the majorityโ€™s sudden coup.

However, a similar case has happened in the past, as current House Representative Lila De Lima was also pushed to a possible remote participation in plenary sessions through the minority blocโ€™s resolution due to her detainment in 2017. But even during the Covid 19 pandemic, when this amendment actually occurred, she was never able to participate in the sessions.

Marcoletaโ€™s ploy is a direct risk to the power that oneโ€™s actual presence can hold. It weakens the authority of the Senate, which relies on real-time deliberation and discussions inside the chamber. And amending the rule once again so that a fugitive may be able to secure the majorityโ€™s decisions is an entirely different story.

As if the drama werenโ€™t โ€œdramaticโ€ enough, SP Cayetano began reorganizing the committee. Now, with every senator from his bloc holding the vice chairpersonship and membership of committees such as Technical and Vocational Education, Basic Education, Culture and Arts, and Public Order.

Most notable being Senator Robin Padillaโ€™s placement as the Vice Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Basic Education. This was met with outrage among netizens, as Padilla is known for his lack of pertinence in education, while other senators were just as qualified. He also infamously claimed that the younger generation is โ€œweakโ€.

It really begs the question as to what they are actually planning, taking so many seats in these committees. Itโ€™s as if theyโ€™re only doing this as a political strategy rather than it being merit-based. Although the Senate President has prepared to offer chairpersonship to those in the minority, it becomes doubtful when we consider the fact that this only came up right after securing these spots for themselves, in under a month of being in the seat of power, no less.

Therefore, the Minority blocโ€™s recent walkout from the Senate was not a surprising reaction to what has been a dominating performance by Senate.

Bear forgiveness to thine heraldries--where songbirds sang yet unheard. In time, in essence--a message to bear, to celebrate, to give praise, though time is fleeting and moving fast. Yet, the heralds, the song shalt still sing, unto the heavens, into your hearts, such as that very day that passed through.

Blueprint wishes a belated happy birthday to the brave, the wonderful, the one and only: May your wishes hold true and your goals be met, into the skylights, into the dawn of a new era. Bring forth love, understanding, and wisdom through the lens of an esteemed writer. Once again, we wish you a belated happy birthday! From your Blueprint Family.

Tarry not in worry nor fear, and walk through the mist with pride. Visions may blur into fearful omens, yet to see what is beyond--of what is true, one must still take a mighty first step.

Kumatawan si Saura sa Catalyst of Change Partylist na hangad ang โ€œChange that works for all; , , โ€, samantalang umakyat at tumayo naman sa pwesto si Dustin Hernal sa ilalim ng Alliance of Students for Alternative Politics (ASAP) Partylist, na may kampanyang โ€œ , , .โ€

'neath the shadows of fleeting boughs
A scion, the beholder hath seen it now
Wonderous, bountiful, yet cold to the touch
Akin to fate, to destiny, innately clutched

Yet, the cold never harmed.
Nor, never charmed
It was and always will be forever
Not unlike today, bountiful as ever.

To the scion, the artist, the wise,
Xavier Pilipil, the one with gifted eyes
Blueprint wishes you the happiest birthdays
Upon this bountiful, blessed day

Remember to be brave, to dance, to love
As those who had above
For in this world, the happiest are blest
Such as your soul, your heart, fully blessed.

The past few days have truly shown the nation what our Senateโ€™s primary agenda currently is: self-preservation, the bastardization of the law, and the weaponization of influence and authority to further propagate their personal agenda. Now, this may come off as nothing new. Weโ€™ve all heard and seen the same scenario play out time and time again, throughout numerous past administrations. However, given already worsening socio-economic conditions in the country, one couldnโ€™t help but ask if our votes are worth what we are experiencing right now.

On the 11th of May, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued a warrant of arrest for Senator Dela Rosa on grounds of human rights violations during the โ€˜War on Drugsโ€™ conducted during the term of then-president Rodrigo R. Duterte, who is currently under ICC custody himself for those same charges. In response, Dela Rosa reappeared on the same day, after a six-month absence, only to be chased around by government agents attempting to carry out the warrant.

At the same time, a significant leadership change was underway. Cayetano also successfully ousted Senator Tito Sotto as Senate President, allowing him to take control of the Senate just before Dela Rosaโ€™s return and the impending impeachment hearing for Vice President Sara Duterte.

Taken together, these events raise questions that extend far beyond coincidence. On the night of the 13th, gunshots were reported in the premises, with both staff, guards, and journalists panicking and scrambling to both cover what was currently happening while finding somewhere safe to hide. In the aftermath, preliminary investigations say that armed men attempted to enter the building, which was met by warning shots from the Office of the Sergeant-at-Arms (OSAA), but retracted this statement, saying the exact details are inconclusive. But the biggest headline of that night? Dela Rosa allegedly escaped and is now at large.

Regardless of the motives and intentions of all factions, one thing is clear: The Senate has become not just a venue for legislation but a spotlighted stage for political maneuvering, manipulation, and a puppet show of competing narratives. In an update the day after, Cayetano rejects the use of the word โ€˜escapeโ€™, as in his eyes, there was no obstruction of justice that was done if there had been 'no warrant presented'.

Meanwhile, the cost of this political theatre is felt outside of the national institutions. A hearing for farmers was halted due to what took place, denying a chance of aiding and addressing our local agriculture, especially when the threat of an El Niรฑo slowly creeps towards us. Furthermore, time and resources that should have been spent on urgent economic concerns are instead consumed by internal conflict and damage control, leaving the nation at large vulnerable and directionless. This also stalls important reforms and hearings for public welfare, disaster preparedness, and security. It potentially drives away investors who see the Senate strife as a point of instability for any tangible prospects and investments.

In the end, the question is not whether these events are shocking or intense, but whether they have become intolerable for the Filipino people. When institutions meant to uphold accountability instead appear to bend around it, the value of the people's vote begins to feel uncertain and disrespected, not because it lacks power, but because it ends up being taken for granted by those whom the collective many have hoisted into these positions in the first place. Instead of acting in accordance with professionalism and political dignity, some members of government have turned to cowardice and stageplay. Scenes like this have played out time and time again in Philippine history. The difference now lies in whether they will continue to be endured or finally acknowledged.

Mindanao State Universityโ€“General Santos โ€” Opisyal nang inilabas ng Commission on Elections (COMELEC) ng College of Engineering ang resulta ng isinagawang halalan para sa Engineering Students Organization (ESO) at sa mga bagong halal na lider mula sa limang departamento ng kolehiyo para sa Academic Year 2026โ€“2027.

Nung sa first-year representative pa lang, maraming errors sa pag-shade and we need to consider if counted ba ang votes nila or hindi even if errors yun. Aabutin ng approximately two days ang counting based din sa past elections. Limited lang ang people sa COMELEC, and we canโ€™t ask for help sa other people as it is mandatory na there shouldnโ€™t be other people to help us count so that the votes will not be altered,โ€ pahayag ng COMELEC.

Alam na ng system kung anong year and course ang voters, so basically, ang mag-aappear lang once naka-log in sila ay yung mga kailangan lang nilang i-vote, especially yung mga tumatakbo para sa year representatives,โ€ dagdag ng COMELEC.

Para sa Junior Institute of Electronics Engineers of the Philippines (JIECEP), nahalal bilang pangulo si Clairelette Gengoni.
