In Vietnam, an innovative and eco-friendly alternative to plastic straws has emerged—biodegradable straws made from *Lepironia articulata*, a type of wild grass that grows abundantly in the Mekong Delta. Locally known as “co bang,” this grass has a naturally hollow stem, making it perfectly suited for use as a straw without requiring extensive processing. After being harvested, the grass is cut, cleaned, and dried in the sun or baked to increase shelf life. The straws can be used fresh (lasting about a week in the fridge) or dried (lasting up to six months).
What makes these wild grass straws remarkable is that they are 100% natural and compostable. They break down quickly without releasing harmful microplastics, offering a sustainable solution to single-use plastic pollution. Many Vietnamese cafes and eco-conscious businesses have adopted them, promoting local craftsmanship while protecting the environment. This small yet impactful innovation reflects Vietnam’s growing commitment to sustainability.
