Finally a break from consecutive months of playing DOAM games. We just played Here to Slay and Libertalia: Winds of Galecrest, both card-driven games that still carry a bit of that cutthroat edge we love, but with a much more relaxed, laid-back vibe, sort of.

And I finally clinched my first win in Libertalia after 15 tries. 😁

Finally got to play in our new gaming nook just right beside the usual hut where we used to play.

For this weekend, we played with Dune Imperium: Uprising, this time with the Bloodlines expansion. The new contents are truly solid, and the expansion rebalances the game for the better.

We had two games logging a whopping total of 7 hours, and 28 minutes.

Our first game, with 4 players, clocked in at 4 hours and 24 minutes. Most of the group hadn’t played DIU in 10 months, so most of them forgot how to play it. We indeed played it at a turtle pace with some AP moments.

Our second game with 3 players still clocked in at 3 hours and 4 minutes, but this game was definitely one of the most memorable, most tensed and most climactic games we've ever had. It was a neck and neck game until I pulled off back to back clutch plays in rounds 7 and 8 to steal and seal the victory. After the game, I had to take my maintenance meds because I can literally hear my heartbeat and my head was throbbing with mild pain. It was truly an anxiety-inducing game but it was all worth it.

We ended the night with a delicious dinner, thanks to our generous host.

Dune Imperium: Uprising + Bloodlines
is a 9.5/10 from me. Definitely a perfect game, almost.

Ankh Day!

Finally got Ankh: Gods of Egypt on the table, I'm glad it didn’t disappoint! After all the inner debates I had about the game, it was a relief to see it shine with the group . We initially planned a 4-player session, but one of the guys went MIA, so we went ahead with 3 players, and ended up playing three consecutive games. We would've kept going if the night hadn't caught up with us.

What I love about Ankh:

1. Thinkiest of the Lang trilogy – Easily the most cerebral of the three. It's like multiplayer chess with gods—full of tension and careful planning.

2. Best combat system IMO among the three – With only 7 cards to battle with, every clash feels strategic and full of bluff potential. It’s lean, tight, and super satisfying when you outplay your opponent.

3. God Powers & Ankh powers – We love the asymmetry. Each god feels unique, and the ankh upgrades allow for some strategic direction and clever plays depending on the situation.

4. Scenario variety – Multiple setup and rule variants really boost replayability. Every game feels fresh.

Some nitpicks but nothing game-breaking:

1. The Merge – In our second game, I came last and ended up being the one who merged. Losing everything you built to become an extension of another player isn’t exactly fun, but I get why the mechanic exists. Ankh is pretty punishing if you fall behind, and the merge helps prevent a runaway victory, I guess. We played 2/3 games without the merge.

2. Last player disadvantage – One of the guys pointed out that the last player in turn order can feel a bit behind, especially when the first ones go for the seemingly meta action of Move + Summon combo.

Despite these flaws, Ankh turned out to be an absolute blast. It’s the kind of game that makes you feel smart when a
bluff pays off or when you pull off a big scoring move. Can’t wait to dive deeper into it!

Final rating: Ankh: Gods of Egypt – 9/10

Best expansion to try first????

Finally completed Eric Lang’s legendary mythic trilogy of dudes-on-a-map games: Blood Rage, Rising Sun, and Ankh!

Blood Rage is hands-down our group’s favorite — fast-paced, gloriously aggressive, and packed with overpowered card combos that make drafting feel like a whole game in itself. Pure fun.

Rising Sun holds its own with its deep strategy underpinned by negotiations, alliances and right amount of backstabbing and betrayals. Timing is everything in this game, and deals can make or break you. We’ve had some unforgettable moments with RS, and some heated arguments too.

As for Ankh, we haven't played it yet, but it will be this coming weekend. As what we’ve seen from reviews and playthroughs, it’s the most tactical of the three — often compared to chess, especially at 2 players. And that controversial merge mechanic? Let's see how it will pan out with our group.

Now that CMON has sold the IP to Tabletop Tycoon, these editions will practically soon become antique items. Looking forward to TT's remastered version of these 3 classics starting with Blood Rage: Valhalla.

The saga continues!

Finally got Cyclades: Legendary Edition (retail version only) to our table! For our first game, we clocked in at 2 hours and 50 minutes—but what an epic and legendary first game for us.

It was a true back-and-forth battle. Just when Ryan was on the verge of victory, I managed to pull off a satisfying combo by snatching one of his metropolises and constructing another. It felt like I had the victory in the bag. But the very next round, tragedy struck. Al completely blindsided me with back-to-back attacks on both my territories that held metropolises. I lost both battles—and eventually, the game. It was a painful defeat, but moments like that are exactly what made the experience so memorable and compelling. But I vow revenge!

I'm not sure if it's recency bias, but Cyclades is currently a top contender for my ā€œNew-to-Us Game of the Yearā€, right up there with other standout DOAM (Dudes on a Map) titles like Blood Rage, Rising Sun, and Inis. So far, it’s a close toss-up between Blood Rage and Cyclades, but more plays are definitely needed to crown a favorite.

Up next on our table: Ankh: Gods of Egypt.

Lastly, I have to say, Bruno Cathala is now hands down my favorite game designer. I’ve long loved 5 Tribes, Sea Salt & Paper, and 7 Wonders: Duel, and now Cycladesjoins that list.

Our 26th Board Gaming Session of 2025

Our group's enthusiasm for Rising Sun remains strong, and I was happy to bring it to the table once again. Al, the only one among us who hadn’t yet claimed a victory in Rising Sun, finally secured his first win. 😁

We then shifted gears and revisited two of Reiner Knizia’s classic action/bidding games. First up was RA, where Charlie emerged victorious in a tightly contested match. As for me, my winless streak in RA continues — now 0 for 10! 🄓

To wrap things up, we played two rounds of Modern Art. Reden took the win in the first game, and I managed to clinch the second.

By the end of the day, only Ryan went home without a win, but there’s always next time! šŸ˜„

Back at the HQ. Our gracious host Ryan AniƱon treated us to a delightful lunch of fried tuna and soul-comforting tuna tinola. Afterward, we enjoyed a back-to-back series of 1v1 board games—starting with 7 Wonders: Duel, where I secured a political victory, followed by Wingspan: Asia, which ended in a close match with a final score of 92–86 in favor of my opponent. A sudden heavy downpour eventually brought our gaming session to an early close, prompting us to call it a day.
