Lorelie Pacquiao’s CCTV Initiative in General Santos City

By Christy Jane Tan and James Tan

Mayor Lorelie Pacquiao has prioritized citywide CCTV installation as a cornerstone of her security strategy. Here’s a focused breakdown:

- Current Status: The city has installed CCTV cameras at key locations, with each unit costing ₱200,000. These cameras are operational and monitored by local police and the city’s security teams, providing real-time visibility to deter crime and ensure public safety.
- Expansion Plans: A ₱115 million budget is being sought to expand the CCTV network to cover all areas of General Santos, with a focus on high-risk zones. The goal is to create a "360-degree" surveillance system to enhance monitoring and response capabilities.
- Stakeholder Support: The initiative is backed by the Public Safety Office, Attorney General Salis, Engineer Mayden, Dr. B**g Dacera, and local law enforcement, including the GTIP (General Santos City Task Force on Internal Security and Peacekeeping).
- Community Impact: The mayor emphasizes that full CCTV coverage will not only improve security but also boost public confidence, as residents and visitors will feel safer in public spaces.

This push aligns with Pacquiao’s broader agenda to make General Santos a safer, more resilient city for its residents.

GenSan Bolsters Security with P115M Budget Bid for Expanded CCTV Coverage; P200K Camera System Now Operational

By Alex P. Josol

General Santos City is aggressively pushing forward with a significant upgrade to its city-wide security and traffic monitoring infrastructure. While the formal turnover ceremony for the integrated system is still awaited, city officials—including Mayor Lorelie Geronimo Pacquiao, Public Safety Office representatives, Attorney General Salis, Engineer Mayden, and Dr. B**g Dacera—have celebrated the success of current operations, noting that many cases have already been solved through the support of existing security measures.

To further safeguard the community and expand the reach of law enforcement, the city is actively seeking a budget of P115 million. This substantial fund is earmarked for acquiring new security equipment and extending protection to other areas identified as vulnerable or high-risk.

The current Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras, which cost approximately P200,000 each, are reported to be fully installed and operating at optimum capacity. The Mayor highlighted that these cameras provide a constant and effective monitoring capability, allowing police and the General Santos Traffic and Intelligence Personnel (GTIP) to have a clear view of the city and its residents.

The ultimate vision is to achieve full CCTV saturation across General Santos, making the security of the city a top priority. Mayor Pacquiao affirmed that GenSan is a "3D" area—implying constant, comprehensive surveillance—and declared that there is "no place" for criminal elements due to the round-the-clock monitoring and strong police presence. Officials are currently finalizing the technical examination of the system and setting a timeline for the full expansion, anticipating that the completed project will greatly enhance public safety and crime deterrence.

GenSan ‘Always Ready’ for Strong Quake; Mayor Assures Integrity of Buildings and Smoother Recovery Support

By Jeniffer Q. Josol

General Santos City is maintaining a high state of readiness against the threat of strong earthquakes. Mayor Lorelie Geronimo Pacquiao directly addressed public concerns about the city's preparedness and the structural integrity of local government buildings, offering a firm assurance that the city has been preparing for this possibility for a long time and is "always ready."

The Mayor highlighted the continuous dedication of the Local Government Unit (LGU), particularly the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRMC), which "always does" activities and drills to ensure the city is prepared for any seismic event. While acknowledging that the exact timing of a quake is unpredictable and a matter of "prayer," the city's focus remains on sustained preparedness and public safety.

In a move to strengthen post-disaster response and recovery, the Mayor is set to approve a measure following the current meeting. This will involve the entire LGU and citizens of General Santos to secure more organized and swift support. The goal is to ensure smoother coordination and have "more players" on the ground so that the community can recover faster from any calamity.

The Mayor affirmed that the LGU's commitment is to assist the people with greater efficiency.

At Least 22 Dead After 6.9-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Cebu, Philippines

By Alex P. Josol

A powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Cebu City late Tuesday night (Sep 30), leaving at least 22 people dead and dozens injured, officials confirmed.

The tremor, which hit just before 10pm, caused widespread power outages, toppled buildings, and damaged infrastructure across Cebu and nearby islands. The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines reported tripping of power lines, while local police said several transformers exploded during the quake.

Rescue operations continued overnight in the towns of San Remigio and Bogo, where collapsed buildings left residents trapped. Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro said emergency teams, including doctors and nurses, were being rushed to affected areas. "We need medicine, food, and medical volunteers," she appealed.

The provincial government also confirmed damages to homes, a hospital, and several churches, including a historic structure in Daanbantayan that crumbled during the quake.

Residents described scenes of panic as aftershocks shook the region. “We felt dizzy as lockers and furniture moved violently,” said a firefighter in San Fernando. In Bantayan town, witnesses reported church walls collapsing and homes suffering structural cracks.

Authorities said more than 37 people were injured. With aftershocks as strong as magnitude 6 still rattling Cebu, rescue efforts remain difficult. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) warned of possible further damage and abnormal sea movements but ruled out a tsunami threat.

The Philippines, located in the seismically active Pacific “Ring of Fire,” frequently experiences destructive earthquakes. Tuesday’s tremor is among the deadliest in recent years, recalling a 6.7 offshore quake in 2023 that killed eight people.

Palace Dismisses Coup Speculations: Marcos Confident in AFP Loyalty

Malacañang on Tuesday denied rumors of a coup d’etat against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., stressing that the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) continues to stand firmly behind the Commander-in-Chief.

“The President has full trust in our military, that they will remain steadfast and loyal to the Constitution,” said Palace press officer Undersecretary Claire Castro during a briefing.

Castro acknowledged the frustrations of both soldiers and the public over corruption controversies, particularly those tied to flood control projects, but emphasized that these grievances do not translate into disloyalty to the government.

She also rejected claims that the AFP, under General Romeo Brawner Jr., was considering withdrawing its support from Marcos to establish a new administration.

General Brawner, she noted, has reiterated that the military will not take part in destabilization efforts and will instead uphold its constitutional duty to protect the Republic.

For weeks, the AFP has been actively countering online disinformation about supposed coup plots, including allegations linking the CIA and Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. to efforts to oust Marcos—claims the military branded as “dangerous disinformation.”

“The AFP remains united, disciplined, and professional,” Brawner stressed in a recent statement, assuring the public that the military’s allegiance lies with the Constitution, not with political factions.
