Speaking of the warehouse district in Austin, check out this view of the district back when it contained actual warehouses. Now it's filled with skyscrapers, bars, restaurants etc .. A great look at the capitol, too!

The Fannie Davis Town Lake Gazebo (originally “Town Lake Gazebo”), built in 1969, is an octagonal, open air, mid-century modern structure with a funnel-shaped hyperbolic paraboloid roof that resembles an inverted morning glory flower. Stylistically eclectic, complex in its angularity, and finished in concrete, rough-hewn limestone, and painted wood, the gazebo defies simple categorization. The gazebo was the first public structure built in the effort to beautify the south shore of Town Lake (now lady Bird Lake), which was created after the construction of Longhorn Dam on the Colorado River in 1960. The Austin Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), established in the 1950s for women working in the construction industry, spearheaded and raised funds for the project. -- description adapted from the National Register of Historic Places Registration Form at "Details for Town Lake Gazebo (Atlas Number 2100004970)"

The Arcane Texas Fact of the Day:

The granite that was used for the construction of the Texas capitol building in Austin was quarried at Granite Mountain in Marble Falls. Granite Mountain is an 866-foot dome of solid pink granite that covers 180 acres and is the largest quarry of its kind in the U.S. A special track, visible in this 1880s photo, was built to haul the granite to the rail line in Burnet. To this day, granite from Granite Mountain is still being used for state building construction in Austin.

The Arcane Texas Fact of the Day:

In 1884, a ladies swimming club was formed at Austin's Barton Springs. In the interest of modesty, only one man was allowed within hearing distance as a lifeguard ----- a precaution in case any of the ladies started to drown. But he was under oath to keep his eyes shut and his face turned away from the swimmers so as not to accidentally see any of the women in their bathing attire.

The 600 block of Congress Avenue in Austin, 1946. So crisp! I see the Baptist Cervice Center, Zales, Rapp Brothers, Western Union, and McKinnon's. Holiday lights stretch across the street. If you look closely you can see two sailors in discussion, standing on the corner of Congress Ave and West 6th Street. Really a remarkable shot.
