There is no real freedom without press freedom.

A journalist’s role goes beyond writing stories, disseminating information, or taking photos for the public eye. They are the custodians of truth. Every article, every image, every voice speaks volumes—telling stories that silence can never hold.

Since the restoration of democracy in 1986, 147 journalists have been murdered in the Philippines, according to Reporters Without Borders (RSF). This grim number marks our country as one of the most dangerous places for media workers—an unsettling truth that echoes the price of speaking out.

Journalists are the ones who stand behind every protest against tyranny, who refuse to bow down to lies and hypocrisy. They do not retreat when threatened; instead, each risk sharpens their resolve to stand for what is just and to fulfill their duty: to deliver the truth, untainted and unbroken.

Under Republic Act No. 11699, also known as the “National Press Freedom Day,” August 30 of every year is dedicated to honoring this cause. Yet this day is more than a holiday. It is not a celebration—it is a protest. It is a reminder of the journalists who have fallen, of the voices silenced in the pursuit of truth, and of the mission we must continue.

Now is not the time for silence. Now is the time to stand and speak. Defending press freedom today means securing a freer, better tomorrow.

Let the truth be heard.
Let the truth seekers speak.
Defend Press Freedom!

𝐍𝐄𝐖𝐒 | JES opens doors for future managers

Building the future managers of tomorrow, Junior Entrepreneurs Society (JES) throws a welcome party for the freshmen of the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration major in Human Resource Development Management (BSBA-HRDM) with the theme “Step In, Stand Out: Your BSBA Journey Begins” held at the campus gymnasium today, August 26, 2025.

To warmly embrace the freshmen into the BSBA field, the JES officers prepared a variety of activities, including talent showcases, trivia, parlor games, and a dance showdown—all designed to entertain and engage the new students.

“College is not only about passing exams, it is about knowing yourself as a person,” shared Mr. Gesan G. Sarupan, Adviser II of JES. He emphasized that college is not confined to the four corners of the classroom or the exams one aces, but about self-discovery. “Be active, join activities, and take part in school life,” he added.

“Being part of JES is an honor and opportunity because, among 111 first-year students, I was chosen to become their president,” Joy Bellina, one of the freshmen and the first-year representative, said in an interview expressing what she felt for being part of JES. “I know that being part of this organization will be challenging but also full of fun,” she remarked.

The event not only welcomed the freshmen but also became an opportunity for dreams to be nurtured and for new doors of possibilities to open.

24/08/2025

𝐂𝐎𝐋𝐔𝐌𝐍 | Dreams on Hold: When Learning Becomes a Luxury

As we stand at the pinnacle of human progress, education has emerged as one of the most profound and universally recognized basic human rights. It lifts people out of poverty, narrows social inequalities, and lays the groundwork for sustainable development. More than just academic instruction, education equips individuals with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions, challenge ignorance, and meaningfully contribute to a dynamic and ever-evolving society.

And yet, it is deeply troubling that this fundamental right—this bedrock of advancement—remains increasingly out of reach for many.

What barriers have made education feel like a distant luxury and how can we dismantle them to empower the next generation?

The answer is painfully clear: we must confront and resolve the financial crisis that continues to hinder accessibility to education—a crisis that remains stubbornly unresolved.

It is disheartening to hear people say that poverty kills dreams. But is it truly poverty, or is it the educational systems that fail to accommodate those experiencing financial instability?

Too often, institutions set high academic and financial standards under the guise of excellence—standards that, whether intentionally or not, exclude bright and deserving individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. Many schools and universities now seem more concerned with prestige and rankings than with inclusion and access. While scholarships and financial aid exist, they are often limited, competitive, and difficult to obtain.

I firmly believe that education is a right, not a privilege reserved for the wealthy. Yet, the current system frequently favors those born into financial security, leaving behind students with potential but lacking resources. Standardized testing, tuition fees, and limited aid disproportionately burden low-income learners, widening the gap between dreams and reality.

According to Article 26 of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, everyone has the right to quality education. This right should not depend on one’s socioeconomic status. It should empower people to pursue their dreams—even amid financial difficulty—not deepen the divide between privilege and poverty.

Thus, we must stand at a crossroad. The education system must evolve from being a barrier to becoming a bridge—a source of empowerment where all individuals, regardless of their financial background, have access to quality learning.

Dreams should never be dictated by wealth. Poverty doesn’t kill dreams—systems that fail to provide equal opportunity do.

Let us break the stigma that quality education is reserved only for those who can afford it. Let us tear down the wall that separates ambition from access.

Everyone deserves to learn, to grow, and to dream—equally and fairly. Because if education remains a privilege, how can we ever end poverty? And if we don’t act now—then when?

𝐍𝐄𝐖𝐒-𝐅𝐄𝐀𝐓 | From Costumes to Creativity: NORSU-G embraces the ASEAN spirit

Strengthening cultural appreciation and honoring unity in diversity, students, faculty and staff of Negros Oriental State University-Guihulngan Campus graced the floor with elegance and sophistication as they showcased their traditional costumes for the 58th Founding Anniversary celebration of ASEAN, with the theme, "ASEAN: Inclusivity and Sustainability,” held at the campus gymnasium on August 20, 2025.

Beyond the vibrant parade of national attire, the celebration unfolded into a series of enriching activities designed to deepen awareness and appreciation of ASEAN including Poster and Slogan Making, Essay Writing, Vlog-Making Contest, ASEAN Quiz Bee, and the selection of the Best ASEAN Costume from the audience.

This year's celebration placed emphasis on promoting regional awareness and showcasing ASEAN’s culture and values, while nurturing creativity and critical thinking among participants and strengthening their understanding of the region’s political, social, and cultural dimensions.

“Collaboration over competition. [...] ASEAN is a celebration of who we are, where we belong, and what we can achieve then,” Dr. Philner P. Salindo, Assistant Campus Director for Administration, shared echoing the essence of ASEAN—not only as a political and economic union but a family bound by shared aspirations.

As the festivities drew to a close, the celebration stood as more than just an annual tradition. It became a reminder of ASEAN’s enduring legacy and a call to action—for governments, institutions, and people alike—to continually uphold the principles of peace, cooperation, and unity in diversity.

By celebrating ASEAN at 58, NORSU–Guihulngan not only reflected on the past but also looked forward, embracing a vision of inclusivity and sustainability for generations to come.
