The origins of Karate trace back to Okinawa, Japan, and are deeply rooted in the island's unique history and cultural interactions.

Okinawan Martial Arts ("Te"): The precursor to Karate was a martial art known as "Te" (meaning "hand") in Okinawa. This system of self-defense was influenced by the indigenous fighting styles of the Ryukyu Kingdom, of which Okinawa was a part.

Chinese Influence: Beginning in the 14th century, Okinawa had active trade and cultural exchanges with China, especially with the Fujian province. Chinese martial arts, particularly forms of Kung Fu, were introduced to Okinawa and integrated with the local fighting techniques. This fusion of styles greatly influenced the development of what would eventually be known as Karate.

Introduction to Japan: Karate was introduced to mainland Japan in the early 20th century by Okinawan masters like Gichin Funakoshi, who is often credited with popularizing the art. In Japan, Karate was further systematized, standardized, and incorporated into the physical education curriculum. It also began to spread internationally from Japan.
