LIVE: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and his fellow Leaders from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) convene with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi at the 28th ASEAN-Japan Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on October 26, 2025.

This is the first meeting of the regional bloc with Japan’s first-ever female Prime Minister following her historic election.

The Summit agenda includes ways to further enhance shared achievements, foster new horizons of cooperation, and continue to reaffirm the values of friendship and solidarity already established between ASEAN and Japan.

Dialogue Relations between ASEAN and Japan was first established in 1973 and was later formalized in March 1977. For more than five (5) decades, significant progress has been achieved in areas of mutual cooperation such as political-security, economic-finance and socio-cultural ties.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., along with fellow Leaders from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), convened for the Plenary Session of the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on October 26, 2025.

The Plenary Session highlighted ASEAN’s central theme this year, ‘Inclusivity and Sustainability,’ which comes at a pivotal time as the regional bloc collectively faces challenges such as political uncertainties and increasing economic fragmentation.

One of the main events during the Plenary Session was the Handover Ceremony of the Second Protocol to Amend the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA). They also discussed the upcoming signing of the ASEAN-China Free Trade Area (FTA) 3.0 Upgrade, which is expected to mark a new chapter in their partnership.

For the Philippines, President Marcos Jr. reaffirmed the country’s commitment to a future-ready ASEAN. He acknowledged the nation’s responsibility to lead during the first year of implementing the ASEAN 2045 strategic plans.

Following the opening ceremony of the 47th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and Related Summits, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. engages in a discussion with fellow ASEAN Leaders during the Plenary Session at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center (KLCC) in Malaysia on October 26, 2025.

During the Session, Leaders tackle crucial issues related to ASEAN’s community-building and external relations, including ways to deepen regional integration, stimulate economic growth and enhance the Region’s connectivity.

Leaders also discuss efforts to reinforce ASEAN unity and centrality, as well as to strengthen the regional bloc’s commitment to a rules-based multilateral order in the evolving global geostrategic landscape.

One of the main events during the Plenary Session is the Handover Ceremony of the Second Protocol to Amend the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA). It is a free trade agreement (FTA) that seeks to facilitate the movement of goods within the Region by reducing and removing tariffs and non-tariff barriers.

For the Philippines, President Marcos Jr. reaffirms the country’s commitment to a future-ready ASEAN and acknowledges the nation’s responsibility to lead the initial year of implementing the strategic plans for ASEAN 2045.

Marcos Jr. joined fellow Leaders from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) for the Opening Ceremony of the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

President Marcos Jr. vowed to champion the country’s advocacies in promoting an open, inclusive and rules-based international order as he meets with regional counterparts to continue strengthening cooperation among ASEAN Member States and Dialogue Partners.

He also expressed his full support for Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairship this year and the vision of promoting inclusive and sustainable development within the regional bloc.

A significant highlight of the Opening Ceremony was the inclusion of Timor-Leste as ASEAN’s 11th Member State, where President Marcos Jr. and fellow Leaders officially signed the Declaration of Admission.

This year’s Summit focuses on the theme, ‘Inclusivity and Sustainability,’ emphasizing the Region's collective commitment to a unified, resilient and responsive community that addresses the needs of its people.
