This afternoon, I had a one-on-one consultation with a client from Canada.
We spent about an hour talking business.
As usual, I asked my favourite question: “How did you guys find me?”
I expected them to say Facebook, because I’ve been very active here lately. But his answer surprised me.
“No, we don’t use Facebook. We were building a fintech, a payment gateway and we needed a digital marketer who could help us grow globally. We started searching on Google for the best digital marketer in Nigeria or India. Your name came up first.”
Pause.
Then he explained something most people won’t guess: they were choosing between India and Nigeria because labour costs in Canada are too high for a new company trying to cut costs.
They needed experts, but they also needed to be smart with cash, so they looked where talent is strong and wages are lower.
He didn’t find me on Facebook.
He didn’t get my number from a friend.
He typed a phrase "Who is the best Digital Marketer in Nigeria" on Google and my name popped.
He checked other people too, news features, websites, social proof, Wikipedia and when he saw consistency and credibility, he called.
That moment hit me hard.
Let me tell you the truth:
Many people burn millions on ads each month.
But Ads stop when you stop paying.
SEO is different, it’s like Mama Ngozi planting a tree that bears fruit for years.
My one-hour consultation was priced at ₦1,000,000 (less than $1,000 after conversion).
They originally wanted someone to relocate to Canada and be a full-time hire.
I told them:
“If I’m joining, I’m joining as a co-founder, not staff.”
After some minutes of discussion,
They agreed. Today I’m a co-founder in that payment gateway company, a company I didn’t start, but entered through positioning and being findable.
I didn’t submit a CV. I didn’t chase a job. They came searching for me.
For the past 8 years now, Since I started my Career as a Digital Marketer, I have achieved the following using my Search Engine Optimisations(SEO) Skills:
1. Built trust before we met. Google ranking = instant credibility.
2. Pulled clients who don’t need convincing. They find you - they already believe.
3. Saved millions in ad spend. Positioning converts to long-term value.
4. Multiplied my value. A 1million Naira consult became equity and partnership.
If you have a skill, business or brand - do this starting today:
1. Own a keyword. Be the answer to “best (your skill) in (your country/city).”
2. Show proof. Testimonials, case studies, features, make background checks easy.
3. Position first, hustle second. Stop chasing every gig, build what people search for.
4. Know the global market. Companies shop for talent where quality meets affordability, be findable there.
5. Negotiate properly. For early-stage startups, push for equity not just salary.
Ads = short-term noise.
SEO = long-term assets.
The poor keep buying ads hoping for a miracle. The smart build systems that pull money to them.
If you’re skilled and invisible on Google, you’re invisible to rich opportunities.
