First-year law students of the University of San Agustin
College of Law are set to engage in a battle of wits and words as they participate in the 7th Annual Dean Emeritus Cesar Tirol Memorial Cup - USA College of Law Debate. The event is currently being held at the University of San Agustin - Rada Hall, June 14.

The annual debate, organized by the members of the Parliament, aims to commemorate the legacy of Dean Emeritus Cesar Tirol, a revered figure in the university's legal community. Beyond remembrance, the event also seeks to foster and develop crucial debate and discourse skills among the college's newest set of legal minds.

Participants’ argumentative prowess and critical thinking will be rigorously put to test as they navigate the Modified Oxford Oregon Debate Style this year. The competition promises to be a showcase of emerging legal talent and a testament to the legal excellence of the students of the USA College of Law.

𝗦𝗣𝗝𝗜 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟮-𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟳: 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲

To discuss innovative plans for the judiciary, Atty. Laura C.H. del Rosario, Deputy Clerk of Court and Judicial Reform Program Administrator, thoroughly shared the plans of the aforesaid government body under the Strategic Plan for Judicial Innovations 2022-2027 or the SPJI, with the faculty and staff and students of University of San Agustin, yesterday, at University Learning Center, USA.

According to the Supreme Court, SPJI serves as the court’s blueprint for judicial reform and has three targeted outcomes, to wit: Efficiency, Innovation, and Access. It generally aims to adapt to the modern development in technologies and efficiently and effectively apply it to the dealings of Philippine courts, particularly in its administration of justice, internal operations of the courts, access to courts, and other indispensable judicial administrative functions which are all anchored to its four (4) guiding principles: Timely and Fair Justice, Transparent and Accountable Justice, Equal and Inclusive Justice, and Technologically Adaptive Management.

Judge Elijo Sharon Herrera-Bellones, at the commencement of the program, delivered her welcome remarks, while Atty. Romel C. Bellones closed the said event, both reminding law students of their imperative role as future members of the legal profession.

Dean Emeritus Cesar Emilio T. Tirol was a prominent legal educator and former Dean of the University of San Agustin (USA) College of Law. He led the College from 1977 to 1997, achieving several milestones. As Dean, he led with integrity, compassion, and an unshakable commitment to academic excellence and justice.

Dean Cesar Tirol's legacy is part of a distinguished lineage of legal educators at USA College of Law. His father, Atty. Benjamin H. Tirol, served as the college's second dean starting in 1947. Continuing the family legacy, his son, Atty. Jose Mari Benjamin Francisco U. Tirol, is the current dean, making the Tirols a three-generation legacy in the institution's leadership.

Dean Cesar Tirol passed away in 2023, but his contributions are alive and continues to inspire law students and educators alike.

The Tirol Cup stands as a testament to Dean Cesar T. Tirol's enduring commitment to legal education and excellence. By fostering a culture of rigorous debate and intellectual engagement, the competition continues to inspire and develop future advocates in the legal profession.

𝗕𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗦𝗶𝗯𝗼𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿’𝘀 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗩𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

The Case Music Video competition, a Law Night staple, saw each batch creatively interpreting significant Supreme Court cases through the medium of music video. This year, Batch Sibol emerged as the Champion with their powerful rendition of "Deliverance," focusing on the compelling case of Mare Clare Ruiz vs. People. Their video masterfully captured the nuances of the case, earning them not only the top prize but also the award for Best Cinematography, and recognition for Edren Buday as Best Supporting Actor.

Batch Hiraya secured the First Runner-up position with their entry titled "13," also centered on the Mare Clare Ruiz vs. People case. Their creative interpretation was further acknowledged with the Best Poster award. The Supreme Court case of Mare Clare Ruiz y Serrano vs. People of the Philippines (G.R. No. 244692) involves Mare Clare Ruiz who was convicted of homicide for killing Paulita Bonifacio. Ruiz admitted to the killing but claimed insanity as a defense. The Supreme Court ultimately ruled for her acquittal.

Second Runner-up honors went to Batch Talaghay for their case music video on Libi vs. IAC which they entitled “Libi”. Their thought-provoking presentation also earned them the awards for Best Actor for Rhaemond Refugio and Best Lyrics/Song. The Libi vs. Intermediate Appellate Court (IAC) case established the primary liability of parents for the damages caused by their minor children who live with them, emphasizing the importance of parental diligence.

Batch Sigasig claimed the Third Runner-up spot with their unique choice of Fujiki vs. Marinay, the only civil case among the finalists. This case revolved around the recognition of a foreign judgment nullifying a marriage based on bigamy, raising complex issues of private international law.

The glamour and poise of the student body were celebrated in the "Mr. and Ms. Law Night" pageant. Lj Carnjae of JD 2D was distinguished as Mr. Law Night 2025, while Glyngie Basilan of JD 3C was crowned Ms. Law Night 2025. Their grace and charisma captivated the audience, adding a touch of elegance to the evening's festivities.

Michael Tagudiña and Maviyah Lee Debarbo were named Mr. and Ms. Sui Generis of Law Night 2025.

Adding a unique flair to the pageant segment were the titles of "Mr. and Ms. Sui Generis," recognizing individuals with exceptional and distinctive personalities and looks. Michael Tagudiña of JD 2D was awarded Mr. Sui Generis, and Maviyah Lee Debarbo of JD 1B was named Ms. Sui Generis, celebrating the individuality and unique spirit within the College of Law.
