CITY GOV'T ISSUES HEALTH ADVISORY AMID KANLAON UNREST
Mt. Kanlaon, an active volcano in Negros Island, erupted on Monday night, June 3, producing a 5,000-meter plume, according to Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-Phivolcs) in a report.
PHIVOLCS raised Kanlaon's alert level from Alert Level 1 (abnormal) to Alert Level 2 (increasing unrest), which means βthere is current unrest driven by shallow magmatic processes that could eventually lead to further explosive eruptions or even precede hazardous magmatic eruptions.β
Although far from the area of the steam-driven eruption, the Iloilo City Government raised a health advisory on the adverse effects of the coarse ashfall and sulfurous odors.
PHIVOLCS said that they have not recorded any ash fall that has reached the city, and the eruption will not cause any danger to the residents.
In a press conference held on June 4, the City Health Office, headed by Dr. Anabelle Tang, emphasized the importance of wearing face masks and being aware of the respiratory problems related to volcanic eruptions.
City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO), headed by Donna Magno, said that they are planning to conduct air quality testing to monitor environmental conditions and determine the level of sulfur dioxide in the air.
However, proper consultation is considered first with the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAG-ASA) to check what equipment should be used before implementing such test.
Both offices said that they will update the public as soon as information has been gathered regarding the air condition of the city after consultation with the agencies.
