GUSTHINK: OPINIONS THAT MATTER

It takes a brave stand-out to side with the silenced, to objectively oppose the self-serving, and to influence the opinion of the general public.

Living in a fast-paced world, issues rapidly rise to consume the diverse perspective of the mass, prompting debates and dialogues from the educated and the ignorant. But one thing remains silent: the voices of the overlooked.

Introducing ‘GusThink,’ a new USA Publications segment featuring relevant, fact-based editorials and columns on campus and community issues.

Help improve our campus. What issue should the university address?

This is a platform of upholding integrity.
This is our voice.

DPWH STARTS P77M JALANDONI FLYOVER REHABILITATION

IN PHOTOS: Rehabilitation works on the P77-million Jalandoni Flyover, located in front of the University of San Agustin in Iloilo City, began on Sept. 24, following reports of potholes, loose bolts, and structural shaking that raised safety concerns.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region 6 is funding the project, which includes asphalt overlay, expansion joint repairs, and non-skid road surfacing.

Moreover, the Iloilo City Traffic and Transport Management Office (ICTTMO) warns of traffic congestion as the flyover operates on a half-lane scheme, prioritizing inbound vehicles in the morning and outbound by mid-afternoon.

The project is slated for completion on January 9, 2026, though city officials have appealed to expedite the works by December 2025. | via Hellie Jhann Tanio

'RIGHT TIME TO HAVE PERFORMANCE ARTS HERE IN ILOILO’ 🎭🇵🇭

The 10th Solidarity in Performance Arts (SIPA) International Festival, themed “Subong Ang Tiun,” concluded its weeklong run with a finale performance at the Iloilo Museum of Contemporary Art (ILOMOCA) on Wednesday, Sept. 24.

Artists from the Philippines and across Asia showcased their skills and experiences in Iloilo City through performances that reflected identity, culture, and tradition, while also offering contemporary interpretations to the audience.

“'Subong Ang Tiun’—it is the right time to have performance arts here in Iloilo, and for noted performance artists all over Asia to come here and make people aware of performance art,” said Maricel Montero, consultant program director of the ILOMOCA.

Now in its 10th year, SIPA celebrates the importance of time, honoring heritage and collaboration, with organizers describing the event as a cultural exchange of local and international voices. | via Ashley Joy Gayas

FEAST OF ST. PADRE PIO

September 23 marks an important day for Catholics across the world as they honor St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, an Italian Franciscan priest who was a humble servant of God and whose life was marked by prayer and sacrifices.

As the patron saint of civil defense volunteers, adolescents, and those who are consumed by stress, Padre Pio devoted his life to a mission of helping and comforting the suffering and guiding them to be closer in faith to Christ.

As we celebrate his feast day, may we be reminded of his personal mission to serve others with humility and kindness. via | Lorenz Jude Celoso

INT’L DAY OF SIGN LANGUAGES

Each year on September 23, the world marks the International Day of Sign Languages, showing its role in communication, respect, unity, awareness, equality, and understanding worldwide.

Sign language is more than simple hand movements, it is a full language carrying culture, identity, and proving communication belongs to everyone, strengthening connection and inclusivity.

Through this celebration, we show the value of fairness and inclusion, encouraging communities to respect diversity, protect rights, and understand one another with kindness, compassion, and cooperation. | via Eden Margareth Mallorca
