𝐑𝐄𝐂𝐀𝐏 | COD holds college orientation, names new slate of PTA officers

The WVSU College of Dentistry officially welcomed its students, parents, and faculty to Academic Year 2025-2026 through an orientation program at the COD Quadrangle yesterday, August 8.

Dr. Celina C. Gellada, Vice President for Medical & Allied Sciences, and Dr. Ma. Asuncion Christine V. Dequilla, Vice President for Academic Affairs commenced the event with their inspiring messages. The opening remarks by Dean Dr. Liza Assumpta Jover followed, in which she congratulated the freshmen and encouraged all students to embrace the challenges and opportunities of the coming year with dedication and resilience.

The main highlight of the orientation was Dr. Glorieaster Sabando’s detailed presentation of the Student Handbook and COD Bulletin of Information, ensuring students are well-guided in their academic journey. She emphasized key academic policies, including attendance requirements, grading systems, and clinical performance standards.

Mr. Gladwyn Gustilo of the International and Local Linkages Office also discussed the WVSU Internationalization (IZN) Framework and various global opportunities for students such as the Exchange and Mobility Program, language courses in Spanish and French, and internship programs abroad, broadening the horizons of future dental professionals.

On the other hand, a milestone moment unfolded as the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) held its first election and oath-taking of officers, concluding with Dr. George N. Sibonga, who is also a University Dentist, being elected and sworn to office as the PTA President.

On separate sessions after the orientation, Atty. Ryan Castro led the Return of Service Orientation for the freshmen and their parents, while Dr. Lester Joseph Cardenas facilitated the Clinician’s Orientation for the pioneering batch—the fifth year students—with their guardians as well.

The day’s events not only prepared students for the year ahead but also set a collaborative spirit that will carry through the halls of COD in the months to come.

𝐍𝐄𝐖𝐒 𝐔𝐏𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐄 | The College of Dentistry Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) opened the academic year with its general meeting, gathering parents, faculty, and students for the annual orientation at the COD Building today, August 8.

This set the tone for the election of new PTA officers for the academic year 2025-2026, where a slate of qualified and nominated candidates were presented.

The following newly elected officers are expected to assume their duties in guiding the PTA’s efforts in the coming year:

𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐄𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐍𝐎𝐖 | The College of Dentistry opened this year’s orientation with warm smiles lighting up its halls, welcoming students, parents, faculty, and staff for a fresh academic year rooted in knowledge and excellence at the COD Building, West Visayas State University, today.

Moreover, the event also marks the college’s first-ever Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) meeting, bringing families and the academic community together for a stronger collaboration and support in shaping future dentists toward success.

𝐖𝐕𝐒𝐔 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐤𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐬 𝐨𝐟𝐟 𝐀𝐘 '𝟐𝟓-'𝟐𝟔

ILOILO CITY—Classes for Academic Year 2025–2026 have officially commenced on all levels, following the calendar of West Visayas State University.

For the College of Dentistry, 40 new students are enrolled, raising the college's population to 207 for the school year.

To mark the beginning of both the school year and ASEAN Month, the day kicked off with a flag ceremony that paid tribute to the eleven ASEAN countries, with faculty and several students dressed in attires inspired by specific nations.

The student-led organizations from COD, such as the Student Council, Pagyuhum Publication, and the Philippine Dental Students Association–WVSU Chapter, set up booths in the college building to welcome both freshmen and continuing students, also launching their recruitment for new members.

On Friday, Aug. 8, the COD is set to conduct its Freshmen and College Orientation.

In celebration of the university’s 123rd Founding Anniversary, West Visayas State University, in collaboration with the Philippine Dental Association (PDA) - Iloilo Chapter, successfully conducted its community dental outreach program, catering to 99 residents of Brgy. Magsaysay, La Paz, last June 11, at the College of Dentistry building.

The Philippine Dental Students Association (PDSA) led the registration and provided dental education to the recipients. The College of Nursing faculty and the Nursing Student Council supervised the pre-assessment of patients’ vital signs before undergoing dental check-ups, oral prophylaxis, and tooth extraction, rendered by the College of Dentistry faculty and PDA, and assisted by the COD Clinician’s Club.

The College of Medicine also provided free medical consultations, laboratory tests, and distributed medicines to patient beneficiaries at the COM-Annex Building. The simultaneous medical-dental mission was spearheaded by the WVSU Administration as part of the foundation day celebration.

𝐍𝐄𝐖𝐒 𝐔𝐏𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐄:

West Visayas State University (WVSU), in collaboration with Philippine Dental Association-Iloilo Chapter, will hold a Community Dental Outreach on June 11, 2025, 8:00 AM - 2:00 PM, at the WVSU-College of Dentistry Building.

Services such as dental check up, oral prophylaxis (cleaning), tooth extraction (gabot), and dental education will be offered to 100 residents of Brgy. Magsaysay, La paz, Iloilo City.

This event is part of the official commemoration of the university's 123rd Foundation Anniversary.
