Happy birthday to our literary writer, John David!

Every time John David walks into a room, his presence in unmistakable. You will never catch him in a wrinkled uniform or with tarnished paraphernalias, and we admire him for that.

Yet beneath his well-ironed clothes and shining pins is a John David who's fun and talkative, and we never saw it coming. He may seem silent at firstβ€”but talk to him about anything, our literary writer will always have some story to share.

Another thing we also love about John is his talent in photography. He has a keen eye for capturing moments from various angles, and he does it remarkably fast. Spend time with him and you'll be surprised he has posted two events while you're still sorting through your shots.

Beyond his talents, John David is also someone to rely on. He accepts work without further reluctance, he’s the one to go to whenever schedules may seem hectic and tasks start to pile up.

Happy birthday again, John David. Have a rest, and may your day be filled with joy!

In laughter and in mischief,

There comes a moment in many people’s lives when they stand at the crossroads between who the world expects them to be and who they truly are.

For some, that moment arrives early. For others, it takes years of questioning and unlearning fear. Yet regardless of when it happens, the journey toward becoming your authentic self is one of the bravest paths anyone can take.

This Pride Month, we celebrate people, colors, flags, stories, courage, and authenticity.

We celebrate those who proudly wave rainbow flags in public spaces and boldly share their truths with the world. We celebrate those who march, advocate, and use their voices to create visibility for others.

But we also celebrate those whose Pride exists quietly.

The individual who is still finding the words to describe who they are. The student and friend who express themselves through small acts of self-love. The sibling or colleague who may not yet feel safe enough to live openly but chooses every day to remain true to themselves despite the challenges they face.

Pride is not measured by how visible you are.

It is found in the courage to keep moving forward and in the decision to embrace yourself, even when the path is difficult.

Becoming who you were meant to be is not always easy. Sometimes it means confronting rejection. Sometimes it means carrying the weight of misunderstanding. Sometimes it means choosing yourself in a world that constantly asks you to fit into boxes that were never designed for you.

Yet history has shown us that progress begins when people dare to exist as themselves.

This month is a call to action for everyone.

A call to listen before judging.

A call to respect identities different from our own.

A call to challenge prejudice when we encounter it.

A call to create spaces where diversity is genuinely valued.

A call to choose compassion over assumptions and understanding over fear.

Just as we look for the end of a rainbow, may we continue building a future where no one has to hide who they are, and where every person is given the chance to become exactly who they were meant to be.

Lakes, Lanes, and Diplomatic Gains: JBLFMU‑Molo Strengthens Global Citizenship through its Shanghai‑Hangzhou Visit

Eighteen faculty and staff from John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University, Molo returned this week from a weeklong cross border mobility program in Hangzhou and Shanghai, China, where they combined cultural immersion, professional exchange, and frontline diplomacy to deepen the university’s internationalization efforts.

The delegation, composed of teaching and non teaching personnel, traveled from May 21 to 26, 2026, as a support to JBLFMU Molo’s ongoing drive to strengthen global citizenship education, internationalization and institutional partnerships.

Their itinerary moved from the scenic and historic to the modern and metropolitan, offering participants a wide lens on China’s past and present.

In Hangzhou, the group visited the legendary West Lake, traversing lakeside paths and taking in vistas that have inspired poets and painters for centuries. They toured Lingyin Temple, an ancient Buddhist site whose tranquil courtyards and carved grottoes provided a quiet counterpoint to the bustle of modern life. At Meiwu Tea Garden, participants observed the garden’s layout and tea cultivation features, gaining visual insight into the region’s tea heritage.

The mood shifted from contemplative to playful when the delegation spent a day at Shanghai Disneyland, where colleagues traded lecture halls for attractions and informal conversations replaced formal agenda. The visit offered a reminder that cross border learning can be both educational and humanizing; shared laughters and downtime build the personal connections that underpin long term collaboration.

Back in central Shanghai, the group encountered the city’s architectural and commercial contrasts. They admired the European influenced facades of the Bund, strolled the busy Nanjing Road Walkway, and capped one evening with a river cruise that showcased Shanghai’s skyline, with gleaming towers and historic buildings reflected in the Huangpu River. These scenes prompted reflection on how cities compress histories of trade, empire, and modern development into walkable districts.

On the program’s final official day, the group met with representatives of the Philippine Consulate General in Shanghai and was received by Ms Jeannie Petrola, Cultural Officer and PCGS Consular Assistant. Consul John Francis Herrera described the consulate’s role in fostering diplomatic ties through people to people exchanges in tourism, commerce, and employment during his special lecture and question and answer segment. He emphasized the office’s responsibility to protect Filipinos working or traveling in China and outlined practical pathways the consulate uses to support and connect nationals abroad.

Consulate General Myca Magnolia Fischer warmly invited JBLFMU Molo students to consider educational visits to the consulate and offered to provide pre departure orientation seminars on Chinese culture, an offer that signals a willingness to turn a single mobility trip into a recurring educational partnership.

The delegation also toured Shanghai neighborhoods including Wukang Road, Huaihai Road, and Xintiandi Shikumen, observing how heritage architecture has been adapted for contemporary urban life.

Beyond the itinerary, participants returned with practical takeaways: new ideas for curricular internationalization, stronger ties for future exchanges, and concrete offers of support from a diplomatic mission. For an institution that serves a maritime and global workforce, such firsthand exposure to another country’s cultural rhythms, governance structures, and urban economies is more than a study tour, it is an investment in capacity.

The trip’s most important lesson arrived quietly, in conversations on a river cruise and while observing gardens and streets framed by unfamiliar skylines, internationalization is a people project. Policies and partnerships open doors, but lasting global collaboration grows from human connection, shared observations, mutual curiosity, and the willingness to meet across borders.

As JBLFMU Molo returns to Iloilo, the school brings back not only memories and photographs, but relationships and invitations that can be turned into student opportunities, staff development, and sustained civic ties, proof that mobility programs do more than broaden horizons, they make those horizons actionable.

𝐍𝐄𝐖𝐒 | JBLFMU-Molo faculty joins UNESCO-APCEIU GCED training workshop in South Korea

Dr. Louise May Lim, International Relations Coordinator of John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University-Molo, participated in the five-day training workshop on Global Citizenship Education (GCED) during the 25th Asia-Pacific Training Workshop (APTW) held in Seoul and Gangwon, South Korea from April 27 to May 1.

The workshop gathered alumni and new participants to discuss the role of GCED in promoting peace, coexistence, and intercultural understanding.

Participants reflected on how GCED can address conflict and division by encouraging openness, empathy, and shared responsibility among individuals and communities.

The activity echoed UNESCO’s principle that peace must be built in the minds and hearts of people, emphasizing the importance of education in fostering global awareness and mutual understanding.

Lim was among only two delegates from the Philippines who participated in the workshop. As an alumna of the Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding (APCEIU), her participation was once again subsidized by UNESCO-APCEIU, a UNESCO-affiliated institution that promotes Global Citizenship Education and Education for International Understanding across the Asia-Pacific region.

Her participation reinforced JBLFMU-Molo’s continued engagement in international exchange programs and initiatives related to Global Citizenship Education.

Happy birthday to our dearest publication adviser, Ma’am Louise!

Whenever the publication feels down and confused, ma’am Louise enlightens us with an energy that could brighten anyone’s day. Her presence has become our own source of encouragement and reassurance, especially during moments when deadlines and pressure overwhelm the office.

She constantly encourages us to pursue opportunities beyond the school. Whether it be competitions, workshops, seminars, or even digital certificates, she never fails to remind us that every achievement matters. Because of her guidance, many of us have learned to believe more in our own potential.

One thing we all love about ma’am Louise is that once she becomes part of an organization, she never leaves their side. Through any challenge, she continues to stand firmly beside us, while still teaching us valuable lessons along the way. She makes The Seagull feel like a family rather than an organization.

Many more countries are waiting for you, ma’am Louise. May you continue to lead The Seagull with wisdom, compassion, and the same bright spirit that inspires all of us every day.

With fondness and folly,
Your Pubmilia
