The 18-year-old man who shot his 15-year-old ex-girlfriend inside Sta. Rosa Integrated School in Nueva Ecija on August 7 has died, police confirmed.

Authorities said the suspect passed away more than 24 hours after the shooting.

Both the suspect and the victim were first brought to the Doctors Hospital in Cabanatuan City. The suspect was later transferred to Paulino Garcia Memorial Medical Center and placed on life support. His family eventually decided to bring him home, where he later died.

According to Sta. Rosa police, the suspect entered the school around 10 a.m. and tried to convince the victim to leave her classroom. When she refused, he went inside, shot her, and then turned the gun on himself.

“According sa guard, noong una pinigil niya, napigilan naman, then hinintay niya maglabasan ang mga estudyante. Sinabayan niya, di na na-notice ng guard na naka-post doon,” P/Maj. Willard Lumawig Dulnuan, Sta. Rosa police chief, said.

School watchmen said they verify whether those entering the campus are students or staff but do not conduct body searches.

“Watchmen lang kami, kung licensed na guwardiya kami, baka puwede kami magkapkap…,” Leo, a school watchman, said.

Police recovered a .22-caliber snub-nose revolver from the scene.

The Department of Education in Nueva Ecija condemned the attack, saying violence has no place in schools.

Sta. Rosa Integrated School is temporarily closed. Students who witnessed the incident are receiving trauma support, while police are working with DepEd to conduct stress debriefings for both students and teachers.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said the government is looking into other possible measures to address issues related to online gambling before deciding on a total ban.

Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, India, on Friday, August 8, at the end of his state visit, Marcos stressed the need to assess all aspects of online gambling, including its social cost, to craft an effective policy.

The President said he has formed a review committee composed of stakeholders from various sectors to help find a “good answer” to the issue.

“Internally, we are calling it a conclave to put all of the interested parties such as CBCP has been very vocal on their position so they must be heard then we have to hear about from experts on addiction. We have to hear from parents and from teachers as to what the effects are on children. We have to hear from the police what are the effects in terms of criminality,” Marcos said.

“But in my opinion, ban will not take care of the problem. We have to be a little bit more measured in our response,” he added.

Citing the case of online sabong or “e-sabong,” Marcos questioned the effectiveness of imposing an outright ban.

“Ang nagiging sigaw lagi, ban this, ban, ban, ban. Ganito. Example lang. Ano ang nangyari sa e-sabong? Tingnan natin. Natigil ba? Magkano ang pusta sa e-sabong? 50 centimos. So, lahat talaga nadadamay. So, let's use that as an example. Successful ba 'yung pag-ban natin sa e-sabong?,” he said.

The President stressed the importance of addressing the root cause rather than targeting the entire online gambling industry.

“What is the problem? Is the problem, online gambling? Or is the problem naa-addict ang mga tao? Nadadamay at natuturuan na magsugal? That's the problem. So let's solve that problem,” Marcos said.

“If it comes down to a ban, then we will ban. But if there are better solutions than a ban, we will take those on,” he added.

Sangguniang Bayan (SB) member Mihrel Senatin cited Ibajay Vice Mayor Julio Estolloso’s alleged “different treatment” toward him as the motive for shooting the vice mayor inside the SB office on Friday morning, August 8, according to the police’s initial investigation.

Ibajay Municipal Police Station chief PMaj. Rajiv Salvino said Senatin told investigators, “Iba ang pakikitungo ni vice sa akin” (“The vice mayor treats me differently”) when asked about his motive for killing the vice mayor.

Police did not elaborate on the kind of “different treatment” Senatin allegedly experienced from Estolloso.

“Nag-match up po na meron siyang dinidibdib or sama ng loob sa vice mayor,” Salvino said.

Police earlier reported that Senatin approached Estolloso and asked in Akeanon, “Vice, anu ang saea kimu?” (“Vice, what’s your issue with me?”) before pulling out a firearm and shooting him multiple times.

Senatin is now in the custody of the Aklan Provincial Police Office for a paraffin test and ballistic examination on the recovered 9mm G***k 17 pistol. Records show he is a licensed gun owner. | Rjay Zuriaga Castor
