The 18-year-old man who shot his 15-year-old ex-girlfriend inside Sta. Rosa Integrated School in Nueva Ecija on August 7 has died, police confirmed.
Authorities said the suspect passed away more than 24 hours after the shooting.
Both the suspect and the victim were first brought to the Doctors Hospital in Cabanatuan City. The suspect was later transferred to Paulino Garcia Memorial Medical Center and placed on life support. His family eventually decided to bring him home, where he later died.
According to Sta. Rosa police, the suspect entered the school around 10 a.m. and tried to convince the victim to leave her classroom. When she refused, he went inside, shot her, and then turned the gun on himself.
“According sa guard, noong una pinigil niya, napigilan naman, then hinintay niya maglabasan ang mga estudyante. Sinabayan niya, di na na-notice ng guard na naka-post doon,” P/Maj. Willard Lumawig Dulnuan, Sta. Rosa police chief, said.
School watchmen said they verify whether those entering the campus are students or staff but do not conduct body searches.
“Watchmen lang kami, kung licensed na guwardiya kami, baka puwede kami magkapkap…,” Leo, a school watchman, said.
Police recovered a .22-caliber snub-nose revolver from the scene.
The Department of Education in Nueva Ecija condemned the attack, saying violence has no place in schools.
Sta. Rosa Integrated School is temporarily closed. Students who witnessed the incident are receiving trauma support, while police are working with DepEd to conduct stress debriefings for both students and teachers.
