Showcasing excellence and camaraderie through sportsmanship, athletes and delegates from the West Visayas State Universityโ€“College of Education (WVSU-COE) gathered in a spirited display of unity during PAGHANAS: Intercollege Hinampang 2025 held on Oct. 22โ€“24.

With the theme โ€œSharpening the Self, Strengthening the Circle,โ€ the annual event brought together students from different colleges and year levels across the university to compete in various sports and traditional gamesโ€”celebrating not only strength and skill, but also friendship and unity.

โ€œIt was all worth it,โ€ said John Michael Eugalca, coordinating officer of the COE. โ€œDespite the little preparation we had, we still managed to raise the banner of the College of Education high during the Intercollege Hinampang. Iโ€™m very grateful to our student-athletes who wholeheartedly shared their talents and skills to represent the college.โ€

COE athletes secured first place in Laro ng Lahi, a series of traditional games such as Sack Race, Sangkayaw, Chinese Garter, Luksong Lubid, and Tug-of-War, earning a total of 66 points, beating other participating colleges.

For Jhun Alrei F. De la Rosa, one of the Laro ng Lahi participants, the Hinampang experience went beyond competitionโ€”it was a celebration of teamwork, growth, and joy.

โ€œThe idea of winning was beyond our expectations, and we were so happy about the achievement,โ€ De la Rosa said. โ€œThere were several challenges during the gameโ€”especially the unexpected rain and pressureโ€”but all the fear washed away through the cheers from our fellow educators and the trust we had in one another.โ€

Students also showed their support from the sidelines, cheering for their fellow Taga-Ed athletes and representatives, embodying the true spirit of Hinampang.

โ€œAs a first-year student, this yearโ€™s Hinampang was really thrilling and motivating,โ€ shared Kyla Orbina, a Bachelor of Special Needs Education student majoring in Elementary School Teaching. โ€œWhat made the event special was not just the competition, but how it brought everyone together to celebrate passion, teamwork, and friendship.โ€

WVSU-COE won the following:

Laro ng Lahi
1st Place

Athletics (100m Dash)
2nd Place | Jolyne Tagacay

Chess (Menโ€™s Category)
2nd Place

ESports (Mobile Legends: Bang Bang)
2nd Place

Volleyball (Womenโ€™s Category)
2nd Place

Athletics (400m Dash)
3rd Place | Jolyne Tagacay

Basketball (Womenโ€™s Category)
3rd Place

Volleyball (Menโ€™s Category)
3rd Place

This yearโ€™s Intercollege Hinampang concluded with more than just medals and rankingsโ€”it ended with strengthened bonds, lasting memories, and a renewed sense of Taga-Ed unity

Every roar from the crowd, every cheer echoing across the court, and every medal raised high tell only half the story of this yearโ€™s Intercollege Hinampang. The other half belongs to those who stayed long after the games ended, whose names may never grace a scoreboard, yet whose dedication kept the spirit of the event alive.

The measure of Hinampangโ€™s success goes beyond the many wins and scores of each college. It lies in the tireless coordination and the unyielding service that defined each dayโ€”the collective effort of student councils, marshals, medics, referees, and media teams who transformed an athletic event into a living portrait of what it means to be a true Taga-West.

Behind the event were council officers finalizing logistics and preparations until dusk, committee heads balancing deadlines with academic demands, faculty advisers providing guidance and support, and marshals maintaining peace and order. Medics stood ready at every injury, while coaches remained steadfast at the sidelines, believing in their athletes long before the first whistle blew. Referees and linesmen upheld fairness in every match, and student publications captured stories that gave meaning to every point scored. Beyond the campus, parents silently extended their help. Some cheering from the bleachers, others providing the financial support that allowed their children to compete. Often unseen, these acts of service revealed the endurance and empathy that define true leadership and community.

Some may argue that student-athletes should rightfully remain at the heart of Hinampang. That the event was created to celebrate their discipline and skill. After all, sports have always been a tribute to physical excellence and the competitive spirit that drives every player to give their all.

Yet to isolate the athletes from those who made their victories possible is to overlook the very essence of community. The roar of the crowd means little without those who prepared the stage. It is the harmony of both the players and the people behind them that gives the event its soul. For the true spirit of Hinampang is collective, not individual.

Without the organizers, there would be no schedules.
Without the coaches, no direction.
Without the medics, no safety.
Without the referees, no fairness.
Without the parents, no foundation.
Without the media, no story to tell.

The athletes may be the stars, but every star shines brighter because others chose to hold the light steady.

This year's Intercollege Hinampang stands as a triumph not only of sportsmanship but of solidarity, reminding us that success is never a one-person show. To every organizer, referee, medic, council, coach, faculty member, parent, and media staffer who gave their allโ€”know that you are the unsung pulse that kept this yearโ€™s Hinampang alive. You may not have worn jerseys or stood beneath the spotlight, but you carried something far greaterโ€”the soul of this celebration. For without you, there would be no game to begin with.

Equipping young writers with creativity and confidence, the English Majorsโ€™ Organization (EMO) of West Visayas State University held a poetry writing workshop titled โ€œEMO EXP: Project PenPower Phase 1โ€ at Mandurriao National High School on Oct. 24.

Student journalists from MNHS participated in the event which featured a lecture and joined interactive writing sessions led by two-time Palanca awardee Al Jeffrey L. Gonzales.

โ€œAll stories have been written. I would agree, but there are stories that have not been told in your voice. What matters here, right now, is your voiceโ€”how you would tell that particular story from your voice,โ€ said Gonzales.

The workshop featured two contest categories: individual writing for English and collaborative writing for Filipino. Participants applied the insights from the lecture while working on their original pieces during the session.

โ€œI grew up thinking that poetry was all about rhymes and this morning, my perspective's changed very much, and it has ascended from simple rhymes to something of a personal experience because with such little lines, you could tell so much about yourself,โ€ said Prince RJ Delgado, a participant from a student publicationโ€”The MNHS Spectrum.

The program concluded with the awarding of winners and a teaser for next phase of EMO EXP: Project PenPower, which aims to continue EMOโ€™s advocacy of nurturing literary expression and creativity among young writers.

To bridge the gap for students facing uncertainty about their senior high school (SHS) strand choice, third-year Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSEd) major in Values Education students hosted a half-day career guidance session titled โ€œReady, Set, Succeed: Choose Your Path, Unlock Your Futureโ€ on Oct. 24, 2025, at the West Visayas State University (WVSU) Library Reference Room.

The session served as a culminating academic requirement for the course VED 215: Career Development and Work Values, under the supervision of Prof. Hilda C. Montaรฑo.

The project aimed to empower Grade 10 learners from the WVSU Integrated Laboratory School (WVSUโ€“ILS) to make informed decisions aligned with their personal aspirations and potential as they transition to a higher level of education.

โ€œThis [activity] is a way to introduce them to the senior high school tracks and strands, since choosing their most favored and preferred track or strand can also help them in deciding on the college degree they will later take,โ€ said Montaรฑo, facilitator of VED 215.

The core of the session featured a comprehensive discussion of the academic trackโ€”which includes Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM); Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS); General Academic Strand (GAS); and Accountancy and Business Management (ABM)โ€”as well as the Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL) track, the Sports Track, and the Arts and Design Track.

Each presentation outlined the specific subjects and potential career pathways for its strand, directly supporting the eventโ€™s goal of helping participants align their personal strengths with their educational journey.

โ€œI am confident that HUMSS is the right fit for my career since Iโ€™m becoming a lawyer. Iโ€™m very social, enjoy public speaking, and explore leadership. I want to be a human and political rights lawyer to defend the innocent, be the voice of the voiceless, and give justice to the oppressed. My goal is to help people and advocate against injustices,โ€ said Paulyn Joy Sandoval, a Grade 10 student attendee, as she shared how the activity inspired her to pursue her chosen SHS track.

Following the discussions, participants took part in an interactive activity called the Dream Career Wall, where they posted their chosen future careers on a wall prepared by the event facilitators.

โ€œThis event prepares us for our career endeavors as it helps us guide students in choosing their paths, aligning with our goals in Values Education. It also trains us to speak confidently, improve communication skills, and motivate others. Even as a course requirement, itโ€™s a great initiative for Grade 10 students as preparation for senior high school,โ€ said Marc Gregori, event chairperson, emphasizing how the experience benefits both the student attendees and the future Values educators.

The activity also serves as preparation for next school yearโ€™s Strengthened Senior High School Curriculum (SSHSC), which the Department of Education will pilot in selected schools nationwide, including Iloilo National High School, highlighting five new core subject preparations.
