Epipremnum aureum “ Shangri- La pothos or Sleeping pothos”
The Shangri-La Pothos (Epipremnum aureum 'Shangri-La') is a rare, distinctive pothos variety known for its heavily crinkled, curled, and twisted leaves that do not fully open, earning it the nicknames "Sleeping Pothos" or "Spinach Pothos". While it originates from a Golden Pothos, the Shangri-La variety typically features darker, crinkled foliage, with some plants exhibiting variegation of cream and gold, though this can be less pronounced than other variegated pothos. Proper care, including bright, indirect light and well-draining soil, is essential to maintain its unique appearance and support any variegation.
Key Characteristics
Crinkled & Twisted Leaves:
The most distinctive feature is the "sleeping," unopened, and often curled/crinkled leaves.
Variegation:
While all Shangri-La are derived from a Golden Pothos, true variegated versions have splashes of cream and gold, though this can be subtle.
Upright Growth:
The plant has a tendency to grow more compactly and can be trained to climb or allowed to spill over a pot.
Care Tips
Light:
Provide bright, indirect light to enhance the leaves' variegation, but avoid direct sun, which can burn the leaves.
Watering:
Water thoroughly when the top 2–3 cm of soil is dry to prevent soggy soil, which can cause yellowing.
Humidity:
It appreciates moderate to high humidity, so occasional misting or grouping plants can be beneficial.
Soil:
Use a well-draining, nutrient-rich potting mix, ideally with perlite, to prevent overwatering.
Fertilizing:
Feed with a diluted liquid fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
Why it's Unique
"Sleeping" Nature:
The leaves remain partially closed and crumpled, giving the plant a unique, almost sculptural appearance.
Appearance:
Some find the crinkled leaves look like steamed spinach, while others admire its unique tropical texture and dramatic appeal.
