Fierce duels loom as IIT Finals unwraps at Summit Point

LIPA, Batangas – La Salle-1’s Julia Lua and Ateneo-2’s Shane Tan are poised to ignite one of Philippine sports’ most storied rivalries – this time, not on the hardwood but on the fairways – as the ICTSI Intercollegiate Tour fires off Tuesday, Sept. 23, at the Summit Point Golf and Country Club here.
Both leg winners – Lua reigning at Royal Northwoods and Tan emerging triumphant at Pradera Verde – bring firepower, focus and a shared hunger to dominate in the opening round of the three-day Finals. Their showdown is tipped to be one of the tournament’s marquee matchups, a duel packed with sparks, tension and the weight of school pride.
Yet the battle for the women’s individual crown promises more than a two-player contest. Six of the country’s most talented collegiate golfers are likewise eyeing the top spot in the ladies’ division of this historic Tour co-developed by Pilipinas Golf Tournaments, Inc. and the Philippine Golf Foundation.
Among them is UP-1’s Addie Manhit, who has quietly assembled one of the most consistent campaigns this season, including a breakout victory at Caliraya Springs. She tees off at 7:30 a.m., paired with fellow contenders CSB-1’s Natasha Bantug, Ateneo-2’s Tatiana Ong, and La Salle-1’s Stacey Chua – each determined to play spoiler to the Lua-Tan headline act.
Meanwhile, Lua and Tan are set for an early 7:20 a.m. tee-off alongside two rising stars: UP-1’s Katrisse Datoc and CSB-1’s Olivia Bermudo.
In the men’s division, another explosive matchup looms between La Salle-1’s Zachary Castro and CSB-1’s Sean Granada, both leg winners in their own right. Castro, who topped the Pradera Verde leg, squares off with Granada, the surprise victor in stormy conditions at Splendido Taal. They are joined in the 8:20 a.m. flight by Ateneo-1’s Schmuel Tan and La Salle-2’s Lucas Aldeguer in a high-stakes grouping expected to shape the leaderboard early.
Team honors are also up for grabs in both the men’s and women’s divisions, further elevating the intensity of the Finals.
While the Lua-Tan duel is a highlight in its own right, it also carries the added drama of an enduring institutional rivalry that has defined Philippine collegiate sports for decades. La Salle vs. Ateneo is synonymous with fever-pitch basketball games and packed arenas – but with golf emerging as a new battleground, that same competitive spirit is migrating to the greens.
Marking a long-overdue milestone in Philippine golf, the IIT signals a bold new era for the sport at the university level. For years, golf lagged behind other disciplines in terms of structure and developmental support. This Tour not only bridges that gap but also establishes a platform for young talents to thrive.
Had a structured collegiate golf program been established earlier, the country might already have a stronger pool of homegrown talents competing at the professional and international levels. Many promising junior players simply faded from the scene, with no clear pathway from youth golf to the elite ranks.
Now, with support from ICTSI, this gap is finally being addressed. The IIT is not just a sporting event; it’s a visionary step toward creating a true ecosystem for student-athletes, where academic excellence, competitive development and career progression all coexist.
The IIT aims to elevate golf as a legitimate varsity sport, integrating World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points into the competition to offer players global exposure. More than just fighting for trophies, these student-athletes are now gaining international recognition and real opportunities to pursue scholarships or professional careers.
By investing in the sport’s future at the grassroots level, ICTSI has taken the lead in shaping the next generation of Filipino golfers – an initiative that should have been set in motion long ago.
But now that the wheels are turning, the promise is real. The IIT is not just rewriting the playbook – it’s finally writing the first chapter of what should have been a storied history in Philippine collegiate golf.

Summit showdown: Varsity golf breaks new ground at IIT Finals

The pursuit of bragging rights as the first-ever ICTSI Intercollegiate Tour (ITT) champion culminates in three days of high-stakes action beginning Tuesday, Sept. 23 at the Summit Point Golf and Country Club in Lipa City, Batangas.
More than just a final leg, this event is a historic milestone – ushering in a new era of organized collegiate golf in the country. It serves as a proving ground not only for individual brilliance but also for team unity and competitive maturity among the country’s most promising student-athletes.
Launched in June and co-developed by Pilipinas Golf Tournaments, Inc. and the Philippine Golf Foundation, the IIT was created with a bold vision: to elevate golf as a legitimate varsity sport, on par with basketball, volleyball and athletics in the collegiate scene.
Through structured, high-level competition and a development-driven approach, the Tour aims to create pathways for scholarships, professional careers and international exposure for young Filipino golfers.
By integrating World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points into the competition, the ITT is already aligning itself with global standards. This means players not only compete for national glory but also gain traction on the world stage – an unprecedented opportunity in the local golf scene.
Over the last two months, the Tour held four action-packed legs at premier courses including Royal Northwoods, Splendido Taal, Caliraya Springs, Pradera Verde, Beverly Place and Eastridge. These legs tested the mettle of collegiate golfers in varying conditions, from tight fairways to wind-swept greens – creating a truly well-rounded battlefield for the game’s rising stars.
The result: a finals field stacked with talent. On the men’s side, 14 top-performing golfers from leading universities and colleges earned their spot in the individual championship. Meanwhile, eight of the country’s leading collegiate women golfers will vie for supremacy in the ladies’ division.
In the team competition, seven schools in both divisions will clash under a three-to-play format, emphasizing not just individual skill but also team chemistry and strategic depth.
Among the standouts in the men’s individual competition are Sean Granada of College of St. Benilde-1, who won at Splendido Taal, and Zachary Castro of La Salle-1, the Pradera Verde leg champion. They will be challenged by a formidable field including Rans Balay-odao (University of the Cordilleras), Emilio Carpio (UP-1), Emilio Curran (Ateneo-1), and others from La Salle, Ateneo, UP and CSB.
On the women’s side, a three-way battle is expected among leg winners Julia Lua (La Salle-1), Addie Manhit (UP-1), and Shane Tan (Ateneo-2). But with equally capable challengers such as Katrisse Datoc (UP-1), Natasha Bantug (CSB-1), Stacey Chan (La Salle-1), and Tatiana Ong (Ateneo-2), fans can expect a tight and thrilling race to the finish.
A championship of this caliber deserves a course that demands precision, patience and power and Summit Point delivers exactly that. With its challenging layout and championship-caliber greens, it offers the perfect setting for a finale that promises drama from the first tee to the final putt.
Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., the par-72 course has replicated 18 renowned golf holes in the world, including holes from St. Andrews, Augusta National and Pebble Beach.
What sets the IIT apart is its long-term commitment to the growth of golf at the grassroots and collegiate levels. Beyond just trophies and titles, the tour is about building a sustainable ecosystem for young golfers – one that supports academic excellence, athletic development, and professional readiness.

Oro, Balangauan shine in Bacolod

BACOLOD – John Rey Oro rolled to a four-stroke victory despite a shaky finish, carding a two-over 72 to turn a tense duel with Mhark Fernando III into a dominant win in the boys’ 15-18 division of the ICTSI Bacolod Junior PGT Championship here on Saturday.
Displaying deep familiarity with the tricky Bacolod Golf and Country Club layout, Oro broke a front-nine deadlock with Fernando and seized full control with a decisive three-shot swing on the dog-leg par-4 No. 11, where he tapped in for birdie.
Tied with Oro after 36 holes, Fernando faltered at the back nine, starting with a double bogey on the 11th following an errant drive and a poor approach shot. He then dropped two more strokes on the next hole. From there, Oro took control, coasting to victory despite stumbling with three bogeys over the final four holes.
He closed out the 54-hole tournament with a total score of 218, eight over par.
In the girls’ 15-18 category, Cebu’s Tashanah Balangauan once again showcased her supremacy over Davao’s Precious Zaragosa, completing a 13-shot rout with a 70 for a 212.
Zaragosa, who closed out with a 73, settled for second at 225, while Breanna Rojas placed third with a 253 after a 77.
John Paul Oro, John Rey’s twin, capped his round with a clutch 20-foot birdie on the par-3 18th to card a 75 and edge Fernando for runner-up honors via countback at 222. Fernando closed with a 76 after bogeying the last two holes.
With the win, the Oro twins split top honors in the final two legs of the Visayas-Mindanao series – John Paul having ruled the Negros Occidental leg last Wednesday, where John Rey finished fifth.
"I felt a bit pressured in the last few holes, but I knew I had a big lead, so it was okay," said John Rey in Filipino, who highlighted his round with a 24-foot birdie putt on No. 5.
"My putting was solid, and my driving and chipping were also on point," he added.
Despite falling short of the title, Fernando secured a spot in the Elite Junior Finals with 30 points in the final rankings – where only a player’s top three results are counted. He joins Alexis Nailga and Luciano Copok as the Vis-Min representatives in the national finals, slated for Sept. 30–Oct. 3 at The Country Club in Laguna.
The North vs. South Finals is a unique Ryder Cup-style competition that pits the best from Luzon against the top performers from the Visayas and Mindanao series.
Unfortunately, the Oro twins missed the cut for the Finals, having played only two legs, one short of the minimum requirement. Still, their impressive victories were a significant confidence booster as they eye tougher competitions ahead.
The 18-year-old Oro expressed regret over falling short of the criteria to qualify for the Finals.
"It's really sad – we were just one tournament short," he said. "That's why we said we'd make up for it here in Bacolod. We're just so happy, my brother and I, that we won here."
In the girls’ division, Balangauan previously staged a comeback win over Zaragosa at the Marapara leg last Wednesday, overturning a two-shot deficit in the final round to win by two. This time, she took control from the opening round and never let up – shooting back-to-back 71s while Zaragosa carded twin 76s to fall behind by 10 after two rounds.
Balangauan, who also topped the Mactan leg, then cruised through the final round, focusing on sharpening her short game and putting under tournament conditions in preparation for the much-awaited finals.
“I’m truly grateful for this experience – it’s humbling, and even more special because I started my JPGT campaign with three straight victories,” said the 16-year-old Balangauan.
“I give all the glory to God for these blessings. This achievement isn’t mine alone; it’s also for everyone who has supported me along the way – my family and my support team,” she added.
John Rey Oro and Balangauan thus joined the roster of winners in the seventh and final leg of the Visayas-Mindanao series, alongside siblings Rafella and Ralph Batican (11-14), and rising stars Ana Marie Aguilar and Lucas Revilleza (7-10).
Rafella clinched the girls’ 11-14 crown to earn the last Finals berth in her category, while Ralph topped the boys’ 11-14 division to likewise advance.
Aguilar and Revilleza emerged as winners in the youngest age bracket, claiming titles in the girls’ and boys’ 7-10 categories, respectively.

NGAP launches new golf app

The National Golf Association of the Philippines introduced on Friday its latest mobile application called MyGolfNGAP in its effort to revamp its digital presence.

The MyGolfNGAP will be easy to use and will pack more features in the same concept and experience that we have with the popular FaceBook app.

The new app will make assist golf clubs' back-end usage as it would harness data in order to better cater to the services to members and clients, thus, improving operational efficiency for clubs.

Users would be able to upload scores, easily keep track of handicaps while engaging with friends and other players through the app's comment and conversation features.

"This would make the Philippine golfing community more engaged by providing more value to all individual WHS users," saud executive director Myka Romulo, who presented the new app in the presence of the NGAP Board and various representatives of the NGAP golf club members.

Aside from these, the NGAP would be able to work closely with its member clubs in order to make a more streamlined and united Philippine golfing ecosystem. Club announcements can be done through the app as well.
