“It is not a bad idea to be a late starter in a career.” This is the major lesson being shared by renowned Filipino tenor performer Lemuel Cuento. The 48-year-old international opera singer thinks that he may have been born with musical talent, but it had not manifested at an early age, unlike most of the typical musical prodigies we know.

‘Coming Home: Lemuel Cuento in Concert’ is a fund-raising performance for the benefit of the Youth Program on Agriculture, a program of the UPRHS to promote innovation in agriculture and nutrition, and in related fields to Grade11 students with the aim of convincing them to pursue careers that would address issues on hunger and food production in the country.

The benefit concert will be held on 26 February 2020, 7:00 PM at the D.L. Umali Auditorium, University of the Philippines, Los Baños.

Wilcon Depot, the Philippines’ leading home improvement and construction supply retailer, successfully conducted its sixth annual golf tournament at the Forest Hills Golf and Country Club, Antipolo City.

Over the past five years, the charity golf tournament has raised a generous amount of funds to assist its chosen charities. This year, Wilcon has decided to donate the raised funds to the communities affected by the Taal Volcano eruption. Majority of the proceeds from the tournament will fund Wilcon’s continuous relief missions to the provinces of Batangas, Cavite, and Laguna in assisting the thousands of displaced families.

The golf tournament is just one of the many initiatives of the company to give back to the society. The Wilcon Cup is also an extension program in promoting partnership, camaraderie, and giving thanks to their valued suppliers and industry partners.

“We are delighted to host the annual Wilcon Invitational Golf Cup as this event brings our valued suppliers and partners together for an exciting day of sportsmanship and fellowship. But aside from that, this year has been made extra meaningful as we decided to donate majority of the proceeds as a continuous effort of Wilcon to assist those communities affected by eruption of the Taal volcano. We are grateful for the generous contributions and for those who helped to make this big event a huge hit of success.” Wilcon SEVP and COO Rosemarie Ong said.

Sarah G.’s Secret to Decades of Success: Explore and Discover

As a child, it was obvious that Sarah had talent. She actively joined singing contests, and she was also one of the performers during Pope John Paul II’s visit to the Philippines in 1995—at age seven, no less. In the early years of her career, she established herself as a powerhouse singer, but she didn’t stop there. Instead, she pushed her boundaries, always exploring her box until it grew bigger and bigger. From having hit tracks, she then started doing small TV guestings until she finally crossed to lead roles and big-screen projects. Even with her music, Sarah was and is still very much experimental. Labeled as a pop artist for the good half of her career, she then flawlessly crossed to the dance and R&B genre with her later albums.

“In my case, I guess reinvention happened when I started listening to my own mind and body. I went after what really made me feel more passionate as an artist,” she shares.

And just like any great star with a good backstory, Sarah attributes her success as tracing back to her childhood. “My parents were very supportive of my dreams since day 1. They devoted their time to help me achieve our dreams. They were there with me and guided me every step of the way and for that I will forever be grateful. Kasama ko sila buong journey ko sa pagkamit ng aking pangarap [They were there with me throughout my whole journey of achieving my dreams].”

With her appetite for discovery and self-reinvention, Sarah, who is currently the brand endorser of Gardenia, is also the perfect role model to promote the Gardenia Pocket Sandwich, one of the lines of handy snacks of the leading brand marketed towards kids. The Gardenia Pocket Sandwich, which is made and sealed fresh every day, is the perfect merienda for children because of their lip-smacking taste and nutritional value. Busy moms who always stress over snack prep can use these freshly-packed treats as the perfect go-to baon for their little ones, too.

Gardenia Pocket Sandwich comes in flavors that appeal to the tastebuds of kids. There are Chocolate, Strawberry Pastillas and Cheese flavors as well as their latest two flavors in one sandwich variants -- White Chocolate and Blueberry and the other one, Raspberry and Peanut Butter. All are perfect for picky kids who love variety in their snacks. These yummy flavors are sandwiched between two soft creamy loaves of white bread that are fresh as they are filling.

More than its convenience, however, Gardenia promotes a sense of childhood discovery between parent and child—something Sarah is entirely on-board with.

The Gardenia Pocket Sandwich is available in all leading groceries nationwide for only PHP 12.00 SRP for single flavors and PHP 12.75 for double flavors. Visit Gardenia’s website at https://www.gardenia.com.ph or follow them on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/gardeniasnacktreats/) to keep updated on all their promos and products.

Bounty Fresh Spearheads Healthy Yet Fun Way To Celebrate Friendship, Family

A healthy yet fun way to celebrate friendship and family bonding every tenth month of the year is now also becoming a habit for Filipinos. It is called OctoberFresh.

Parents and their children participated in exciting events like the Star Hatchievers, which saw participants to showcasing their one-of-a-kind talents. Other exciting activities like special shows for kids were also held for Eggy’s first birthday party.

Bounty Fresh, the sole provider of chickens, is the perfect player to head the campaign. The brand produces blemish-free eggs and other breaded products that are strictly produced using only state-of-the-art, ISO-certified technology and processes.

This year, the brand made the event bigger with its campaign, a very cheeky—pun intended—digital series of films that followed the adventure of the brand’s ambassador Chicky. Chicky celebrated the first birthday of her egg “Eggy”.

With Chicky, who was first introduced last year, Bounty Fresh also brought in a new ambassador that made her new adventures much more interesting. Helping Chicky throw the perfect birthday party for Eggy was celebrity icon and mom Jolina Magdangal, one of the hosts of ABS-CBN's early morning show "Magandang Buhay".

OFWs get free livelihood training from PH embassy in Spain

The Philippine Embassy in Spain, through its Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO), recently sponsored a basic ham carving seminar for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) at the Asociación Cultural ACUMACE in Madrid.

“This livelihood training seminar is part of the embassy’s commitment to improve the employment opportunities of OFWs in Spain and to foster their entrepreneurial spirit through skills training,” said Philippe J. Lhuillier, Philippine ambassador to Spain.

The training is one of the benefits of being an active member of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, an agency of the Department of Labor and Employment of the Philippines assigned to protect the interests of OFWs and their families.

Michael Lopez Teves, the first Filipino master ham carver in Spain and currently a Master Carver in Cinco Jotas, one of Spain’s top tier brands of jamonIberico de bellota, introduced 29 OFWs to the art of jamón carving, a prestigious and lucrative career in the region.

Maestro Lopez demonstrated the proper way of jamón carving and guided participants in practicing the carving techniques. Prior to this, he also showed videos on how the jamoniberico de bellota is produced, and talked about how to distinguish between the various types of jamon.

Maestro Lopez has been working with Cinco Jotasfor more than 18 years. His brother, Mark, is also a master ham carver and owns Maestro Cortador Filipino (MCF), which provides jamon selection and carving services in Spain and in the Philippines.

Jamón or cured pork leg is one of Spain’s iconic dishes. It is produced all over the country and is considered a staple food in the Iberian Peninsula, earning an important position in every Spanish restaurant.

Andi’s Picks: The Stories Behind Her Favorite Hidden Gems In Singapore

There are plenty of fuss-free and family-friendly destinations that allow those bitten by the travel bug to indulge in their passion for adventure with their loved ones. For vlogger and radio host, Andi Manzano-Reyes, one of the top countries she visits with her husband GP, and her adorable daughters, Olivia and Amelia, is Singapore.

“We are in Singapore twice or three times a year. It’s vibrant, safe, and there are so many things to do and discover, and it’s kid-friendly. Your itinerary will be packed with just activities for the kids and everything is made convenient for us parents,” she shared.

Vast parks, pockets of amazing nature, bustling shopping districts, zoos, aquariums filled with diverse wildlife, and more - the city-state has everything for everyone with different stops and attractions that kids, kids-at-heart, and parents will love.
In a typical Manzano-Reyes family trip to Singapore, Andi shares that Olivia, Amelia, and herself enjoy a good trip to the beach, and refers to her little ones as ‘water babies’. But aside from this, they’ve got quite a lot of varied interests and hobbies to pack into their trips.

While the family may have plenty of shared hobbies which leads them shopping through Orchard Road or digging into the delicious eats in Hawker Centers, Andi also shares that parents should not forget to schedule in a little time for themselves to revel in something they’re passionate about.

For Andi, an avid shopper and collector, the best part of travelling has been finding pieces from local brands. As she transitioned into mommy-hood, she carried this same passion – this time looking for unique items and clothing for herself and her little girls.

Some of her top places to shop is Our Second Nature, Tanglin Mall, and The Editor’s Market. For her first stop, she relates that she enjoys visiting Our Second Nature because of its unique vibe and interiors, describing it as a place made for moms to shop and for kids to play. In terms of fashion, Our Second Nature features laid-back chic designs perfect for on-the-go moms like herself.

Another great destination to shop for her kids, Tanglin Mall also secures a place in Andi’s picks. The Tanglin Mall holds a special place in her heart because it is a one-stop leisure center that she has long-frequented. On their recent trip to Singapore, the family also visited Design Orchard, another lifestyle hub brimming with a wide array of options including a new favorite kid’s clothing brand – Chubby Chubby.

When she isn’t hauling some cute finds for her daughters, Andi also thinks of her family at home and visits The Editor’s Market for all her pasalubong needs. Introduced to her by her sisters, The Editor’s Market is a modern-day boutique for everyday fashion & lifestyle that offers an extensive collection of trendy pieces.

All said, Andi and her family’s trip to Singapore shows that the Lion City is not just a place where individuals can indulge in their unique interests but also a destination where families can exchange and share their passions with one another for an even more special and memorable adventure.

Watch as GP and Andi’s passion for dining meets Olivia and Amelia’s love for animals in their culinary adventures at go.gov.sg/reyesfaminsg-ep1. Catch their other passion-filled escapades on the Visit Singapore Philippines page.

Mental health cuts across populations from all walks of life and is an integral part of the entirety of health. The Philippines with the help of the country’s leading mental health advocates has already reached significant milestones including the passing of Republic Act 11036 otherwise known as the “Mental Health Act” along with the formulation of its Implementing Rules and Regulations. The law places special focus towards improving the mental health of the population in schools, workplaces and communities, underscoring the basic right of all Filipinos towards these services.

Consequently, the Philippine Council for Mental Health (PCMH) as mandated by law was organized. This Council, chaired by the Department of Health (DOH), serves as a policy-making advisory body to implement the Mental Health Act and spearheaded activities reflected in the newly developed Mental Health Strategic Plan. The plan serves as a blueprint towards a more responsive and compassionate health system that would effectively address mental, neurological, and substance use (MNS) disorders and other psychosocial issues. The activities provide a wide range of promotive, preventive, treatment and rehabilitative services aligned with the shift towards Universal Health Care (UHC).

As we celebrate the World Mental Health Day, the 3rd Public Health Convention on Mental Health will be conducted on October 10-11, 2019 to showcase major breakthroughs and accomplishments, relive success stories of different agencies, and gather various key stakeholders towards building a network of resources as we scale up mental health interventions in the country thus unifying efforts toward saving lives.

The 3rd Public Health Convention on Mental Health aims to showcase various mental health activities and accomplishments and present the Mental Health Strategic Plan created by the Philippine Council for Mental Health (PCMH) in hopes of raising awareness on the available services and linking resources to our service users.

The Public Health Convention on Mental Health specifically aims to showcase and inform stakeholders on:

Current efforts and future plans to scale up implementation.

Best practices from different agencies and partners

Networking platforms and commitments as reflected in the Mental Health Strategic Plan

Shakey’s Saves the Planet One Step at a Time

Shakey’s has partnered with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to promote the Movement.
Last August 8, 2019, a total of 131 volunteers from Shakey’s and WWF headed over to Las Pinas-Paranaque Critical Habitat and Ecotourism Area (LPPCHEA) for a Coastal Clean-up.

LPPCHEA is a nature reserve of mangroves, ponds, lagoons and a mixed beach forest, and it homes 41 migratory bird species from China, Japan and Siberia. But because it is beside Manila Bay, the islands in LPPCHEA have been a catch basin for trash from the surrounding bodies of water especially during the rainy season.

Shakey’s is taking big steps in raising awareness on the effects of plastic pollution, especially in the oceans. Reducing the consumption of single-use plastics is one of the initiatives that the organization is working on as it encourages everyone to “quit the sip.” Kicking the habit of using straws not only saves life in the oceans, because the reduced waste also benefits lives on land.

With eyes to the future, Shakey’s hopes that it will be more than just a store that provides great times and great memories. With its steps in helping the environment, Shakey’s also looks at sharing with the community a great planet.
