Success is not achieved overnight. Behind every championship title lies a story of sacrifice, perseverance, and unwavering determination. For Precious Khatleen Awa, 17 years old, hailing from San Juan, Iriga City, billiards was more than just a sportโ€”it became a journey that transformed her life and led her to make history.

The rhythmic sound of billiard balls and the quiet intensity of competition were never part of Preciousโ€™s original plans. Growing up, her interest in this sport did not exceed to pursue it as a competitive sport. As a student, her primary focus was on her studies and everyday school activities. What began as a simple hobby gradually developed into passion, with every shot she practiced and every tournament she entered, the billiard table gradually became the stage where she would carve her name into Bicolano sports history.

Precious Khatleen first discovered her passion for billiards while studying at Rinconada National Technical Vocational School (RNTVS). What initially started as an interest soon evolved into a serious commitment. Drawn by the challenge and precision the sport demanded, she devoted countless hours to learning the game and refining her skills.

As the years passed, she established her name as one of Iriga Cityโ€™s most promising young athletes. She consistently dominated local competitions, earning gold medals in the Iriga City Association of Private Schools (ICAPS) and City Meet tournaments. Each victory strengthened her confidence and proved that her talent was matched by her discipline and determination.
However, success did not come without challenges. Like many student-athletes, the โ€œLady Foxโ€ as they call her โ€“ faced the difficult task of balancing academics and sports. While many of her classmates focused solely on their studies, she had to manage demanding training schedules alongside classroom responsibilities, assignments, and examinations.

There were days when exhaustion threatened to overwhelm her. Long hours of practice often left little time for rest, while the pressure to excel both academically and athletically tested her resilience. Yet instead of allowing these challenges to discourage her, Awa embraced them as opportunities for growth.

Through these experiences, she learned valuable lessons about time management, self-discipline, and perseveranceโ€”qualities that would later become essential to her success on the national stage.

Her rise to the top was not immediate. At the 2024 Palarong Pambansa, Precious came within reach of her ultimate goal but settled for a silver medal finish. While standing on the podium was already a remarkable achievement, she knew she was capable of more. Rather than viewing the result as a disappointment, she saw it as motivation to push herself further.

That silver medal became a turning point in her career. Determined to improve, Precious returned to training with renewed focus and greater hunger for success. Every practice session became an opportunity to sharpen her skills, correct her mistakes, and prepare for another chance to represent Iriga City and the Bicol Region.

Now an incoming Grade 12 student of the University of Saint Anthony (USANT), Precious proudly represented Iriga City and the Bicol Region in the 66th Palarong Pambansa in Agusan del Sur. There, she achieved what no Bicolano billiards player had accomplished beforeโ€”capturing the gold medal in the Secondary Girls' 8-Ball and 9-Ball Billiards event and becoming Bicolโ€™s first-ever billiards gold medalist in the countryโ€™s most prestigious school sports competition. Her hard work eventually paid off. Precious displayed remarkable composure, accuracy, and confidence throughout the competition. Match after match, she outplayed some of the countryโ€™s most talented young billiards players, demonstrating the maturity and skill of a seasoned competitor.

The victory was more than a personal triumph. It was a milestone for Iriga City and the entire Bicol Region. Her achievement brought pride to her community and highlighted the immense potential of Bicolano athletes, even in sports that often receive less recognition and support.

More importantly, her story serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes who dream of achieving success despite the obstacles they face. From her humble beginnings at RNTVS to her rise as a national champion representing the University of Saint Anthony, the Lady Foxโ€™s journey reflects the power of persistence, patience, and hard work.

Today, her name is forever etched in Bicol sports history. Yet beyond the medals and accolades, perhaps her greatest accomplishment is the example she sets for the next generation. Her story reminds us that success is not measured solely by victories but by the courage to keep striving after every setback and the determination to continue chasing oneโ€™s dreams.

With record heatwaves and mightier storms shaping 2026, warning conversations call for action. World Environment Day 2026 amplifies this urgency with its official slogan โ€œFor Climate. For Our Future,โ€ marking a critical transition that defines this yearโ€™s global campaign โ€œ .โ€ We are stepping back from passive awareness and toward deploying nature-based solutions and circular innovations to actively protect our communities.

One of the main problems recognized is the traditional โ€œtake-make-disposeโ€ lifestyle, which leaves landfills overflowing and local ecosystems choked. To fix this, cities worldwide are now adopting the Circular Economy under the guidance of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). It redefines production and consumption by promoting reduced waste, keeping materials in use for as long as possible, and regenerating natural systems. By using localized technology, like smart waste-sorting, communities can transform organic waste into clean biogas and organic fertilizer, which turns pollution into a resource loop.

Simultaneously, Nature-Based Solutions are proving to be our strongest defense. Restoring native forests, wetlands, and mangroves is a form of biological engineering. These healthy ecosystems function as natural shock absorbers, absorbing carbon and reducing storm impacts by up to 30%. They serve as self-maintaining infrastructure that protects wildlife and outperforms industrialized concrete seawalls.

Local projects worldwide are proving that these are effective solutions. From IoT sensors mapping urban air pollution in real time to neighborhood rainwater harvesting systems, green technology is becoming more scalable and accessible. Tools like these allow small municipalities to sustain themselves independently.

Ultimately, sustainability in 2026 is an essential and innovation-driven narrative. Although tools like ecological restorations and green energy grids already exist, they are not enough. To secure our future, bridging the gap between science and innovation is a must to ensure we donโ€™t just survive the ongoing climate crisis but build a world designed to thrive through it.

Tuwing Linggo,
lumuluhod ako sa parehong bangko,
habang pinipigilan ang sariling umiyak.
Sa loob ng simbahang nagturo sa'kin
na ang pag-ibig ay banal,
napapatanong akoโ€”

bakit tila kasalanan
kapag ikaw ang minamahal?

Tuwing Linggo,
nagsisilbi ako sa altar,
umaasang bawat kasalanan ay kayang hugasan

Tuwing Linggo,
humihingi ako ng kapatawaran
para sa pag-ibig na hindi ko naman pinili kusang dumating

Kahit ang totoo,
wala naman akong sinaktan
kundi ang sarili ko
sa kakapilit na magbago

Tuwing Linggo,
pinipili kong maniwala
na baka isang araw
hindi ko na kailangang mamili

sa pagitan ng pananampalataya
at ng pusong nais lamang magmahal.

At tuwing Linggo,
unti-unti kong nauunawaanโ€”

na hindi kasalanan ang pag-ibig.

Na ang pinakamabigat na kasalanan
ay ang ikulong ang sarili
sa takot na maging totoo.

Known as the โ€œCity of Smilesโ€ and โ€œHome of Crystal Springs, โ€ Iriga City has been one of Camarines Surโ€™s assets. From how hospitable, bright, and kind its citizens are, the cityโ€™s heritage is what the Irigueรฑos can be proud of whenever tourists come and visit their beloved home, as it contains unique stories and experiences worth telling.

As the scorching heat of the sun illuminates the whole city, the early jog in Inorogan gives us ultimate tiredness every time we set foot on each one of the 160 stairs, challenging our endurance. But despite this, a fulfilling feeling sets in as we reach the top to get a breather and fulfill our religious duties. Its story started when three Aetas who found the image of the Virgin Mary cradling the Corpus Christi or body of Christ, on a hill in Mt. Asog, and that this image was believed to have saved the residents from the Mt.Asog eruption in 1614. It was also said that inspired by a dream, the Inorogan chapel was built by the philanthropist Pedro Sanchez. Other than that, the place was named Inorogan from the word "pinaorog" or favored one in reverence to the finding of the Image of the Virgin Nuestra Seรฑora de las Angustias, showing faith and devotion.

Going down, holding a tub full of inihaw na tilapia with โ€œsalbabidaโ€ on our shoulder, the trip to Masuso Spring Resort which has the coolest water can also never be forgotten. What people like about this resort other than its affordable entrance fee is its fresh water coming from the actual springs, allowing its pools to be chlorine-free, leaving the swimmers to be unbothered and just free.

Following the never-ending swimming, splashing, and slipping through the slides within the pool where small fishes can also be found, here comes the classic Grotto located in San Francisco, where the image of Inang Lourdes โ€“ the patron saint of all Irigueรฑos, can be found, and a majestic view of Mt. Asog can be appreciated. The grotto holds various stories. One of them is when this place was looked upon as the home of an aswang. Then after it became a place for the reenactment of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Another one is during World War II when the Japanese Army took advantage of its location and used it as a garrison โ€” also because of its captivating view. It may be nice to hear, but it also became a venue where Irigueรฑos opposed them to experience torture and even death. Today, the Grotto has become a place for worship and a feast. Every Tinagba Festival, Holy Mass is held and harvested fruit and vegetables dedicated to Ina

Just near the Grotto, the Saint Anthony of Padua Parish is there โ€” a solemn place where families can pray and reconnect with the Almighty. Every homily creates an impact on every being. This church has witnessed how the city grew as it has been around since the 19th century. The Agtas put the church to the torch in 1585 and that led to building a new place of worship. Yet it later surrendered to the typhoons and fire. An 18th-century house of worship completed in 1727 was also damaged by a fire in 1841. Shortly thereafter church-building began that was spearheaded by Fray Tomas de Alfafara, which gave way to the church today, a stone church equipped with twin belfries. Repairs were done in 1866 and 1892. At present, the church is a Level II heritage church as declared by the Philippines Historical Committee. The government agency also installed a historical marker in 1939.

At night, everyone could always freely visit the Plaza โ€“ the common โ€œtambayanโ€ after a long day. Back then, the plaza was only used for roaming around, but after a few renovations, it can be utilized more and is much more amazing to look at. Mesmerizing lights, delicious foods from small businesses and unexpectedly meeting a friend are now mostly the fun part of being there. The best view is seeing the children run freely, other people escaping from the reality of life, and just watching vehicles driving around the city proper.

These are just a few of the many places to visit and things to see at Iriga. There is still a lot to offer, but these are what the City is most proud of. This is every Irigueรฑos' heart, pride, and heritage. In celebration of the National Heritage Month this May with the theme of โ€œRoots and Horizons: Our Shared Heritage, Our Collective Future,โ€ let us all acknowledge where we came from. Donโ€™t hesitate to appreciate, be loud, and let us work together to achieve success for the future by utilizing the beautiful things we have.

We celebrate as The Sentinel/Ang Kalatas Batch โ€™26 youthful scribes accomplish another milestone in their academic journey.

Through ink-stained papers, sleepless deadlines, countless interviews, and stories that echoed truth and purpose, they have proven that journalism is more than writingโ€” it is passion, perseverance, and courage given a voice. Today marks not only the end of a school year, but also the culmination of memories, growth, and unwavering dedication to the craft they have chosen to pursue.

As these young journalists turn the page toward a new beginning, may they continue to wield their words with integrity and heart. The newsroom they leave behind will forever bear the mark of their brilliance, while the future ahead waits to be written by the very hands that once filled these pages with life.

Joshua Hebrew C. Andalis framed uncertainty as growth in life as he gave his Valedictory Address as the Class of 2026 Valedictorian during the Senior High School 9th Commencement Exercises held on May 16, 2026.

His speech revolved around a powerful metaphor, reminding his peers that โ€œlife is just as vast as the universeโ€ and emphasized that they are all โ€œgrowing through the uncertainty together.โ€

Andalis shared that he was fascinated by outer space growing up, mentioning heโ€™d read books and encyclopedias about it. He stated that it wasnโ€™t the planets or astronauts that intrigued him, but it was how it made him realize how small he was.

He pictured the same with life, reminding the audience that as they grow up, the heavier it feels when they are nearing reality. He stated, โ€œDoon natin unang nararamdaman na habang lumalaki tayo, mas dumarami ang ating mga katanungan kaysa sa kasagutan.โ€

Andalis pointed out that even if they are graduating from Senior High School, he still does not have his future figured out and is still scared saying โ€œI am scared of making the wrong decisions, I am scared of failing at things I care deeply about, and most of all, I am scared that the future might not look the way I imagined it would when I was younger. I think many of us feel that way, even if we do not always admit it out loudโ€

He incorporated the song of Daniel Cesar, particularly the line โ€œIs it a crime to be unsure?โ€ He answered it saying โ€œUncertainty is one of the most human things we can feel.โ€ He framed uncertainty as a place where answers arenโ€™t fully formed yet and life is just taking its course.

Andalis viewed that detours are maybe leading them to where they are meant to be. โ€œWho knows if what feels like confusion today, is actually just life itself happening the way it should?โ€”Who knows?โ€ he stated.

He emphasized the question โ€œWhat comes next?โ€ He followed by saying, โ€œuncertainty is not proof that we are lost, but maybe it is proof that we are growing.โ€ He then compared this to the universe stating โ€œEven the stars spend millions of years becoming what they are, and maybe people do too.โ€

Andalis looked at the bright side of uncertainty by tackling the โ€œfreeingโ€ aspect it brings. He said โ€œIf meaning is not simply handed to us, then perhaps itโ€™s something we create ourselves.โ€

Andalis paused as he gave his gratitude to the people he was with, the organizations he served, the experiences he had, the graduating class of 2026, and the University of Saint Anthony.

He reminded his peers to hug their parents and
friends tighter, take more pictures, say things they keep to themselves, and enjoy the moment as itโ€™s happening.

He called out saying โ€œWherever life takes us, I hope we remember this version of ourselves. Young enough to still be afraid, old enough to know the world is vast, but brave enough to step into it regardless.โ€

Andalis concluded his speech with a powerful statement, "Courage is not having certainty about the future, but more so about moving forward despite uncertainty. Maybe that is enough, and maybe that's the point."
