Ngunit ang siyang pangunahin, โ€œKailan makakamtan ang kalayaan?โ€
Sinumaโ€™y hanggang ngayon patuloy na nagiging alipin,

Mayroong nagapi at mayroong nagwagi kinalaunan

Kalayaang dugoโ€™t pawis maging buhay ang siyang puhunan,
Kalayaang hanggang ngayoโ€™y inaasam-asam.

JOINT STATEMENT OF THE CAMPUS MINISTRY OFFICE AND THE ENGAGED CITIZENSHIP ADVOCACY OF VERITAS COLLEGE OF IROSIN ON THE MAY 12, 2025 MIDTERM ELECTIONS

To all Veritans, faculty, staff, parents, and all stakeholders of VCI:

โ€œYou know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant.โ€ โ€“ Matthew 20:25-26

As we stand on the threshold of the May 12, 2025 Midterm Elections, we, the Campus Ministry Office and the Engaged Citizenship Advocacy of Veritas College of Irosin, call upon you to reflect deeply on the significance of this democratic exercise in the light of our shared Christian values.

In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus reminds us that greatness is not measured by power or position, but by a heart willing to serve. This teaching is especially urgent today, as we witness how political dynasties, disinformation, and personal interests often overshadow the true purpose of public service. The call of the Gospel is clear: leadership must never be a tool for dominance, but a path of humble and just service.

This election is more than a political eventโ€”it is a moral responsibility. We urge our students to grow as informed and engaged young citizens, our faculty to serve as models of integrity and truth, and our stakeholders to be vigilant, principled, and hopeful participants in the nationโ€™s renewal.

We therefore encourage everyone in our Veritan community to:

โ€ข Discern wisely and vote for candidates who embody servant leadership, not entitlement or ambition;
โ€ข Reject all forms of corruptionโ€”vote-buying, disinformation, and political manipulation have no place in a just society;
โ€ข Engage in respectful, truth-based dialogue, even with those who hold different views;
Remain hopeful and prayerful, trusting that God is at work in our collective desire for a better future.

Let us not be indifferent. Let us not remain silent. In this Jubilee Year of Hope, may our votes speak boldly of our faith, our values, and our unwavering commitment to Veritasโ€”to the Truth that demands justice, inspires courage, and sets our nation free.

Together, let us be pilgrims of hope, walking hand in hand toward a society where justice flows, peace reigns, and every voice is heard.

Issued this 8th of May, Jubilee Year 2025 Pilgrims of Hope, by the
Campus Ministry Office and the Engaged Citizenship Advocacy

This year, the Philippine election is hereby forthcoming. We, the people of this country, are bestowed with the freedom of voting for the deserving aspirants for the positions, which is a satisfactory aspect of being a democratic country. But instances arise, including the running aspirants who have allegedly recorded crimes or charges and some are reported convicts. This phenomenon has certainly become an immense issue that needs an urgent answer: should the government disqualify running aspirants who have recorded crimes or charges? However, is it not ironic to be ruled or governed by people who once did not abide by the laws of their own country?

A study's findings in India suggest that the electoral success of criminal politicians could be attributed to other factors such as a lack of proper institutions or lower state capacity. Hence, having a kind of person in the position won't be very helpful in attaining righteousness aligned to the government's objectiveโ€”for they have broken and violated laws. Imagine what would happen if we let these crooked people rule us. So, it is vital to amend laws in qualifications of candidacy to eradicate the chance of having wicked people in the throne, as this issue shall not be belittled. If the government fails to address it, outcomes might bring disruption and suffering to both people and the economy.

The Omnibus Election Code of the Philippines Article I section XII mandates thatโ€”"Any person who has been declared by competent authority insane or incompetent, or has been sentenced by final judgment for subversion, insurrection, rebellion or for any offense for which he has been sentenced to a penalty of more than eighteen months or for a crime involving moral turpitude, shall be disqualified to be a candidate and to hold any office." It indicates an inclusive government when disqualifying an aspirant who has been involved in offenses and moral turpitude, but it shall be amended to have better people to lead this country. A politician must be unblemished by any wickedness, for he must be a good role model. A qualified candidate should not have any recorded of frauds or convicted of crimes but rather ethical standards, promoting the spirit of righteousness, and honesty.

However, according to a commentary by Millan Vishnav, Indian voters preferred candidates with serious criminal records over their "clean" counterparts, as these preferred candidates are expected by Indians to have a higher credibility, but it turned out to be because of their information disclosure and lack of transparency. The Philippines must learn from this evidence. To its people, being meticulous and a responsible voter can bring this ideology to an end, especially to our government. It should focus on amending laws to address the prevalence of this occurrence, disqualifying an undeserving aspirant with involvements in any offenses and charges. It should be the ramification and it's the best way to start cleaning up our own politics.

Yet it is truly disheartening that citizens are often electing such people with allegations and are linked to fraudulent activities, corruption, or crimes. Henceforth, this composition hopefully enlightens Filipinos; ultimately, our government should stick with their pledge, which is to implement and make laws, prevail over crooked ways, and maintain the integrity of its ruled land to contribute meaningfully to our country.

After all, Rev. Fr. Odine L. Ar**la was right when he once emphasized, "The new normal is not normal." It's the new norm that is accepted to be righteous and ordinary by some despite having the risk that could exacerbate the presence of an occurring problem.

So now, ask yourself: are you with this irony or a destroyer of this ideology?

Every calloused hand carries a tale of silent struggles, effort, and an unbreakable spirit of hope. This Labor Day, we raise our voices in unity to honor the beating heart of our nation,

Behind every product we use, every service we receive, and every comfort we enjoy, there is a story of dedication.

There is a father waking before sunrise to farm the land.

There is a mother who wakes at dawn to set up her stall, enduring the heat and long hours just to sell her goods and provide for her family with dignity and strength.

There is a tricycle driver navigating crowded streets just to earn enough for the day.

There is a janitor quietly sweeping our halls while the world moves past them

There is a teacher burning the midnight oil to prepare tomorrowโ€™s lessons.

There is also a nurse working long hours tending to the sick.

There are OFWs thousands of miles away, enduring homesickness just to provide for their families and uplift our economy.

There are also laborers working under the sun to keep our cities alive and thriving.

From the humblest vendors to the highest-ranking professionals, each one of you regardless of job title, location, or pay scale deserves not only our recognition but our deepest gratitude. Your sacrifices often go unseen. Your strength is tested daily. Yet, you show up. You push through. You make it work. And in doing so, you move the Philippines forward. You show us the true meaning of resilience. You are the reason we wake up each day with food on our tables, clothes on our backs, safe roads to travel, and clean spaces to live and learn in.

Today, we salute you not just for what you do, but for who you are: resilient, dignified, and committed.
We thank you and we promise to continue fighting for a nation that values not only the output of its workers but their dignity and rights as human beings. May we always remember, no role is too small, no effort too insignificant. Every working hand builds the pillars of a stronger, kinder, and more just Philippines.
