A Day of Sacrifice and Gratitude

Today marks the 10th of Dhu al-Hijjah, commemorating Ibrahim’s sacrifice and the spirit of Hajj — where devotion is remembered and generosity is shared.

It’s a day filled with love, gratitude, and acceptance through sacrifice that connects millions of people and Muslims worldwide.

May we spend this day in prayer, devotion, shared meals, and acts of charity alongside our loved ones.

Eid Mubarak!

The survival camp brought various activities such as navigation, shelter building, and emergency and safety training on day one. Hiking on the second day, and an obstacle course on the last day.

The following scouts participated in the survival camp:

The success of these scouts serves as a milestone not just for the participants, but for the entire organization of the Senior Scouts of Matlang National High School.

“As their outfit advisor, I am proud of how they represented our school with confidence, responsibility, and determination. They demonstrated outstanding performance throughout the Survival Camp and showed discipline, teamwork, resilience, and leadership despite the challenges they encountered during the activities,” said Sctr. Stella Mariz Daffon, Outfit Adviser.

PAGPUPUGAY SA MGA BAGONG ISKA MULA SA MATLANG NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

Matlang National High School (MNHS) is honored to congratulate its three alumni who passed the University of the Philippines College Admission Test (UPCAT).

UPCAT is considered one of the hardest college entrance examinations in the Philippines. Here is a breakdown on how hard it is: First, the system is extremely competitive, as it is a percentile-based exam where applicants must rank among the top scorers. Second, there is the time pressure, as hundreds of questions must be answered within a limited time. Lastly, 0.25 points are deducted for every incorrect answer due to guessing.

According to Explained PH, this year there were 147,437 applicants nationwide, and only 18,350 qualified. Compared with last year’s 135,236 applicants, only 17,996 qualified. This shows only a 9% increase in the number of qualified applicants. Among this year’s qualifiers, three learners from Matlang NHS successfully qualified.

Baclea-an, Camugao, and Waminal have been sources of pride not only to their families but also to the MNHS community. Each has its own strengths in both academics and journalism.

“Baclea-an was never one for silence—she found her strength in using her voice. As a debate team leader, she led her group to the division-level semifinals. A natural leader, she became Editor-in-Chief of MNHS’ publication, known for her preparation and drive—culminating in her recognition as batch salutatorian.

Camugao is a silent fighter, driven by sharp intellect and keen insight. Excelling behind the lens, she reached the National Schools Press Conference and became Business Editor of MNHS’ publication. She balanced this with academic excellence, graduating as class valedictorian—proof that quiet strength is powerful.

Waminal has always been the silent leader—consistently showing up for herself and others. A long-time class president, she leads with quiet confidence, never seeking attention yet always delivering. As the News Editor of MNHS’ school publication, she produced remarkable results with precision and dedication—her achievements may not make much noise, but they consistently speak for themselves,” said Ma’am Bethuel Rose Sorote, STEM Adviser.

With this remarkable moment, Matlang NHS is honored to share their accomplishment: no matter how silent or outspoken a person is, as long as you have the strength to express yourself through action rather than noise, you can make an impact not only on yourself, but also on your community.

No Retreat, No Surrender: The Bataan Spirit Lives On

“Courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it.” — Nelson Mandela

Araw ng Kagitingan or Day of Valor, observed every April 9, honors the bravery of Filipino and American soldiers during World War II. In April 1942, after months of fighting with severe shortages, thousands of troops in Bataan surrendered to Japanese forces, leading to the horrific Bataan Death March, where many prisoners perished due to brutal conditions.

Despite immense hardships, these soldiers showed incredible resilience. Their stand, though ending in surrender, bought crucial time for Allied forces and became a powerful symbol of the preciousness of freedom and the sacrifices made to protect it.

This day reminds us that bravery isn't just on the battlefield. It's also found in daily life—standing up for what's right, persevering through struggles, and helping others.

As we remember their story, let us value the freedom we have. Remember, it's the strength of spirit and the will to never give up that truly counts. In our own ways, let's honor them by being responsible, brave, and kind citizens.

Salvation Through Christ’s Resurrection

Easter Sunday also known as Resurrection Day, is celebrated to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. This pivotal event, occurring three days after His crucifixion, powerfully demonstrates Christ's ultimate triumph over sin and death. It stands as the ultimate proof of Christ's divine nature and His power over death, forming the very bedrock upon which Christian belief is founded.

Through this resurrection, believers are offered the profound hope of salvation and eternal life. Easter Sunday is a joyous testament to God's immense love and His promise of redemption—symbolizing new beginnings and spiritual rebirth for all who place their faith in Christ.

What happens when God feels silent?

Today is Black Saturday, often called the "Great Silence”. It is a day that speaks volumes about those moments in life when we feel like nothing is happening.

For the disciples, this was a day of profound confusion and grief. Their Lord was in the tomb, and all their hopes seemed shattered. They didn't know the story wasn't over.

Yet this silence is not empty. It is a pause, an in-between where grief remains, and hope quietly waits.

Black Saturday reminds us that even in our own quiet and uncertain seasons, something greater may be unfolding beyond what we can see.

Because sometimes, the most powerful beginnings come after the silence.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” — John 3:16

Good Friday reminds us of the immense love and sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who gave His life for the sins of humanity. Through His suffering and death, He offered forgiveness and redemption to all.

His final words, “Tetelestai” (“It is finished”), signify the fulfillment of His mission and the victory over sin.

On this holy day, let us come together in prayer and reflection with our loved ones. May we honor God’s grace and deepen our faith, finding peace, mercy, and hope in His sacrifice.

God bless you all.

“And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.’” – Luke 22:19

Maundy comes from the Latin word mandatum, which means “command,” where Jesus Christ declared His commandment: “love one another as I have loved you” (John 13:34). It is a significant day in the Christian Holy Week, commemorating the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with His disciples.

It instills values that are still relevant today—to love one another as He has loved us. Despite our differences—our beliefs, gender, and culture—judgment is not the remedy, but love.

Let us remember that Jesus sacrificed Himself out of love for us. In doing so, we should commemorate this day by showing love to the people around us. Let this day be a moment to express love and appreciation for others in the name of Jesus Christ.
