Fifty-three years have passed since Ferdinand Marcos Sr. declared Martial Law, yet the wounds inflicted upon the nation remain open. The dictatorshipโs legacy is written in the blood of more than 107,000 victims of rights violations, with thousands tortured, disappeared, and killed, and billions of pesos plundered from public coffers. Marcos silenced dissent by shutting down 484 media outlets, crushing the free press, and branding truth-tellers as enemies of the state. What was framed as a project of national security was in reality a ruthless campaign to consolidate power, enrich a few, and destroy institutions that should have protected the people. These atrocities remain a grim reminder that the darkest chapter of our history is not a story of the past alone but a warning of what happens when truth is erased and freedom is stifled.
Today, we live under conditions that echo those dark years. Corruption persists, human rights abuses continue, and the press is again under attack. Journalists are harassed, red-tagged, silenced, and even killed for exposing the truth. Campus publications are not spared, as attempts to restrict student expression and intimidate young writers mirror the same repression once weaponized under dictatorship. The Anti-Terror Law, political dynasties, and a culture of impunity continue to legitimize state violence and normalize fear. In this climate, defending press freedom is not just about protecting journalists; it is about safeguarding the peopleโs right to know, their right to dissent, and their right to demand justice.
As the official student publication of UPHSI, KASANAG stands in unwavering solidarity with the victims and survivors of Martial Law, with journalists across the country, and with all communities silenced by oppression. We affirm our commitment to continue telling stories that matter, to resist historical distortion, and to call out corruption and state violence without fear. On this day of remembrance, we echo the cry of those who came before us: that truth must prevail, that journalists must be defended, and that no regime can extinguish the light of a free press. The struggle against tyranny is far from over, and we vow to carry it forward.
Never Forget! Never Again!
