โNotre Dame of Jolo High School โ Kasulutan officially opened classes for Academic Year 2026โ2027 on June 8, 2026, as students returned to campus following the summer break. However, the opening day was cut short after a strong earthquake struck the area, prompting the evacuation of students, teachers, and staff and the subsequent suspension of classes.
As part of the opening-day activities, teachers introduced themselves to their respective classes and conducted introductory activities to help students become familiar with one another. The opening day also marked the implementation of the school's newly established heterogeneous sectioning system, which places learners of varying academic abilities in the same sections.
Students were adjusting to their new classroom environment and reconnecting with friends and classmates when the earthquake occurred. Following established safety protocols, students, teachers, and staff were immediately evacuated to the school field to ensure their safety. Shortly thereafter, tsunami warnings were issued, prompting the school administration to suspend classes as a precautionary measure.
Students were advised to remain within the school premises and wait for their parents or guardians to pick them up. Once cleared for dismissal, they were allowed to leave the campus and return home safely.
Despite the unexpected disruption, students were able to settle into their new sections and begin the academic year. The incident marked an unusual start to the school year and highlighted the importance of preparedness and safety during emergencies.
