🌳 The Philippines' Largest Natural Shield Is Disappearing.

The Sierra Madre, the Philippines' longest mountain range and one of Luzon's most important natural carbon sinks and storm buffers, is losing around 9,000 hectares of forest cover every year, according to the Haribon Foundation. Spanning nearly 1.4 million hectares, the mountain range continues to lose forests despite existing legal protections.

⚠️ Conservationists say illegal logging, mining, road construction, forest clearing, and other destructive development projects continue to threaten the region. Sierra Madre had already lost about 130,000 hectares of forest cover between 2003 and 2020, even though parts of the range are protected under Republic Act No. 9125, which established the Northern Sierra Madre Natural Park, along with other environmental laws.

🌧️ Sierra Madre plays a vital role in protecting millions of people by reducing flood risks, absorbing rainfall, preserving biodiversity, and acting as a natural barrier against powerful typhoons. Experts warn that if deforestation continues, restoring these critical ecosystems will become increasingly difficult.

How much longer can one of the Philippines' most important natural defenses continue protecting communities if its forests keep disappearing?
