LGU Kalibo Joins “Sayaw Papawis” for Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Kalibo, Aklan – October 20, 2025
In celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Aklan Breast Cancer Awareness Coalition, spearheaded by the Philippine Society of General Surgeons and the Municipality of Kalibo, together with partner government and non-government organizations, led the activity “Sayaw Papawis para sa Breast Cancer Awareness Month” on October 19, 2025, in Kalibo, Aklan.
The event kicked off with a walk from the Provincial Capitol Grounds to the Pastrana Park Covered Court, followed by a zumba session, health talk, and testimonial sharing from cancer survivors. The activity brought together women’s groups, health advocates, and community members from Kalibo and nearby municipalities to show support for breast cancer awareness, early detection, and prevention.
Highlighting the program was a Breast Cancer Awareness Talk by Dr. Joseph Jenus Sarabia, who emphasized the importance of regular self-examinations, early diagnosis, and timely medical consultation. Dr. Sarabia reminded women not to let fear or embarrassment hinder them from seeking medical help, as early detection remains the best protection against breast cancer.
He explained that breast cancer can affect women as early as their 30s and that many cases worsen due to delayed medical consultation. He also shared guidance on performing self-breast examinations seven to ten days after the start of the menstrual cycle, preferably while bathing or lying down.
Dr. Sarabia likewise underscored the government’s continued support through the National Integrated Cancer Control Act, which recognizes cancer patients as Persons with Disability (PWDs) entitled to benefits and assistance.
Through this initiative, the Municipality of Kalibo and its partners reaffirmed their collective commitment to promoting women’s health, preventive care, and early detection, while empowering communities to take active roles in the fight against breast cancer.
Together, we can raise awareness, spread hope, and save lives. 💖🎗️
