Today, the music stops.

For a music minister, Good Friday is the most jarring day of the liturgical calendar. We spend our entire year filling the sanctuary with sound—arranging harmonies, rehearsing transitions, and leading the congregation with our voices and instruments.

But today, we are called into the stark, profound weight of silence.

"When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, 'It is finished,' and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit." (John 19:30)

It is incredibly easy to spend today’s service worrying about hitting the right minor chords, executing a flawless a ca****la piece, or managing the sheer exhaustion of Holy Week. But standing at the foot of the cross requires us to lay down our need to perform.

The work of salvation was not accomplished by our perfect singing. It was accomplished by His perfect, agonizing surrender.

He did not say "It is paused" or "It is almost done." He said, "It is finished." The striving is over. The debt is paid. The veil is torn.

When you lead your congregation today, do not sing to perform. Sing as a witness to the greatest act of love the world has ever known. And when the final note rings out and the church fades into complete silence, let that silence pierce your own heart. Strip away the titles, the talents, and the logistics, and simply stand in awe of the cross.

🎼 Maundy Thursday: The Transition to Intimate Watching.
Holy Week shifts today.

We leave the public ministry of public teaching behind and enter the intimate, final hours. We remember the Last Supper, the institution of the Eucharist, and the washing of the feet, the ultimate command of service and love. But the night deepens in the garden.

Jesus invites His disciples to Gethsemane and asks, 'Could you not watch with me one hour?' In the shadows of the olive trees, He finds them asleep, and says: 'Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.' (Mark 14:38)

How easily we, too, fall asleep. We get distracted by our performative loop of productivity, our anxieties about final Triduum rehearsals, and our busy management schedules. We allow the noise of logistics to overpower the quiet zeal (like the image).

This sacred night calls us back to a true huddle—the watching huddle. To watch. To pray. To offer a true foretaste of vigilance, not just efficient management. Watch and pray. Find your prayer. Build the ministry.

May your music resonate with purified zeal and a heart that is watching with Christ this Triduum.

🎼 Holy Tuesday: The Day of Broken Promises
The palms from Sunday have barely dried, but the atmosphere in today's Gospel is already suffocatingly heavy.

Jesus sits at the table, looks directly at the closest friends who have followed Him for years, and drops a devastating truth: "One of you will betray me." Moments later, He looks at Peter—the loudest, most passionate one in the room—and tells him that before the rooster crows, Peter will deny even knowing Him.

For those of us serving in the music ministry, Holy Tuesday is a piercing reality check.

Every Sunday, we stand in the loft or on the altar and sing the boldest declarations of faith. We sing about surrendering it all. We sing about following Him anywhere. We lead the congregation in songs of absolute devotion.

But Holy Tuesday holds a mirror up to our deep humanity. How often does our loud worship on Sunday contradict our quiet lives on Tuesday? How often do we harbor pride, hold onto unforgiveness toward a fellow choir member, or lose our patience the second rehearsal gets difficult?

We make grand promises like Peter, and yet, we fall so easily.

But here is the profound, shattering grace of Holy Week: Jesus knew exactly what Peter was about to do. He knew exactly what Judas had already done in his heart. And yet, He still sat at the table with them. He still loved them to the very end.

The Lord does not need our flawless track record. He does not need our perfect pitch or our perfectly executed harmonies right now. He wants our honest, broken, and contrite hearts.

As we step closer to the heavy silence of the Triduum, let us stop trying to impress God with our musical excellence and start bringing Him our actual flaws. Let the facade drop.
