Sigaw ni Loloโ€™t Lola, ni Nanay at Tatay,
Kuya, Ate, Bunsoโ€”sabay-sabay.
Boses ng bayan, iisa ang tugon:
Itigil ang kurapsyon!

Sa susunod na halalan, aral ay baunin,
Bumoto ng tama, huwag palihim.
Para sa kinabukasan, para sa bansa,
Hustisyaโ€™t dangal ang ating adhika!

Kayaโ€™t isigaw mo, huwag kang tumigil,
Tinig ng bayan ay โ€™di mapipigil.
Pagbabagoโ€™y atin, pag-asaโ€™y buo,
Sa laban ng masaโ€”tiyak ang panalo!

Itigil ang kurapsyon! Itigil ang kurapsyon!
Sigaw ng lahat, iisa ang tugon:

Do Day at ASU Kalibo: Students Refresh Campus for ISO Accreditation

The Aklan State Universityโ€“Kalibo community came together on September 19, 2025 for its โ€œDo Dayโ€ (Clean-up Day), as students rolled up their sleeves to prepare the campus for the upcoming ISO accreditation visit on September 22โ€“23, 2025. More than just tidying up, the activity underscored the importance of fostering a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for the entire ASU - Kalibo community.

Each college took responsibility for designated areas, ensuring every corner of the university was covered. The College of Computer Studies (CCS) handled the main building and the Alumni, GAD, USC, and GSCO offices. The College of Engineering and Architecture (CEA) focused on refreshing its own building, while the College of Industrial Education (CIE) worked on the PT building and cafeteria surroundings. The College of Industrial Technology (CIT) took charge of cleaning around its facilities, and the Hospitality Management students organized the library, classrooms, kitchen laboratories, and FABLAB.

To ensure accountability, students logged in and out throughout the activityโ€”guaranteeing that everyone contributed to the collective effort.

The โ€œDo Dayโ€ clean-up was more than a pre-accreditation initiative; it was a showcase of unity, responsibility, and school spirit. It reflected ASU-Kaliboโ€™s unwavering commitment to excellence, sustainability, and creating a vibrant campus environment that supports learning, innovation, and pride in being part of ASU.

The beach at sunset, a canvas painted with hues of orange and pink between five and six in the afternoon, has always been a scene that radiates peace and relaxation โ€” at this hour, the world is quiet and only the sound of the waves echoes along with the group of birds that go straight home before dark. Fishermen would sail their boats ashore as they wrap up their day, with or without a catch.

My eyes, ever hopeful, would scan the horizon, searching for the familiar silhouettes of my unclesโ€™ orange and blue boats, like jewels bobbing on the vast, whispering ocean. From my point of view, they carry anchors of hope, symbols of a life lived in rhythm with the sea. I would patiently wait for the distant figures to become discernible, for the telltale signs of a successful voyage. Whether laden with the bounty of the sea or returning empty-handed, their arrival has always been a celebration each day. A wave, a shared smile, and the steady hum of their engines as they steer towards the familiar dock are a ritual as comforting as the ebb and flow of the tide.

Even on days when the nets came up empty, their faces bore no trace of disappointment. And as any other fisherfolk would say, โ€œhin-aga uman,โ€ theyโ€™d continue to set sail with the hope of what tomorrow would bring. It's the quiet resilience and optimism that my uncles instilled in me.
They taught me that the rhythm of the sea is like the ebb and flow of life's fortunes. They showed me that there would be seasons of abundance, times when the world would conspire in my favor, and times when the tide would turn against me.

Hope, I learned, is not a fleeting emotion but a constant companion, present in every sunrise, every voyage, every homecoming. The boats that sailed at dawn and docked at sunset prove that there is no yesterday if it werenโ€™t for the present. There's no present if we don't wait for tomorrow.

So, if you're feeling unsure of life today, ugma na pud. Let's wait for the sun to rise and try again. For the sea, like life, always offers another chance, another sunrise, another boat to chase on the horizon.

Your mind is a garden. It grows your character, shapes your future, and blossoms into how you present yourself to the world. It is your most powerful toolโ€”the compass that guides your next steps. Every thought you entertain matters, whether itโ€™s โ€œIโ€™m a failureโ€ or โ€œHow can I improve?โ€ You cannot always control the thoughts that appear in your mind, but you can control which ones you allow to stay. The choice is yours: feed the negative or nurture the positive.

Rememberโ€”โ€œYour perspective determines your reality.โ€
Choose to see beauty, even in the smallest things. In the face of minor inconveniences, in traffic, or even in mistakes like receiving the wrong order, remind yourself that all things work together for goodโ€”even if they donโ€™t go according to your perfect little plan.

And when you notice a weedโ€”those thoughts that disturb your peace and harm your mental healthโ€”pluck it out. Instead, water your mind, body, and soul with what uplifts and strengthens you.

You have the power to change the world, and it starts with your mind. Change the way you think. Be intentional about seeing the beauty in everything. Stay positive.

โ€œThe most powerful tool in the world is the mind. How you use it is up to you.โ€ โ€“ Harry Petsanis

In the quiet town of Bulwang, Numancia, Aklan, Joseph Victor Briones has always stood outโ€”not by the way he looks, but by the strength he carries in his heart. At 19, Victor is a second-year student from the College of Computer Studies, taking up Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, Major in Software Engineering at Aklan State University - Kalibo. But his journey goes far beyond academics. It is a story of overcomingโ€”not limitations, but the strength that blossoms when one chooses to rise despite every obstacle.

He remembers those early years fondlyโ€”marked by laughter, curiosity, and a boundless eagerness to explore. โ€œI was always asking questions,โ€ he recalls, a smile tugging at the memory. โ€œI loved making friends and finding joy in the little things.โ€ Even then, he knew his path would look different. But rather than letting that unsettle him, he embraced itโ€”transforming every detour into a discovery.

Growing up, Victor became aware of how others perceived him. There were looks, whispersโ€”questions left unspoken but felt all the same. Still, he stood tall in spirit. โ€œIt wasnโ€™t always easy,โ€ he admits. โ€œBut I realized their reactions said more about them than they did about me.โ€ That quiet insight became his armor, soft yet unbreakable, allowing him to face each day with courage.

There were times he felt apart from the world around him, standing just outside the games others played or the spaces they moved through with ease. Yet, instead of letting those moments weigh him down, Victor gathered their lessons like petalsโ€”empathy, patience, resilience. Each one shaped, refined, and strengthened him. โ€œI couldnโ€™t always join in,โ€ he shares, โ€œbut that taught me to understand others better and made me more determined.โ€

That determination is something he carries every day. When physical spaces posed challenges or expectations fell short of his abilities, Victor met them with a quiet resolve. He didnโ€™t ask for pity, nor did he seek approval. Instead, he simply let his work and attitude speak. โ€œI donโ€™t waste energy proving,โ€ he says. โ€œI just keep doing, and eventually, people see.โ€

Behind that strength is a foundation that never faltered: his family. His parents, especially, saw not what the world sometimes feared to see, but what Victor truly wasโ€”capable, brilliant, deserving. โ€œThey see my ability, not my disability,โ€ he says, the words soft but certain. Their encouragement has been his anchor; their belief, his wings. Through every low point, their voices reminded him of his worth and lifted him back up.

Like any young adult stepping into college life, Victor faces his share of battlesโ€”moments of doubt, days of frustration. But he has learned not to run from them. He allows himself to feel, to write, and to breathe. โ€œThen I remind myself how far Iโ€™ve come,โ€ he says. When that isnโ€™t enough, he leans on faith, family, and the quiet fire within him that never goes out.

At his core, Victor is driven by more than ambition. Heโ€™s driven by purpose. โ€œI want to use my voice to inspire,โ€ he says. โ€œI want others to find strength in their own stories.โ€ This desire to lift others up while climbingโ€”that is what makes him not just an individual, but a light for those who struggle in silence.

To anyone who feels confined by their circumstances, Victor offers a gentle truth: โ€œYou are more than your limits. Start where you are. Use what you have. And take one step at a time.โ€ His words, like his journey, carry no bitternessโ€”only hope.

He doesnโ€™t wish to be seen as extraordinaryโ€”only as someone who keeps going: someone who loves deeply, chooses courage, and walks forward, even when the path is steep. Not defined by the conditions of his body, but by the resilience of his spirit.

Victorโ€™s story isnโ€™t loud or flashy. It doesnโ€™t unfold on grand stages. Yet, with each quiet victory and every step he takes against the odds, a revolution unfolds. His strength doesnโ€™t shout; it whispers. Itโ€™s not in leaps, but in the steady steps he takes, one after another, with unwavering faith.

And if thereโ€™s one truth his story leaves behind, it is this: Our struggles donโ€™t diminish us. They shape us. Through faith, love, and persistence, we can riseโ€”not in spite of our journey, but because of it.

So now, the question is this: Are you willing to take a brave step today, even when the path ahead doesnโ€™t seem built for you?

ASU-Kalibo freshmen did not let the rain dampen their enthusiasm as they actively participated in the National Service Training Program (NSTP) orientation held at the function hall from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. The activity gave students a closer look at the NSTP course, emphasizing the advocacies of its two componentsโ€”the Reserve Officersโ€™ Training Corps (ROTC) and the Civic Welfare Training Service (CWTS)โ€”while helping them decide which track to pursue for the year ahead.

The program opened with an invocation and the singing of the national anthem, followed by welcome remarks from Dr. Angeline G. Regalado, Campus Director. In her message, she stressed that NSTP is more than just a course requirementโ€”it is a platform for building civic consciousness, leadership, and service. She urged the students to embrace the experience with open minds and open hearts, treating it as an opportunity to discover their potential as leaders and community servants.

Prof. Richard E. Dionisio echoed this message, describing the orientation as โ€œthe youthโ€™s moment.โ€ He also introduced the officers behind the program, including sergeants, colonels, and advanced ROTC officials, whose presence underscored the significance of the studentsโ€™ choices.

The session then shifted to the ROTC advocacy, which highlighted discipline, resilience, and leadership under pressure. Presenters explained that ROTC training goes beyond military drills, serving as a means of developing character, camaraderie, and responsibility. Students engaged actively, raising questions to better understand the opportunities that come with joining ROTC.

Attention later turned to the NSTP law, Republic Act 9163, which laid out the programโ€™s history, guidelines, and procedures. A video presentation gave students a glimpse of the ROTC journey, portraying it not only as a rigorous experience but also as a meaningful avenue for service and lasting friendships.

The CWTS component was then introduced, focusing on its mission of shaping responsible citizens through community engagement. Speakers emphasized how CWTS projectsโ€”from disaster response to drug awareness campaignsโ€”enable students to make a tangible impact on society. The message was clear: even small acts of service can spark meaningful change.
A highlight of the orientation was the distribution of application forms, where students made their choice between ROTC and CWTS. Applications were due the following day, September 9, at noon. The program concluded with a group photo, capturing both the officials and the freshmen as they marked this pivotal step in their college journey.

For many, the NSTP orientation was more than an introduction to a courseโ€”it was a defining moment. Whether choosing ROTC, with its focus on discipline and service under pressure, or CWTS, dedicated to community development and civic responsibility, each student is now poised to take on a role that will shape their growth as leaders of tomorrow.

Literacy isn't just about decoding squiggles on a page; it's about unlocking the power to shape our own narratives. This is where history, identity, and resistance collide. When we empower individuals with literacy, we empower communities to thrive, to innovate, to question the very foundations of our world, to challenge the systems that seek to confine us, and to envision futures that those in power would prefer remain hidden.

In a world saturated with information, the ability to discern truth from falsehood, to analyze perspectives, and to articulate our own thoughts becomes more important. Literacy empowers us to be active participants in democracy, to hold our leaders accountable, and to advocate for the changes we want to see. It allows us to connect with different cultures, to broaden our understanding of the human experience, and to foster empathy in a world that often feels fractured and divided.

As Anne Shirley so eloquently put it, โ€œPeople laugh at me because I use big words. But if you have big ideas, you have to use big words to express them, don't you?โ€ Let us all dare to use those big words, to express those big ideas, to create a world where everyone can wield the power of literacy to shape their own destiny, and remember that every word read, every sentence written, is an act of defiance, a step towards a future where knowledge is power and where every voice has the opportunity to be heard.
