AIH FabLab Officially Launched at ASU-Kalibo

The Aklan State University - Kalibo Campus officially hosted the launching ceremony of the Aklan Innovators Hub Fabrication Laboratory (AIH FabLab) on June 17, following its groundbreaking ceremony held last year. Located within the ASU-Kalibo campus, the newly completed facility is designed to support local innovation and enterprise development by enhancing access to technology for Aklanon micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), as well as for students and researchers.

The project was made possible through the collaboration of Aklan State University, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and the Provincial Government of Aklan, with the strong support of Governor Jose Enrique M. Miraflores. Among the key movers behind the initiative was Dr. Amzi V. Martirez, Dean of the College of Industrial Education, whose perseverance and coordination with DTI, with support from the university administration, were instrumental in bringing the FabLab to life.

During the ceremony, Governor Miraflores emphasized the importance of inter-agency partnerships in promoting sustainable and inclusive development. Likewise, DTI Region VI Director Rachel N. Nufable highlighted the significance of the Shared Service Facility (SSF) Project in empowering local entrepreneurs by providing access to advanced tools and technology. DTI Aklan Provincial Director Romel L. Amihan also extended his appreciation to all stakeholders who contributed to the success of the project.

Representing the university, ASU President Dr. Jeffrey A. Clarin reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to supporting both national and local government initiatives by ensuring the delivery of technology-driven services and opportunities to students, researchers, and MSMEs.

The event was also attended by ASU-Kalibo Campus Director Dr. Angeline G. Regalado, along with faculty and staff from various units of the university—reflecting unified support from the campus for the FabLab and its goals.

Also in attendance were representatives from the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, Provincial Engineering Office, Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) - Aklan, and the Aklan Tourism and Trade Investment Promotions Center (ATTIPC). The event received media coverage from Kalibo Cable TV, Aklan Cable TV, PIA Aklan, and OMNIFAB.

Established under the DTI’s Shared Service Facility program, the AIH FabLab is intended to support MSMEs in developing new products, improving existing ones, and exploring new income opportunities. Moving forward, the facility is expected to become a collaborative space where innovation, education, and entrepreneurship converge—benefiting both the academic and business communities of Aklan.
