From the Mountains of Kalinga to the Skies of the World

There is a particular kind of courage that comes from dreaming big in a small town. For Angilyne C. Surigao, who grew up in Tabuk, Kalinga, the idea of one day soaring through the skies as a flight attendant must have felt impossibly far away. And yet, she never let go of it. Like many young people from the provinces, she carried the weight of financial constraints and unspoken pressure of family expectations.

Before she ever set foot outside the Philippines, Angilyne laid the groundwork right in her own backyard. She pursued a degree that aligned perfectly with her aspirations, choosing a field that would give her both the knowledge and the professional language to compete in the world's hospitality settings. Graduating from Kalinga State University with a degree in Hospitality Management was not just an achievement it was a declaration of intent. In a province where opportunities can be scarce, she chose to invest in herself, arming herself with the skills, discipline, and professional foundation that the industry demands. Her education became the first wing that would eventually carry her into the sky.

She made the bold decision to leave the Philippines and build her credentials from the ground up in Singapore. Over roughly three years, she moved through roles that sharpened her skill, tested her resilience, and quietly built the profile of someone ready for a world-class airline. Each role was a stepping stone, not just a job. From learning the nuances of five-star hospitality under the Shangri-La brand, to managing a team as a Host Manager, to representing excellence at one of Southeast Asia's most iconic entertainment destinations, she was preparing herself. She was building the person that Etihad Airways would one day choose.

And then, the call came. After years of early mornings, long shifts, tight budgets, and homesickness, after the quiet sacrifices that no one sees. The girl from Tabuk, Kalinga, a graduate of Kalinga State University, a young woman who worked her way across various establishments had done it.

Her story is a reminder that dreams born in quiet places can lead to the most extraordinary destinations. For every young woman from a small town who has ever looked up at a plane in the sky and imagined herself inside it โ€“ Angilyne's journey is proof that with education, grit, patience, and a willingness to sacrifice comfort for purpose, those skies are not out of reach.

A Song That Unites: One Graduate's Gift to Us All

In a time when the world so often feels divided, it takes a rare and courageous voice to rise above the noise and remind us of what binds us together. At this moment, that voice belongs to a BSHM graduate who is now a teacher whose original composition has moved audiences, stirred pride, and brought communities closer in ways that words alone cannot.

The song, born from a deep love of heritage and a genuine longing for connection, weaves together the threads of tradition and modern sentiment into something wholly beautiful. From its opening notes, listeners are transported into memory, into belonging, into the warmth of a shared identity that transcends age, background, and distance. He drew from personal experience from childhood festivities, from the stories of elders, from the laughter shared among friends and transformed those memories into a musical narrative that resonates with everyone who hears it.

The lyrics speak of roots and belonging, of the pride one carries in knowing where they come from, and of the joy that flourishes when people come together as one. It is at once an homage to the past and a celebration of the present a song that will echo long after the graduation ceremony fades.

A Celebration of Culture and Togetherness
Camaraderie the spirit of mutual support, shared laughter, and genuine kinship is not easily captured in art. The composition was performed at a community gathering where it brought smiles to the eyes of many, and laughter to the faces of all. It reminded everyone present that culture is not merely something inherited; it is something actively celebrated, passed on, and cherished.

We honor Mr. Jefferson Sales not merely for the words he has put together, but for the courage to create something meaningful, the wisdom to look to their roots for inspiration, and the generosity to share that beauty with the world.

The Filipino Brand of Service Excellence (FBSE) Training was successfully conducted on January 30, 2026, at Davidson Hotel, Tabuk City, Kalinga. The activity aimed to strengthen service values and elevate the quality of service in the tourism and hospitality sector by anchoring excellence on Filipino culture and values. The program formally opened with opening remarks from Gretchen D. Bangguiyac, Dean of the College of Entrepreneurship, Tourism, and Hospitality Management (CETHM), followed by a welcome message from Dir. Jovita A. Ganongan, Regional Director of the Department of Tourismโ€“CAR. The training was facilitated by Jonathan A. Barroga, FBSE Regional Trainer, who also served as the Master of Ceremony.

The first part of the training focused on Filipino Values and Service Excellence, discussing the rationale of the Filipino Brand of Service Excellence and the importance of service excellence in the tourism industry. Emphasis was given to how service excellence is applied across the six tourism sectors, highlighting that quality service is a shared responsibility among tourism stakeholders. This session helped participants understand that Filipino hospitality, when guided by discipline and professionalism, becomes a strong competitive advantage.

Another key component was Service Excellence and Social Media, where participants explored the service promise, the 7Ms of Branded Filipino Service, and the importance of having the right values and right attitude in delivering excellent service. A group activity called โ€œpicture perfectโ€ was conducted, where participants creatively expressed their interpretation of service excellence through poses and still images, reinforcing learning through collaboration and visual expression.

The session on Understanding the Guests tackled knowing customer profiles and effectively addressing the millennial market. This was followed by Delivering Great Service Excellence, which introduced the G.U.E.S.T. approachโ€”Greet and engage guests, Understand their needs, Educate and offer assistance, Satisfy their needs, and Thank the customer. A role-playing activity allowed participants to demonstrate proper service delivery based on real-life hospitality scenarios.

The training concluded with Service Recovery, focusing on understanding guest concerns and proper handling of complaints to restore trust and satisfaction. The activity ended with an awarding segment, recognizing participation and engagement throughout the training. Overall, the FBSE Training equipped participants with practical skills, strengthened Filipino service values, and reinforced the importance of consistent, value-driven service excellence in the tourism industry.

CETHM Holds Seminar-Workshop on Gender Fair Language and Effective Voice Communication

The College of Entrepreneurship, Tourism, and Hospitality Management (CETHM) of Kalinga State University conducted a seminar-workshop titled โ€œGender Fair Language Communication: The Role of Voice in Communication and Gender-Fair Language Conceptsโ€ on November 17, 2025, at the KSU-HRM Building. The activity brought together CETHM student leaders and faculty members with the goal of strengthening their communication skills, promoting gender sensitivity, and enhancing their leadership roles within the college.

The program was led by project proponents Brisel D. Wacdagan, Eldie D. Malodrigo, and Mauricio G. Francisco Jr., the CETHM-SBO Governor. It was implemented by KSU-CETHM in partnership with the Office of the Guidance Counselor and the Gender and Development (GAD) Office, with funding support from Kalinga State Universityโ€“GAD.

To enhance engagement and practical learning, the program incorporated a variety of activities including lectures, interactive discussions, games, video presentations, and a hands-on workshop. These activities allowed participants to apply gender-fair communication strategies in realistic campus scenarios, strengthening their confidence in advocating inclusive language practices.

Among the highlights of the event were Gender Fair Language Games facilitated by Sonia T. Belinan, an overview of gender fair communication concepts led by Dr. Rexon H. Gaston, and an in-depth discussion on sexism in language delivered by Dr. Ethel Joy G. Wacas and Sir Jerwin Castillo, who also facilitated the workshop and final session on guidelines for non-sexist language. Faculty members provided support throughout the day by assisting with introductions, activity monitoring, and program evaluation.

The one-day seminar-workshop, held from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, concluded with participants gaining broader awareness of gender-fair language and improved skills in using voic@e effectively to communicate with respect and professionalism. The event reinforced CETHMians commitment to promoting gender equality and fostering a safe, inclusive environment for all students and faculty.
