"The path isn't a straight line, it’s a spiral. You continually come back to things you thought you understood and see deeper truths." ~ Barry H Gillespie
This quote by Barry H Gillespie is a reminder that learning and growth are not linear processes.
The word "path" means a way or course of action. The word "straight line" means a line that goes from one point to another without curving. The word "spiral" means a curve that winds around a central point, getting smaller and smaller as it goes. The word "continually" means happening repeatedly or regularly. The word "deeper" means more profound or meaningful. The word "truths" means facts or principles that are known to be true.
The quote suggests that our journey of learning and growth is not a simple one. We do not simply move from point A to point B. Instead, we go back and forth, revisiting things that we thought we understood and seeing them in a new light.
This can be frustrating at times, but it is also essential for our growth. When we revisit something that we thought we understood, we may see new patterns or connections that we had not seen before. We may also see how our understanding of that thing has changed over time.
This process of going back and forth is what allows us to grow and develop. It allows us to see the world in a more complex and nuanced way. It also allows us to see the deeper truths that lie beneath the surface.
If we want to continue to learn and grow, we need to be willing to embrace this spiral path. We need to be willing to let go of our attachment to our old understandings and to be open to new possibilities.
