A Catholic bishop holds up a human skull in a public religious ceremony. It is treated as sacred. The faithful gather. The Church calls it the veneration of relics.
When African communities keep, honour, or ritually engage with the remains of their ancestors, the same institutional Christianity has spent centuries calling it idolatry, paganism, and darkness.
The physical act is not different. A human skull is a human skull. The difference is who holds the power to define the categories.
One practice is protected by centuries of European institutional authority and declared holy. The other was condemned, suppressed, and used as justification for colonial missionary work.
This is not a theological debate. It is a question of who gets to decide what is sacred and what is superstition.
