MOUNTAINS OF OPPORTUNITY
And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Jesus Christ. Philippians 4:19.
As l write this, we are presently in the midst of a deepening recession. Employees are losing their jobs here in the US, home values are plummeting, mortgage are being foreclosed, businesses are collapsing, and a number of firms have folded up. Consequently, the army of the unemployed is getting bigger and bigger every passing day.
The picture of the economic situation which the media has been painting in somber colors for some time now is getting darker and darker. The voices which proclaim doom and gloom are louder now than ever before. These are indeed the days which try men's souls. And during these days of stress and strain, the hills which represent our problems have now assumed the proportions of high mountains.
But you will perhaps agree with me when I say that there is a beauty peculiar to mountain sceneries. Look around our country, for instance the Cordillera Central, Sierra Madre, Caraballo, the Zambales Ranges, Tagaytay Ridge, Arayat, Apo, Mayon, Kanlaon, Banahaw. Without these mountains, the view of the plains would be very monotonous, to say the least.
Most mountains mentioned in the Bible are places of high watermarks in Bible history. Noah's ark rested on Mount Ararat after the Flood (Gen. 8:4). God proclaimed His Decalogue on Mount Sinai (Exo. 19:2, 3). Elijah had a showdown with Baal's prophets on Mount Carmel (1 Kings 18:19). Jesus delineated the signs of the end on the Mount of Olives (Matthew 24). The Son of God was crucified on Mount Calvary (Luke 23:33). And the redeemed will be standing on Mount Zion (Rev. 14:1-5).
True, crises took place on these mountains, but they resulted in great victories for the people of God! Need we fear, then, the mountains of economic difficulties which we are facing today? The important thing is not how big the mountain is, but how big is our faith on the God who conquers mountains. With God nothing is impossible!
