Is this bike considered as a Eroica bike? Brake cable routing is internal.
An "Eroica bike" is a vintage or vintage-inspired road bicycle built according to the specific technical regulations of the non-competitive L'Eroica cycling event. The original event, founded in Italy in 1997, celebrates the "heroic" era of cycling and bans modern technology like carbon fiber and electronic shifting.
Key requirements for an Eroica bike
To be an authentic Eroica bike, the bicycle must have the following features and components, typically pre-dating 1987:
Frame: Must be made of steel. In some events, a few early aluminum frames with glued or screwed joints (such as those made by Alan or Vitus) are also permitted.
Gear Shifters: Must be located on the down tube of the frame. The only exceptions are non-indexed bar-end shifters made before 1980.
Brake Cables: Must be routed externally and pass over the handlebars, not hidden inside them.
Pedals: Must be classic pedals with toe clips and straps. Clipless pedals are prohibited.
Wheels: Must have at least 32 spokes. The rims must have a low profile (20mm or less) and be made of steel, aluminum, or wood.
Saddle: Should be era-appropriate, though modern saddles with a vintage look are sometimes allowed.
Eroica bike variations
Vintage Steel: An authentic Eroica bike is a road-racing bicycle that was built in 1987 or earlier and features the original-era components.
Vintage-Inspired: New or recently built steel road bikes can also be considered "Eroica approved" if they are assembled with vintage components that meet all the regulations.
Nova Eroica: Some modern offshoot events, like Nova Eroica, are less restrictive and permit newer bicycles, including gravel bikes with disc brakes and modern materials. However, these bikes are not accepted at the traditional L'Eroica event.
