NEWS UPDATE: 𝗨𝗥𝗗𝗖 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱'𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀

The University Research and Development Center (URDC) Director Dr. Ryan Michael Oducado was recognized among the World’s Top 2% scientists for the fourth consecutive year, October 7.

First included in the global ranking in 2023, Oducado placed 1,444 out of 73,697 evaluated researchers worldwide under public health and health services with a subfield specialization in nursing.

As an assistant professor at the University’s College of Nursing, Oducado's research is primarily centered on nursing education, teaching and learning methodologies, public health, and student mental health.

Oducado pledged to “expand institutional support and student mentorship" to promote the University's research capacity.

“I want to encourage [Taga-West students] to go beyond simply completing research as an academic requirement, and inspire them to present, publish, and make meaningful contributions through their work,” Oducado said in an interview with Forum-Dimensions.

Published by Stanford University, the scientist list uses standardized bibliometric data to identify top-performing scholars worldwide.

It calculates an automated composite score based on citation counts, authorship roles and discipline-specific research impact.

The ranking draws on the citation database of Scopus, which tracks peer-reviewed scientific literature and journal publications worldwide.

𝘚𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘺 𝘍𝘰𝘤𝘶𝘴

This study examined the relationship between socioeconomic status, ICT literacy skills, access, and the use of web-based information resources among Higher National Diploma students in public polytechnics in Southwestern Nigeria.

𝘒𝘦𝘺 𝘍𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴

The study involved 1,387 Higher National Diploma students from six public polytechnics, with a 94.9% response rate.

Socioeconomic status showed a significant positive relationship with the use of web-based information resources (r = 0.59).

ICT literacy skills showed a significant positive relationship with resource use (r = 0.31).

Accessibility to web-based information resources showed a significant positive relationship with resource use (r = 0.64).

Socioeconomic status, ICT literacy skills, and accessibility together explained 54.5% of the variance in web-based information resource use.

𝘐𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵

The findings highlight the importance of ICT skills, socioeconomic conditions, and access to digital resources in supporting students' academic work. Polytechnic management should strengthen ICT infrastructure and improve student access to web-based information resources through institutional e-libraries.

𝑆𝑡𝑢𝑑𝑦 𝐹𝑜𝑐𝑢𝑠
This study assessed tree diversity, canopy structure, and tree proximity to campus infrastructure through a complete field inventory and GIS-based mapping at the West Visayas State University Main Campus.

𝐾𝑒𝑦 𝐹𝑖𝑛𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑠
The inventory recorded 317 trees representing 34 species, including one unresolved taxon.
Simpson's Index of Diversity reached 0.866, although one species accounted for 30.3% of all recorded trees.
Tree canopies covered about 20,300 square meters, or 20.66% of the 9.83-hectare campus.
More than half of the recorded trees, 50.56%, stood less than one meter from roads, indicating potential infrastructure management concerns.

𝐼𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡
The study provides baseline data for campus tree management, species diversification, GIS-based monitoring, and future assessments of tree health and campus microclimate. The findings support evidence-based planning for safer, healthier, and more sustainable university landscapes.

𝑆𝑡𝑢𝑑𝑦 𝐹𝑜𝑐𝑢𝑠
This study examined how personal technological factors influenced the academic performance of Grade 9 science learners at a resource-limited high school following the withdrawal of school-issued tablets. The findings support future improvements in the Department of Education's Digital Rise Program.

𝐾𝑒𝑦 𝐹𝑖𝑛𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑠
Greater access to personal technology was positively associated with science academic performance.
Technology literacy, learner motivation and engagement, curriculum and pedagogy, socioeconomic status, and gender and cultural factors were significantly related to academic performance.
Teacher training and support received high ratings from learners, though no significant relationship appeared with academic performance.
Limited access to electricity, internet connection, and personal devices reduced the impact of teacher support on learning outcomes.

𝐼𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡
The study highlights the value of equitable access to technology in improving science learning. Better access to digital resources, stronger technology literacy, and improved learning support contribute to stronger academic performance among learners in resource-limited schools.

𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐄𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐍𝐎𝐖 | The University Research Development Center conducts the 10th Summer Research Capability Building Program from June 22 to 26, 2026.

Opening remarks were delivered by Dr. Greta G. Gabinete, Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension. She welcomed participants and highlighted research work and collaboration across the University.

The program gathers participants from West Visayas State University campuses, including Pototan Campus, Himamaylan Campus, Lambunao Campus, Calinog Campus, Janiuay Campus, and the College of Agriculture and Forestry.

Dr. Aris C. Larroder, Editor-in-Chief of the WVSU Research Journal, serves as one of the resource speakers, panelists, and mentors in the program. His sessions focus on research skills, scholarly writing, and academic engagement among participants.

Kirt Andrei Amar, intern of the University Research Publication Unit and the WVSU Research Journal, together with Ma. Karyle Calubayan, intern of the University Research Development Center, serve as masters of ceremony during the program.

𝑆𝑡𝑢𝑑𝑦 𝐹𝑜𝑐𝑢𝑠
This study examined how computer access for schoolwork relates to the ability of pre service teachers to compute grades and perform statistical calculations using Microsoft Excel.

𝐾𝑒𝑦 𝐹𝑖𝑛𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑠
Most pre-service teachers reported shared or limited computer access for school-related tasks.
Participants with personal computer access completed more correct Excel calculations per minute.
Limited access affected performance in grade computation and spreadsheet-based assessment tasks.
Findings showed unequal technology access influences digital competency development among future teachers.

The study highlights the importance of equitable computer access in teacher education. Strong digital skills support accurate grading, efficient assessment practices, and fair classroom evaluation.
