Fallen Heroes of the Road
This day marks a somber moment for the people of Benguet. A team of road maintenance crew members from the Provincial Government of Benguet was on their way to respond to a landslide clearing operation in Bineng, La Trinidad—an all-too-familiar call of duty in these mountainous lands.
Tragically, the loader they were riding plunged into a ravine before they could even begin their mission. Two of the crew were rushed to the hospital, while two others—brave and selfless men—lost their lives in the line of duty.
They were not soldiers. Not police. Not in the headlines. But they were heroes.
These were among the unsung champions of our highland roads. Quietly responding every time a mountain crumbles onto the highway. Working through weekends, under heavy rain, in the cold, and often without compensation beyond their modest salaries. They kept our roads open. They clear paths not just for traffic, but for vegetable trucks bound for markets, students trying to get to school, workers on their daily commute, emergency vehicles, and families simply trying to make it home..
They did it not for recognition, but for service. For us.
To the two injured crew members—get well soon. We are praying for your swift recovery. Your bravery, too, does not go unnoticed.
To those who fell today: may you rest in peace. Your sacrifice will not be forgotten. You gave your life so others may travel safely. You are no longer just road workers—you are woven into the very mountains you served.
Thank you for your service. Your courage and dedication light the way for all who follow.
