While helping our father fix something in our motorcycle after church, I was reminded that recently, tragic accidents have become a regular feature in the news. Tragic accidents not only in the Philippines, but accross the globe, claiming the lives of many innocent people. Regardless of age or gender—be it the elderly, children, or even infants—no one is exempt.
As we grieve and mourn in our own ways for them, may these moments also serve as a sobering reminder that life is full of uncertainties, and none of us know when our time will come. Not even those who have devoted their lives to God—those who embody unwavering faith and are seen as the epitome of true believers—are spared from the certainty of death.
We are often driven to focus on achieving our personal ambitions and fulfilling our dreams. Looking back, after completing my education, due to the different circumstances amd personal reason, I immediately redirect my full attention to the things that I want to achieve. Yet, In my pursuit of success and worldly accomplishments, it seems that I am slowly drifting away from my faith. I am afraid that I may lose sight of my relationship with God gradually if this continues.
This morning’s Sunday sermon stirred something within me. According to our pastor, one of our fellow member were accidentally struck by a car. This resulted in multiple injuries that she needed to undergo some operations. This reminded me that no matter how powerful our titles, how vast our possessions, or how much land we own—even if we held half of the Philippines—none of it matters when God decides our time is up. We are all equal in the face of mortality.
And so, as we strive to be more cautious and disciplined in our daily travels and driving, may we also be reminded once again of this powerful verse:
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
— Matthew 6:19–21 (NIV)
