After weeks of inclement weather and multiple class suspensions, the Development Communication Society (DCS) General Assembly has finally commenced.

The gathering brings together Development Communication students for important organizational updates and discussions on the society’s plans and activities for the academic year. Despite delays brought by unfavorable weather conditions, students and officers have come together to strengthen engagement and prepare for the semester ahead.

With all College of Information Sciences (CIS) Recognized Student Organizations (RSOs) now having held their respective general assemblies, the semester is officially underway!

The College of Information Sciences Student Government (CIS-SG) is opening the collection of donations today, August 10, in an effort to extend support to communities affected by the recent challenges.

They are accepting donations of food, hygiene essentials, clothing, and other basic necessities. Every contribution, big or small, can help provide comfort and relief to those who need it most.

🚚 Target Delivery: Wednesday, August 12

Let’s come together and turn what we can give into something that can make someone’s day a little lighter. 🩷

Your donation may be small to you, but it could mean everything to someone else.

The College of Information Sciences Community, is organizing a donation drive for families and individuals who have evacuated their homes in Guisad–Surong and are currently seeking safety in evacuation centers.

As of today, 14 families, comprising a total of 62 individuals, including young children aged 3–7 years old, are currently staying at Baguio International Academy. With 7 other evacuees staying at the Guisad–Surong Barangay Hall

At this time, they are in urgent need of basic necessities, particularly:

Hygiene supplies
• Soap and shampoo
• Toothbrushes and toothpaste
• Tissue and wet wipes
• Napkins / Pantyliners
• Other personal hygiene essentials

Food and Drinks
• Ready-to-eat food
• Pantry and food supplies
• Bottled water
• Milk
• Coffee
• Other non-perishable food items

Clothing
• Clean, dry, and warm clothes
• Blankets
• Jackets
• Other warm clothing and sleeping essentials

The College of Information Sciences Student Government (CIS-SG) conducted its Team Building Activity at Unplug Events Experience, Baguio City, on August 1, 2026, to strengthen teamwork and leadership among its officers through collaborative challenges and engaging activities.

𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐫: This video is intended solely for documentation, information, and entertainment purposes, showcasing the highlights of the team-building activity. All activities were conducted with proper safety measures and appropriate supervision. No participants were harmed during the making of this video. The College of Information Sciences (CIS) welcomed its incoming freshmen during its General Assembly and Freshmen Orientation held on July 22, 2026, at the university gymnasium.

The event brought together freshmen, continuing students, faculty members, college officials, and student leaders for a day of learning and community building.

The freshmen were officially welcomed through the welcome remarks before the introduction of the college officials, administrative staff, department chairs, and other key personnel. The department chairs also presented the college's academic programs—Bachelor of Library and Information Science (BLIS), Bachelor of Science in Development Communication (BSDC), and Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT).

Then, Dr. Elizabeth A. Lascano, Dean of the College, delivered a keynote message encouraging students to pursue academic excellence and actively participate in college activities. Bernice B. Bulalin, College Secretary, discussed the college's Vision and Mission as well as the academic policies and expectations to guide students throughout their academic journey.

The second part of the program focused on the Gender and Development (GAD) Orientation, led by Dr. Lascano. She highlighted gender equality and equity, as well as gender and s*x roles. She also emphasized respect within the university community. She concluded with the statement, "Be the change of what you like to be. Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress, working together is success."

This was followed by the Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability Orientation conducted by the Pollution Control Officer, Kevin P. Titiwa, which emphasized environmental responsibility and sustainable practices on campus. "Sustainability doesn't need heroic effort. It gets easier when good choices become habits. Think about how a habit starts. First, something reminds you to do it—like seeing a flat piece of plastic on the ground or in the street. Then, you take action: you pick up the plastic and put it in a trash can. Finally, you get a small reward, a feeling of satisfaction or accomplishment. And because you've done it so many times, it's just what you do. You have built a habit," he emphasized.

The final part of the event featured the CIS Student Government General Assembly. Outgoing Recognized Student Organization (RSO) officers and advisers were recognized for their service and accomplishments through the awarding of certificates. Newly appointed advisers and incoming student government officers were then introduced and officially installed through a turnover ceremony and oath-taking. The recognized student organizations—Body of Young Technologists (BYTE), Development Communication Society (DCS), Library Information Science Association (LISA), and The Hyperlink—were also introduced to encourage freshmen to actively participate in campus organizations.

Additionally, the CIS Student Government presented its Constitution and By-Laws, followed by the discussion of proposed amendments and ratification. Students were also oriented on membership contributions, including the membership fee, its purpose, transparency measures, accountability, informed consent, and the collection process. The student government's action plan and upcoming activities were then presented. An open forum allowed students to ask questions and clarify concerns before the event concluded with closing remarks from the CIS Student Government Co-Adviser and a closing prayer.

As the new academic year begins, the orientation reaffirmed the college's commitment to empowering students with the knowledge, guidance, values, and opportunities they need to thrive both academically and personally.

Rise and shine!

Good morning, CIS Family!

The long vacation has officially come to an end, and if you're already missing your bed, you're definitely not alone.

Today marks the start of another school year filled with new lessons to learn, new people to meet, new experiences to embrace, and, of course, new reasons to wonder why classes have to start so early.

Day 1 is finally here. The alarms are back, the morning rush has returned, coffee is once again a trusted companion, and "I'll sleep early tonight" has already become the first promise we're probably going to break this semester.

As we walk into our classrooms once again, may we carry more than just our IDs and school supplies. May we also bring our dreams, determination, curiosity, and the courage to keep showing up, even when things get challenging.

So take a deep breath, wear your brightest smile, greet a friend, make a new one, and take that first step into a brand-new chapter.

Welcome back, CIS! Here's to a year of growth, resilience, laughter, learning, and moments that make all the hard work worthwhile. Let's make this school year one to remember.

Today, we honor your accomplishments and the purpose that brought you here. Time and again, you have chosen to listen closely, ask difficult questions, uncover meaningful stories, and create work that inspires and leaves a lasting impact.

You are chroniclers of events. More than that, you are keepers of memories. While moments may come and go, you preserve them through stories that educate and endure long after the headlines have faded. Through every article written, every photograph captured, every publication material designed, and every story shared, you have shown that journalism is rooted in truth and guided by integrity.

Like ink pressed into the grain of a page, your work leaves an imprint that time cannot easily erase.

𝐈𝐍 𝐂𝐀𝐒𝐄 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐌𝐈𝐒𝐒𝐄𝐃 𝐈𝐓 | 𝐁𝐋𝐈𝐒 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐊𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐚 𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 “𝐑𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐡𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐦”

Third-year Bachelor of Library and Information Science (BLIS) students of Benguet State University showcased the rich culture and traditions of the Kalinga community through a cultural performance held on April 27 at the College of Information Sciences (CIS) parking lot.

Carrying the theme “Roots and Rhythm: Showcasing Kalinga’s Culture,” the activity served as part of the students’ requirement for their SpT 107 Indigenous Knowledge and Multicultural Studies (IKMS) course.

The event featured performances inspired by Kalinga traditions such as Bodong Matagoan, Maguinam Un Ili Mi, Dangdang-Ay, and En-ennop Di Itanduan. Through songs, dances, chants, attire, and cultural practices, the students highlighted the identity and values of the Kalinga people.

Dr. Russell B. Dolendo, subject professor, explained that the word “rhythm” represents the heart of the culture through its songs, chants, dances, attire, beliefs, language, and policies. She also shared that Kalinga values are deeply rooted in Bain (respect and shame), Ngilin (taboos), and Paniyaw (fear of divine punishment), which guide the community in maintaining harmony and moral balance.

Guest speaker Atty. Bryan Christopher C. Donggayao from the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) Baguio emphasized the importance of values in preserving culture and traditions. He stated, “No awan ti values, haan tayo siguro nakatakder tadta,” which means, “If there are no values, we probably would not be standing here.” He also discussed the four foundations of the Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Act (IPRA), namely the right to ancestral domains and lands, the right to self-governance and empowerment, the right to social justice and human rights, and the right to cultural integrity.

Reflecting on the activity, Jaden Mendoza, a third-year BLIS student and performer, shared that one of her biggest takeaways from the program was the importance of values, a message strongly emphasized by the guest speaker.

Through “Roots and Rhythm,” the third-year BLIS students showed that librarianship goes beyond managing books and information. The activity reminded the students that future librarians also serve as keepers of stories, culture, traditions, and identity. By immersing themselves in the traditions of the Kalinga community, the students gained a deeper appreciation of indigenous knowledge and the importance of preserving and passing it on to future generations. More than just a course requirement, the program became a meaningful experience that strengthened their understanding of serving both information and the communities behind it.
