Spearheaded by the College Dean Dr. Maureen P. De Vera, the initiative aims to provide a free and quality animal reproductive health service to the community, while educating pet owners on their importance. It underscores the collegeโs dedication to promoting responsible pet ownership through accessible veterinary care and public awareness.
Hesitance among pet owners remains one of the greatest challenges to spaying and neutering, overshadowing the advantages these procedures offer to both pets and the community. Dr. Beverly B. Tagactac, a faculty of the college, shared: โThis lessens the unwanted and uncontrolled booming of the population of stray dogs and cats. The risk of spreading diseases is also lessened. Certain diseases can also be avoided like pyometra.โ - Dr. Tagactac emphasized.
For pet owners like Alex, this kind of event was a welcome and necessary service. When asked what motivated him to bring his pet, Alex highlighted the combination of accessibility and necessity: "Because it's expensive when it's outside, so we grab the opportunity. At the same time, the dog needs to be neutered."- Alex shared.
Exclusive to everyone, the collegeโs very own students took the opportunity to have their beloved pets spayed and neutered. Marina Obispo., a cat owner shared: โNong nakita ko โyung post โbout sa spay and neuter ng college, go na ako. Pinakapon ko yung pusa ko para naman makatulong sa pag-iwas ng kanilang unwanted na pagdami sa community namin tsaka para hindi na sโya lumabas ng bahayโdelikado din kasi.โ-Obispo expressed.
Behind the successful event of the college are the dedicated clinicians who played an instrumental role in the initiative. Their efforts were strengthened by the transformational guidance and support from the veterinarians of the City Veterinary and Agricultural Office (CVAO). For Agnes Dodon., a clinician, the mission is deeply connected to their role as veterinarians. "The main goal of Spay and Neuter is to help or contribute as a Vet Med student," Agnes Dodon. explained. "This is our contribution as a veterinarian to give free Spay and Neuter to the community."
Another clinician, Frolian Javier., echoed this sentiment, emphasizing their duty to the community. "As veterinarians and as Filipino citizens, we are obliged... to help our community in small ways such as spay and neuter and vaccination drives."
Spirits were uplifted and replenished with claps and smiles as the event met its triumphant end. The sense of fulfillment was evident among the participants alike, as each successful procedure symbolized not only care for individual animals but also compassion for the community as a whole. The event was not merely a battleground of skills; it also served as a valuable learning ground for future veterinarians and clinicians, allowing them to gain meaningful experiences and exchange insights with their seniors in the field. As Dr. Richard P. Dumapis addressed in his closing remarks: โ...they do not intend to become teachers but in your line of work you will always be teaching somebody else. Because as you go along in your career path, you become seniors. And as a senior, itโs your job to teach each other that is following after you, so that you become a better version of yourself.โ- Dr. Dumapis explained.
The free spay and neuter was more than just a medical procedure day; it was a testament to the university's commitment to serving the community and educating the next generation of veterinarians. By providing these essential services, the initiative not only helped individual pets but also took a proactive step in managing the pet population humanely. For furparents and organizers alike, the event was a resounding success, paving the way for a healthier, more responsible pet community.
